Small doodle grooming
Cockapoo and Cavapoo grooming in Gloucester, MA
A cockapoo is a cocker spaniel crossed with a poodle, most often a miniature, and a cavapoo is a Cavalier King Charles spaniel crossed with a poodle. Both tend to inherit the spaniel's long, feathered ears and a soft coat that falls somewhere between silky and curly. That combination shapes the whole groom.
Fine coat
A cockapoo or cavapoo coat is fine and soft, so tangles start small and spread fast
Both crosses blend a silky spaniel coat with a curly poodle coat. Wikipedia describes the cockapoo's coat as straight, wavy or curled, and the AKC describes the Cavalier parent's coat as silky, with long feathering on the ears, chest and legs. The common thread is fine, soft hair, and fine hair wraps around itself easily. A tangle the size of a pea at the base of an ear can spread across the whole ear root within a week or two if nobody combs it out.
The AKC's advice for the cocker spaniel is that grooming sessions missed are not easily made up, and the warning fits both crosses, since they carry the same feathered coat on the ears, chest and legs. Size helps and hurts. A small dog has less coat to brush, but its friction points sit close together, and a dog who spends hours on a lap or in a harness rubs the same spots all day. Feathering also catches burrs and wet sand.
- Ear leathers and the base of each ear
- Chest and belly feathering
- Armpits and the inside of the back legs
- Under the collar or harness
Spaniel ears
The spaniel ear is the part of a cockapoo or cavapoo that needs the most care
Long, hanging, well-feathered ears come from the spaniel side of both crosses. Wikipedia's cockapoo entry notes that those floppy ears trap moisture and raise the risk of infection, and the AKC advises cocker owners to learn from their vet how to clean the ear canals, especially after a bath. The AKC also warns that the skin at the edge of a spaniel ear is thin and can be pierced by over-vigorous combing, so ear-edge tangles call for patience rather than force.
At Dogtown the face trim, $10 between full grooms, tidies the hair around the eyes, muzzle and ears, which keeps the ear feathering out of the water bowl and the beach sand. The ear canal itself belongs to your vet. If your vet has given you a cleaning routine, follow it at home after swims and baths, and tell the groomer at check-in about any ear your dog guards or shakes. A sore or sour-smelling ear means a vet visit before the groom.
- Comb the ear feathering gently, edges last
- Dry the ears after every swim and bath
- Ask your vet about canal cleaning
- Head shaking or a sour smell: the vet first, the groom after
Puppy cut lengths
For a beach dog, a short puppy cut is the length that survives the sand
A puppy cut takes the whole body to one even length and leaves a rounded, tidy face. On a small doodle it is the most practical haircut, and it sits within the full-service price as a custom cut. The real question is length. A longer cut looks plush for a week; a shorter one dries faster after a swim, holds less sand and lets a brush reach the skin. Tell the groomer how often your dog swims and how often you brush, and the length follows.
On Cape Ann the beach months are the cold ones. At the time of writing, Gloucester admits dogs to Good Harbor on even-numbered days from October 1 to March 31 and to Wingaersheek on odd-numbered days from October 1 to April 30, so a cockapoo that swims in November and rides home damp starts felting before it dries. For a dog on the sand every week, a sensible plan is a shorter cut on the legs and belly with the ears and face kept a little fuller.
- 01
Count the swims: weekly beach days through the off-season call for the shorter end
- 02
Count the brushing: twice a week to the skin can carry a little more length
- 03
Choose the face: rounded and full, or closer and cleaner around the muzzle
- 04
Bring a photo to check-in and say what you liked or disliked about the last cut

Cycle and price
Most small doodles hold a cut for six to eight weeks, at $75 or $85 a visit
A puppy cut on a cockapoo or cavapoo usually keeps its shape for six to eight weeks before the ear roots and armpits start to felt, and a longer cut needs the shorter end of that range. Full service is $75 up to 25 pounds, which covers most dogs of both crosses, and $85 from 26 to 50 pounds for a larger cockapoo. Bath only is $55 or $65 in the same bands, and the final price is confirmed at check-in after the coat assessment.
A skipped cycle shows up as time on the table. De-matting is charged at $15 per 20 minutes, agreed at check-in, and on these crosses it usually goes into the ear roots and armpits. Between full grooms, a $10 face trim keeps the eyes and ears tidy and a $10 sanitary trim keeps the rear clean. Teeth brushing is $10 and nail clipping $16. Book the next appointment at pick-up and $5 comes off it.

At home
Between grooms, comb the ears and armpits every other day to keep the cycle on track
Five minutes every other day does more than an hour on a Sunday. Work through the ear feathering with a metal comb, then the armpits, chest and the inside of the back legs, and finish with a quick line brush over the body. If the comb catches, go back with a slicker brush before you move on. Our how-to on brushing a doodle between grooms shows the line-brushing method, and it works the same on a 15-pound cavapoo as on a large doodle.
After a beach day, rinse the salt water out with fresh water and dry the ears and coat completely before the dog curls up. If your cockapoo or cavapoo also comes to daycare, put the groom on that day: drop off between 6:30 and 9:30 AM on a weekday and collect a clean dog between 4 and 6:30 PM. In Rockport, Gloucester, Essex and Manchester-by-the-Sea, the Pup Van can do the daycare driving for $10 each way.
