Great Dane care on Cape Ann
The AKC calls the Great Dane the Apollo of Dogs and warns that a dog of such size, weight and strength is a commitment not to be entered into lightly. Males stand 30 to 32 inches and weigh 140 to 175 pounds. This guide covers what that size changes at daycare, in an overnight stay and on a Cape Ann walk.
Growing joints
Joint-aware play: a Dane puppy grows fast, so the hard running waits
Great Danes grow quickly, and the AKC says they can have a lot of growing pains. Its advice is daily exercise suited to the dog's age, two or three brisk walks a day for an adult, and no jogging or long hikes until the dog is two years old, to avoid damage to growing joints. The AKC also describes panosteitis, an inflammation of the growing long bones that shows as a limp that can move from leg to leg; that is your vet's diagnosis to make.
In a playgroup that means choosing the game, not just the group. A young Dane goes with large, steady dogs that wrestle slowly rather than sprint and pile on, and our playgroups of 7 to 10 are matched by size and temperament at the free evaluation. A supervised session on the dogPACER treadmill, a $10 enrichment add-on, gives steady, low-impact walking. At home, keep the leaps off furniture and out of the car to a minimum, and keep the dog lean; the AKC warns that a heavy Dane has a shorter life span.
- No jogging or long hikes before two years old, per the AKC
- Large, steady playmates who wrestle slowly
- A limp that moves from leg to leg: your vet
- A lean dog, because extra weight is hard on big joints
Bloat-aware rest
Bloat-aware rest: plan the meals around the play, not the play around the meals
The AKC calls bloat, or gastric dilatation-volvulus, the number-one killer of Great Danes. VCA describes it as a life-threatening emergency, most common in large, deep-chested dogs, in which the stomach fills with gas and can twist. VCA lists exercise after a large meal or a big drink, and feeding only one meal a day, among the risk factors, and names surgical gastropexy as the most effective prevention. The AKC notes that many breeders and owners consider a preventive gastropexy; it is a conversation to have with your vet.
The signs VCA gives are a dog that seems distressed or restless, retches without producing anything and has a swollen belly. That dog needs a vet immediately; Massachusetts Veterinary Referral Hospital in Woburn is open around the clock. For a daycare day, the practical step is timing. Feed breakfast early enough that your Dane is not playing hard on a full stomach after the 6:30 to 9:30 AM drop-off, and ask your vet how long a gap suits your dog.
- 01
Split the day's food into two or more meals, as the AKC suggests
- 02
Feed breakfast early enough to leave a quiet gap before drop-off
- 03
Keep water available, but avoid a huge drink right before hard play
- 04
After meals at home, a calm hour rather than a game of fetch
- 05
Know the signs: restlessness, retching with nothing coming up, a swollen belly
- 06
Ask your vet whether a preventive gastropexy makes sense
Heat and cold
Heat and cold: a giant body in July, a short coat in January
July and August are the hard months for any big dog working hard. VCA calls heat stroke an immediate emergency and counts excited or heavily exercised dogs among those at risk; its first aid is cool, not cold, water over the head, belly, armpits and feet, no ice packs and no wet towels draped over the dog, and then the vet. Gloucester's beaches are closed to dogs through the summer anyway, so a Dane's July walk belongs early in the morning or in the evening, on grass.
Winter turns it around. The AKC describes a short, smooth coat that sheds little for most of the year, and there is not much of it between a Dane and a north wind off the harbor. The AVMA's cold-weather guidance notes that short-haired dogs feel the cold faster and suggests a coat for dogs that need one; a fitted jacket cut for a deep chest makes a February walk to Stage Fort Park more pleasant. Rinse road salt off the feet afterward.
- July walks before the heat builds, on grass, with water
- Cool, not cold, water and a fast call to the vet if a Dane overheats
- A fitted jacket for windy walks below freezing
- Salt rinsed off the feet after winter sidewalks
The overnight stay
Suite size and the overnight stay: what to ask before your Dane sleeps over
An overnight stay at Dogtown is $78 a night. Guests join the daycare playgroups by day and sleep in a suite at night with 24/7 monitoring, after the same free evaluation as daycare. We do not publish suite dimensions, so ask us at the evaluation and we will confirm how a dog of your Dane's size is set up. The Dogtown Deluxe bundle, $15 more a night, adds an upgraded orthopedic memory-foam bed, a daily treadmill or enrichment session and 15 percent off grooming.
Pack the food pre-portioned, as we prefer for every overnight guest, and tell the front desk the meal schedule your vet recommends so the bloat plan travels with the dog. Sunday drop-off and pick-up for overnight stays run 8 to 10 AM and 4 to 6 PM. The Pup Van serves Rockport, Gloucester, Essex and Manchester-by-the-Sea at $10 each way; before you book it, ask whether the van suits a dog this tall.
| For a Great Dane | Price |
|---|---|
| Overnight suite, per night | $78 |
| Dogtown Deluxe bundle, per night | +$15 |
| Daycare, full day | $42 |
| Bath, over 90 lb | $85 |

Heart, coat and nails
The heart, the eyes and a coat that needs a bath, not a haircut
Beyond bloat, the AKC lists eye and cardiac disease, hypothyroidism and hip dysplasia among the breed's health issues, and recommends hip, cardiac, eye and thyroid screening for breeding dogs. VCA names the Great Dane among the large breeds in which dilated cardiomyopathy is the most common cause of heart failure, lists weakness, reduced stamina, coughing and collapse among the signs, and notes that regular checkups can find heart problems before signs appear. A Dane that tires early in a game it usually enjoys is worth a call to your vet.
Grooming is simple. The AKC suggests weekly brushing with a rubber mitt or hound glove, daily in a shedding season, and only an occasional bath. At Dogtown a Dane over 90 pounds is the $85 bath, Shed Release adds $10 when the coat is dropping, and nail clipping at $16 matters on a heavy dog. Grooming needs no evaluation and can be booked onto a daycare day; the full add-on list is on our dog grooming page.
