Airedale grooming
Airedale Terrier grooming in Gloucester, MA
The Airedale is the largest of the terriers, a dog the AKC credits with jobs from ratting and duck hunting to messenger work in the First World War. Its hard wire coat needs less upkeep than it looks. This page explains what that coat wants, the strip-or-clip decision, and why the AKC's grooming calendar for the breed is shorter than many owners expect.
Hard wire
An Airedale wears a hard, dense wire coat over a short, soft undercoat, finished with a beard and leg furnishings
The breed standard asks for a coat that is hard, dense and wiry, lying straight and close and covering the body and legs, and notes that some of the hardest coats crinkle or are slightly waved. At the base of that stiff hair sits a shorter growth of softer hair, the undercoat. The colors follow a fixed plan: a tan head, ears, legs and underside, and a black or dark grizzle saddle. A soft coat is among the faults the standard says should be severely penalized.
The AKC describes a long head with a sporty beard and mustache, males about 23 inches at the shoulder and a weight of 50 to 70 pounds. That is a lot of terrier to trim. The furnishings, the longer hair kept on the legs, the beard and under the chest, are what gather mud and burrs, and the beard soaks up whatever was in the water bowl or the tide pool.
- Jacket: hard, dense, wiry and lying close
- Undercoat: short and soft, at the base of the wire
- Beard and mustache: the longest hair on the head
- Legs: covered well in hard hair, kept fuller than the body
The outline
The full service trims the classic Airedale outline; whether the coat can be stripped is confirmed at check-in
The King of Terriers outline is a short, flat jacket on the back and sides, a clean neck, a long head finished with a squared beard, and straight, fuller legs. Our full service is a bath plus a breed-specific or custom haircut, so that outline, or a shorter version of it, is what you book. Ask for a smaller beard if your dog dunks it in every bowl, or slimmer legs through mud season.
The AKC names both ways to finish an Airedale: a full grooming means a bath, a brush, and then a strip or a clip. Stripping pulls the dead wire out so new hard coat can grow, and the AKC's wire-coat guide calls it time-consuming and says clipping is just fine on sensitive areas such as the face and underbelly. Clipping the whole dog is faster and neat, though a clipped wire coat tends to soften over the years. Hand stripping is not on our published menu; mention it when you book and the groomer confirms at check-in whether it can be done.
- Clipped outline: quicker, neat and easy to repeat
- Stripped coat: a harder texture, more time on the table
- Face and belly: clipped either way, per the AKC's wire-coat guide
- Stripping requests: confirmed by the groomer at check-in
Three or four a year
The AKC suggests a full groom three or four times a year, with weekly brushing to carry the coat between
The Airedale's schedule surprises owners of smaller terriers. The AKC says a full grooming, with a bath, a brush and a strip or clip, should be done three or four times a year by the owner or a professional, and that the short wire coat otherwise needs relatively little maintenance. Weekly brushing does the rest, keeping the coat looking good and taking out dead hair that would otherwise land around the house. If you like a crisper outline, book more often; that is a style choice, not a need of the coat.
Skipping the weekly brush is what costs money. The AKC advises breaking up any mat found during the weekly session with your fingers and then teasing it apart with a comb. Left for a season, the leg furnishings, the beard and the armpits can knot, and dematting is $15 per 20 minutes on top of the full service, assessed at check-in. A bath between full grooms, $65 or $75 by weight, handles a salty or muddy coat without a haircut.

What you pay
Most Airedales pay $110 for full service and $75 for a bath, set by weight
Grooming is priced by weight, and the AKC's 50 to 70 pounds puts most Airedales in our band for 51 to 90 pounds: $110 for the full service and $75 for a bath. A smaller female at 50 pounds or under is in the 26 to 50 band, at $85 and $65. Weigh your dog before booking; the groomer confirms the band and the final price at check-in after a coat assessment.
The add-ons that suit the breed are practical ones. The AKC tells owners to check an Airedale's ears regularly for foreign matter and wax and to brush the teeth regularly; teeth brushing at the groom is $10, and nail clipping is $16. A $10 face trim tidies the beard between full grooms. Unlimited daycare members take 15 percent off grooming, and rebooking at pick-up takes $5 off the next visit.

Between grooms
At home, brush weekly, wash the beard when it smells, and look inside the ears
A slicker or pin brush over the jacket and a metal comb through the beard and legs, once a week, is the routine for most of the year. Wash and dry the beard when it smells of dinner or low tide. The AKC's ear advice matters on a dog that pushes its head into every hedge: look inside the folded ears for seeds, sand and wax, and take anything red or smelly to your vet.
Cape Ann gives an Airedale plenty to push into. From April to November the leg hair and beard collect ticks on Dogtown Common and in Ravenswood, so make the weekly brush a tick check. In the off season The Trustees open Crane Beach in Ipswich to dogs from October 1 to March 31, free for member dogs and $5 for a nonmember dog, at the time of writing; after a run there, comb the sand out of the legs and beard once they are dry.
- Weekly brush and comb, beard and legs included
- Beard washed and dried when it smells
- Ears checked for sand, seeds and wax
- Leg furnishings checked for ticks, April to November
