Puppy training
Puppy class vs private puppy training: which to book first
The first weeks with a puppy go fast, and the booking decision is often made in a hurry. This page lays out what each route involves at Dogtown, how many sessions each runs to, and the signs that tell you a shy puppy should start one-on-one before it joins anything busier.
The numbers
Sessions start from $94 either way; Tiny Tails runs to 8, 12 or 16 of them
Tiny Tails Puppy School takes pups between 8 and 16 weeks and comes in three lengths: 4 weeks with 8 sessions, 6 weeks with 12, or 8 weeks with 16, at two sessions a week. Private sessions have no fixed count; the plan sets it, and it ends when the goal is met. Training sessions at Dogtown start from $94, and because the session count is what moves the total, Gabriella Pope, our Director of Training & Canine Behaviorist, confirms the plan and the investment after a short assessment rather than quoting blind.
Two neighbors on the menu matter here. AKC S.T.A.R. Puppy is a fixed 6 weeks and 12 sessions for puppies from 8 weeks to 6 months, so it is the route for a pup who arrives after 16 weeks and still needs a puppy program. Brave & Balanced, for pups from 4 months who need support with fear, handling sensitivity or wariness of strangers, runs 8, 12 or 16 sessions and picks up where a shy pup's private work leaves off.
| Route | Sessions | Length | Age | Price |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Tiny Tails Puppy School | 8, 12 or 16 | 4, 6 or 8 weeks | 8 to 16 weeks | From $94 per session |
| AKC S.T.A.R. Puppy | 12 | 6 weeks | 8 weeks to 6 months | From $94 per session |
| Brave & Balanced | 8, 12 or 16 | 4, 6 or 8 weeks | 4 months and up | From $94 per session |
| Private sessions | As the plan needs | Until the goal is met | Any age | From $94 per session |
What decides it
Your puppy's reaction to new things decides the order, not the price
The deciding factor is how your puppy handles novelty. A pup who walks into a new room, sniffs and looks back at you is ready for a structured program with other people and puppies about. A pup who flattens, hides behind your legs or turns down a treat it normally grabs is telling you the setting is too much, and a few private sessions to build trust and a start on handling usually make the later program far more useful.
Timing is the second factor, and it argues for starting early. The American Veterinary Society of Animal Behavior calls the first three months the primary window for socialization and says puppies can generally start socialization classes at 7 to 8 weeks, with at least one set of vaccines a week before the first class and a first deworming. Tell us where your pup's vaccine series stands when you enquire; Gabby will talk through your vet's schedule at the assessment.
The household is the third. Two adults and a ten-year-old who all need to give the same cue get a lot from private time, where everyone takes a turn on the leash. A household that mostly needs a routine and a puppy who meets the world calmly does well with the program's steady rhythm of two sessions a week.
- Curious puppy who recovers quickly from a startle: Tiny Tails first
- Puppy who hides, freezes or refuses food in new places: private sessions first
- Several family members who need the same cues: add private time
- Past 16 weeks: AKC S.T.A.R. Puppy, Bright Beginnings or Brave & Balanced
The shy puppy
A shy puppy should start one-on-one, then join the program once it eats in the room
For a shy pup the private sessions come first, and they are short. The goal is a puppy who will take food, explore and accept gentle handling in the training space with nobody pushing. That usually means a quiet setting, choices the pup controls and plenty of food. Once the pup can manage that, the 8-to-16-week window is often still open, and Tiny Tails can use whatever is left of it.
Pushing a fearful puppy into a busy room early can backfire. The AKC's trainers warn that forcing a puppy toward things that scare it is likely to backfire and create a bigger, possibly long-lasting fear, and they advise letting the puppy choose how close to get. Private sessions are where that choice is easiest to give, because nothing else in the room needs the trainer's attention.

Cape Ann puppies
On Cape Ann, the season your puppy arrives changes where it can practice
A puppy who comes home in the fall gets the beaches: at the time of writing Gloucester allows dogs on Good Harbor on even-numbered days from October 1 to March 31 and on Wingaersheek on odd-numbered days from October 1 to April 30. A spring or summer puppy does not, because Good Harbor closes to dogs on April 1 and Wingaersheek on May 1, and neither reopens to dogs until October.
The dog park is not a puppy option either. The Gloucester Dog Park at Stage Fort does not admit puppies under 4 months, so for the whole Tiny Tails age range the controlled settings are the training room, quiet sidewalks and calm adult dogs you already know. Summer pups also meet Fiesta crowds and the July 3 fireworks before they are 16 weeks old, one more reason a sound-sensitive pup benefits from private groundwork early.
- Fall puppies: Good Harbor on even dates and Wingaersheek on odd dates
- Spring and summer puppies: quiet streets and the training room instead
- Gloucester Dog Park: no puppies under 4 months
- Fiesta week and July 3: plan a quiet evening for a young pup
