A Cape Ann summer is not brutally hot by the numbers, but it is wet: sea air, humid afternoons and pavement that holds the day's heat until dark. The season

Humidity, not the thermometer, is what wears a Cape Ann dog down in July

Dogs cool themselves mainly by panting, moving air over the wet surfaces of the tongue and mouth, and the AVMA's heat guidance notes that this works less well as humidity rises, because there is less evaporation. Cape Ann's summer is humid by nature: sea air that feels mild to a person on a July afternoon is harder on a dog than a drier, hotter day inland. Add the pavement of downtown Gloucester, Bearskin Neck and the Rockport line platform, which gives back heat after sunset, and the dog is flat at 7 PM.

The calendar takes away the one cool surface. At the time of writing Gloucester's public beaches are closed to dogs from May 1 to September 30 and Rockport's from June 1 to September 15, so the low-tide sand and the sea are off the table until fall. The season's bookends are the crowds: St. Peter's Fiesta in late June and the July 3 fireworks at one end, the Schooner Festival over Labor Day at the other.

Who struggles first

Flat-faced breeds, seniors, heavy coats and the dog that never stops

The AVMA lists the dogs at highest risk in heat: flat-faced breeds such as bulldogs, pugs, Boston terriers and French bulldogs, whose short airways make panting inefficient; older dogs, overweight dogs, dogs with heart or breathing conditions, and the very young. We would add two from the turf yard: the heavy-coated northern breeds, and the ball-obsessed retriever who does not know when to stop. That last dog needs you to end the game.

The signs the AVMA tells owners to act on are heavy panting, excessive drooling, weakness, stumbling, vomiting, diarrhea, a bright red tongue or gums, and collapse, and its advice is to get the dog to a vet immediately. This page offers no home treatment beyond moving the dog into shade or air conditioning and calling your vet on the way. Never leave a dog in a parked car in summer, for any length of time, windows open or not.

What it asks of your dog

A dawn walk, a shaded loop, water on every outing and a nap through the afternoon

The summer routine on Cape Ann is a walk before 8 AM while the pavement is still cool, a short shaded outing in the middle of the day if any, and the long walk after sunset once the stones have given up their heat. Shaded trails at Ravenswood Park and on Dogtown Common stay walkable through the day on soil and pine needles, with the trade of ticks. Carry water and a bowl on every outing, and use the hand test on the pavement.

Teach the dog to settle indoors through the afternoon. A frozen Kong, a lick mat, a cool floor and a closed curtain get most dogs through 1 to 5 PM without a walk. For the flat-faced breeds the afternoon rule is stricter: no exertion in humid heat, short leashed bathroom breaks, and air conditioning if you have it. How hot is too hot to walk a dog on Cape Ann?

There is no single number, because humidity matters as much as temperature: the AVMA notes that panting cools a dog less well in humid air, and Cape Ann's sea air is humid most summer days. Walk before 8 AM and after sunset, test the pavement with the back of your hand, and skip exertion for flat-faced breeds and seniors.

How do I know my dog is overheating?

The AVMA lists heavy panting, excessive drooling, weakness, stumbling, vomiting, diarrhea, bright red gums and collapse. Any of them means shade or air conditioning immediately and a vet on the way, not a wait; after hours, the Woburn emergency hospital is open around the clock. Flat-faced breeds go from panting to trouble fastest.

Can my French bulldog or pug go to daycare in summer?

Is it ever safe to leave my dog in the car for a quick stop in Rockport?

No. The AVMA's position is that a parked car heats to dangerous levels within minutes even with the windows open and even on a mild day, and Bearskin Neck in July is neither mild nor quick. Leave the dog at home, book a daycare day, or take it to a shaded patio.
