Cavapoo care on Cape Ann
The cavapoo is a cross between a Cavalier King Charles spaniel and a miniature or toy poodle, so it has no AKC breed page of its own, and the two parent breeds tell you most of what to expect. This guide covers the whole dog on this coast; our cockapoo and cavapoo grooming page covers the haircut in detail.
Two parents
A cavapoo is two companion breeds in one small dog, and the coat shows it first
The AKC lists the Cavalier at 12 to 13 inches and 13 to 18 pounds, the miniature poodle at 10 to 15 inches and 10 to 15 pounds, and the toy poodle at no more than 10 inches. A cavapoo lands somewhere in that range, which puts nearly every one in our smallest grooming band and in the small-dog playgroups. Neither parent is a working dog in the modern sense. Both were shaped to live close to people, and that thread runs through the rest of this page.
The coat blends the Cavalier's silky feathering with the poodle's dense curl. The AKC warns that a poodle coat not brushed and combed completely to the skin mats near the roots, and a soft blended coat does the same when it is only brushed on top. The friction points go first: behind the ears, under a harness, in the armpits and along the inside of the back legs. A puppy coat feels easy, so many owners find the problem when the first knot already sits flat against the skin.
- Behind the ears and under the harness: the first places a soft coat knots
- Armpits and the inside of the back legs, where the dog rubs as it walks
- A comb that reaches the skin, not a brush that skims the top
- Full service by weight, $75 up to 25 pounds, on a regular cycle
Time alone
Separation worries are the cavapoo's real care issue, so build the alone time early
Both parents are people dogs. The AKC calls the Cavalier very eager to please its human and the poodle very people oriented, and a cavapoo usually inherits that attachment in full. Some dogs cope with a working day alone; others start to pace, whine or chew the door frame soon after the car leaves. VCA Animal Hospitals describes separation anxiety as distress such as vocalizing, destruction or house soiling in a dog left alone, often starting as the owner gets ready to go.
Daycare helps with the hours, because a dog in a matched playgroup is not alone, but it is company rather than a cure. A dog with real separation distress needs practice at home and, if it is severe, a conversation with your vet. VCA's advice includes a predictable routine, new chew toys and absences lengthened slowly and at random. Our trainers offer private sessions from $94 for owners who want a plan, and the free evaluation shows us how your cavapoo copes with a few hours in our building.
- 01
Start with absences of a minute or two while the dog is calm, and come back before it fusses
- 02
Lengthen the time slowly and vary it, so the dog cannot predict a long day from a short one
- 03
Leave a chew toy or a stuffed food toy that only appears when you go out
- 04
Keep greetings and goodbyes low-key at the door
- 05
Book daycare on your longest days, and call your vet if the distress at home gets worse
The small group
In daycare a cavapoo belongs with the small dogs, matched by size and temperament
Our playgroups run 7 to 10 dogs, matched by size and temperament at the free evaluation, which takes place on weekday mornings between 6:30 and 9:30 by appointment. A cavapoo goes in with the small dogs, and within that group our handlers look at play style: a gentle, Cavalier-like dog that wants a soft chase needs different friends from a bouncy, poodle-like one that wants to wrestle. Both are normal. The evaluation needs Rabies, DHPP and Bordetella on file and a current city dog license.
Half days suit many cavapoos: a morning of play, then a nap at home. A young, sturdy one may want the full day. The AKC notes that Cavaliers keep their scenting and hunting instincts and may not come when called, so the fenced turf yard and the indoor floors are a safer place for a cavapoo to run than an open field. In Rockport, Gloucester, Essex and Manchester-by-the-Sea, the Pup Van collects and returns for $10 each way.
| What a cavapoo books | Price | When it fits |
|---|---|---|
| Half-day daycare | $33 | A social morning, then a nap at home |
| Full-day daycare | $42 | The young cavapoo with play to spare |
| Half-day 10-pack | $290 | Two or three regular mornings a week |
| 20-minute at-home walk | $25 | A midday break on a day at home |
| Full-service groom, up to 25 lb | $75 | Every cycle, booked onto a daycare day if you like |
This coast
Salt, sand and burrs reach a cavapoo's coat fast, so beach days and woods walks need a plan
Gloucester's beaches open to dogs from October 1 at the time of writing: Good Harbor on even-numbered days until March 31 and Wingaersheek on odd-numbered days until April 30. A small dog with a poodle-type coat comes off the sand carrying half of it, and salt water left to dry pulls the hair into knots. Rinse with fresh water at home, dry the ears and the body all the way through, and comb the friction points before bed. The Cavalier side often loves the water; the coat does not.
Inland, Dogtown Common's 3,600 acres of woods and boulders and the trails at Ravenswood Park collect burrs from late summer, and soft leg and ear feathering holds them. Tick season here runs April to November, and a dense coat hides a tick well, so part the hair at the ears, armpits and toes after every woods walk. In winter, a small dog in a short cut feels the wind off the harbor; rinse the road salt off its legs and belly after a sidewalk walk.
- Fresh-water rinse and a full dry after any beach day, ears included
- Burr and tick check at the legs, ears and toes after the woods, April to November
- Road salt rinsed off the legs and belly after winter sidewalks
- Cut lengths and add-ons live on our cockapoo and cavapoo grooming page
Health notes
Health notes: the Cavalier heart, small knees and the ears, all for your vet to check
VCA lists the Cavalier King Charles spaniel and the miniature and toy poodle among the breeds predisposed to mitral valve disease, a leaking heart valve whose earliest sign is usually a murmur your vet hears with a stethoscope. Later signs include a chronic, hacking cough and less stamina. A daycare team cannot hear a murmur. What our handlers can notice is a cavapoo that tires sooner than it used to, and that change is worth telling your vet about. Ask your vet how often your dog's heart should be checked.
The AKC notes that slipping kneecaps are more likely in toy and miniature poodles, and it lists patella luxation and middle ear infections among the Cavalier's health issues. A small dog that skips a step on a back leg, or shakes its head after a swim, is showing you something for your vet. Because a cavapoo is a cross rather than an AKC breed, ask the breeder which health tests the Cavalier and poodle parents passed; the AKC pages for both breeds list the recommended screenings.
- Tiring sooner than usual on a play day: mention it to your vet
- A skip on a back leg for a step or two
- Head shaking or a sour smell from an ear after water
- Ask the breeder for the parents' heart, knee and eye results
