After surgery
Grooming a cat after surgery: timing and the vet's say-so
Surgery leaves a cat with a shaved patch, a cone and two weeks of not being able to wash. The coat suffers, especially a long one in the heating season. What you can do is limited on purpose, and the limits are your vet's.
The coat
What the coat is doing while the cat heals
A cone stops a cat washing anywhere below the neck. Within a few days the coat along the spine goes greasy and the rump collects loose hair the cat would normally have swallowed. On a long-haired cat, a Maine Coon or a domestic longhair, the collar edge rubs the ruff into a ring of felt and the armpits mat as the cat lies on one side.
The shaved patch regrows on its own timetable, and the new hair comes in soft and dense, which on a long coat means it tangles with the old coat as it lengthens. None of this hurts the cat the way the surgery site could, which is why the coat waits. Between November and March, when dry indoor air on Cape Ann speeds up matting, it waits with more mats.
- A greasy stripe down the spine within days of the cone going on
- A ring of matted ruff where the collar edge rubs
- Armpit and flank mats on the side the cat lies on
Timing
The date is the vet's, and the studio waits for it
Ask the vet before you leave the clinic: when can the cat be groomed, can the coat be wet, and is there anywhere on the body the groomer should not touch. Get the answers on the discharge sheet. The studio grooms a post-surgical cat only with that clearance, and the front desk will ask for it when you book.
The timing depends on the procedure, the sutures, the cat's age and how the healing is going, all of which are the vet's to judge. A spay, a dental, a lump removal and an orthopedic repair have different answers. Our groomers do not estimate, and neither does this page. A groom before a planned surgery, timed with your vet, means less work coming out.
- Ask the vet: when, whether water is allowed, and where not to touch
- Get it on the discharge sheet or in a message you can show us
- For planned surgery, ask the vet about a groom beforehand
At home
What you can do while the cone is on
Everything below sits inside the vet's instructions, and if any step contradicts what the vet told you, the vet wins. Do nothing at or near the surgical site; do not lift the cone unless the vet said you may; and stop at the first sign the cat is uncomfortable, because a healing cat has less patience than a well one, with good reason.
The aim is to keep the coat from felting so that the first groom after clearance is a comb-out and a few clipped mats rather than a shave. Ten minutes a day is plenty, and most of it is combing the parts of the cat the cone leaves reachable and the cat cannot reach itself, which is nearly all of it.
- 01
Read the discharge sheet first and mark the areas the vet said not to touch
- 02
Once a day, comb the neck, the ruff outside the cone and the shoulders
- 03
Comb the spine and rump in short strokes, well away from anything shaved or stitched
- 04
Wipe the chin, the corners of the eyes and inside the cone with a damp cloth
- 05
Check the flank the cat lies on and tease small mats apart with your fingers
At the studio
The first groom back, clearance in hand
Once cleared, book the smallest service that fixes the problem. For most cats that is Minimal Trims at $45: the cone ring, the armpit mats and the greasy rump clipped short, no water. Add nail clipping at $20; claws grow while a cat is confined. The Full Bath at $95 waits for the vet to clear water, and the Full Service at $120 is for a long coat that has matted through.
The appointment happens in the quiet cat studio at 210 Eastern Ave, away from the dog floors, with a cat behavior specialist who has read the vet's notes and works around the areas flagged. A sore cat is handled in short blocks, kept off its bad side and not asked to stand for long. If it cannot be handled safely, the groomer stops. Nothing is done at the surgical site, ever.
- Minimal Trims $45: cone ring, armpit mats and rump, no bath
- Nail clipping $20: claws grow while the cat is confined
- Full Bath $95 only once the vet has cleared water
The vet
The site, the stitches and the cone are the vet's
Anything that happens at or around the incision is a call to the vet who did the surgery. That includes how the site looks, whether the cat is licking it, when the cone can come off and whether the cat is eating and using the litter box normally. A groomer can say a shaved patch looks different from last week; only the vet can say whether that matters.
If the practice is closed and something has changed suddenly, the City of Gloucester publishes a list of local emergency veterinary offices, and Massachusetts Veterinary Referral Hospital in Woburn takes emergencies around the clock. Owners from Rockport, Essex and Manchester-by-the-Sea should know that drive time well before they need it. The groom can always wait another week or two.
- Anything at the incision: the surgeon's practice, not the studio
- Cone on or off, and for how long: the vet decides
- After hours: Gloucester's emergency vet list, or the Woburn referral hospital
