Private training is the right choice when the problem is specific, the schedule is awkward or the dog cannot yet work near others. Every Dogtown program is tailored to the dog, so private work fits the way we already train: one dog, one household, one set of goals, rather than a curriculum a class marches through.

Private sessions suit the dog with one clear issue: jumping on guests, bolting through the door, pulling toward every dog on Eastern Ave, ignoring recall the moment a gull moves. They suit the household that cannot make a fixed twice-a-week block and needs sessions that move with shifts at the hospital or the fishing schedule. And they suit the dog who is too worried or too reactive to learn with other dogs in the room, at least for now.
They also suit owners who want the whole family trained. A dog that listens to one adult and ignores the teenager has a handler problem, not a dog problem, and one-on-one time is where everyone's hands get on the leash. What private training is not: a shortcut. A dog with reactivity still needs the full arc of trigger work, and Gabby will recommend React Less, Relax More or another Level 3 program if a handful of sessions will not do it.

A session
An hour that starts with the why and ends with your homework
The first session is the assessment. Gabby watches the dog, asks about its history and what happens before and after the behavior, and works out why it is happening: fear, frustration, lack of skill, or a reward you did not know you were giving. The plan follows from the why. A dog that jumps for attention and a dog that jumps from anxiety get different plans even though the behavior looks the same.
Later sessions are practical. You handle the leash, Gabby coaches, and the environment is chosen to match the stage: the quiet indoor floors first, the turf yard with a playgroup visible at a distance, the sidewalk outside, and eventually the place the problem actually happens. Every session ends with two or three things to practise and a way to tell whether they are working. Progress is reviewed at each visit and the plan changes when the dog does.
Where a private plan follows an existing program, it keeps that program's shape. The 1:1 Private CGC Fast Track, for example, is 5 weeks and 10 sessions aimed at the Canine Good Citizen items a dog keeps failing.

Cost and booking
From $94 a session, with no set number of sessions unless the program has one
Private sessions start from $94 each. Because the plan is built after the assessment, we do not publish a package price; you will know the recommended number of sessions and the total before the second visit. Some private plans follow a program with a fixed length, such as the 1:1 Private CGC Fast Track at 10 sessions over 5 weeks; others run until the behavior is where you want it and then stop.
Book through the contact form, and a reply arrives within one hour on business days. Bring vaccination records to the assessment. If you later want your dog in daycare, Dogtown Academy or an overnight stay, the free evaluation on a weekday morning between 6:30 and 9:30 AM opens those, with Rabies, DHPP and Bordetella on file and a current city license. Gloucester's license is issued by the City Clerk at 9 Dale Ave, $20 for a spayed or neutered dog.

Why here
A canine behaviorist with the building to stage any problem
Gabriella Pope leads every private session. She is Dogtown's Director of Training & Canine Behaviorist, with a B.S. in Biochemistry, ten-plus years with behaviorally complex dogs, work with Autistic youth and foster experience through Cape Ann Animal Aid. Her training is relationship-based and fear- and force-free, built on positive reinforcement, mindfulness and clear communication, and she is candid when a problem needs a longer program than a few private hours.
Most problems need a set-up, and Dogtown has them on hand: a front door that opens onto a lobby with real people coming and going, a grooming studio for a dog that hates the table, matched playgroups of 7 to 10 dogs behind a fence for leash work at a distance, a treadmill, a sensory garden and 10,000 square feet of indoor and outdoor space. A private session here can rehearse the exact moment that goes wrong at home, then rehearse it again.

Getting here
Sessions inside our hours, and the Gloucester places your homework will use
We are at 210 Eastern Ave, Gloucester, and private sessions are scheduled within our hours: Monday to Friday 6:30 AM to 6:30 PM, Saturday 8 AM to 6 PM. If your dog also comes for daycare or Academy days, the Pup Van runs for $10 each way in Rockport, Gloucester, Essex and Manchester-by-the-Sea; for training you will usually drive in yourself, because you are half the session.
Homework happens where you live. A recall plan in winter uses Good Harbor Beach on an even-numbered day, open to dogs from October 1 until the plover closure on April 1, or Wingaersheek on the odd days. A loose-leash plan uses the Gloucester station area, where the Rockport line takes leashed dogs only off-peak and never between 7 and 10 AM or 4 and 7 PM. A stranger plan uses a bench outside the Gloucester Dog Park at Stage Fort Park, 65 Hough Ave, where people and dogs come and go at a distance you control. Gabby will match the exercise to the place.
