What are "minimal trims" for cats?
Most cats do not need a full groom. They need a specific patch dealt with: the felt in the armpits, the mess under the tail, the tufts between the pads that slide on the kitchen floor. Minimal Trims exists for exactly that, and it is the service our front desk suggests most often to first-time cat owners.
The short version
Minimal Trims is a targeted tidy-up: clippers and scissors where they are needed, no water
The name is literal. A minimal trim addresses the parts of the coat that are causing a problem and leaves the rest alone. On the cat menu it is listed as trim and partial shaving with no bath, priced at $45. The cat is not put in water, not dried, and not on the table for long. For a cat who tolerates handling in short doses, that is the point.
It sits between a nail clip and a bath. Nail clipping at $20 touches only the claws. Minimal Trims touches the coat, but only in patches. The Full Bath at $95 and the Full Service at $120 are whole-cat services, with water, and the Full Service is where a full lion cut lives. If you are unsure which you need, describe the problem when you book and the groomer will confirm on the day.

A Minimal Trims appointment at 210 Eastern Ave usually runs shorter than any other cat service except nails. The cat comes in by carrier, goes straight to the cat studio, and is handled by a cat behavior specialist who keeps restraint to a towel and a hand. Clippers are used with a blade held flat against the skin for mats and for the belly; scissors with rounded tips for the eyes and the pads.
Because there is no bath, there is no dryer, which for many cats is the most stressful part of a full groom. The cat leaves with the problem patches gone and the rest of the coat as it arrived. If the groomer finds more matting than you described, she calls you before going further, and the answer may be to move up to the Full Service rather than trim around a felted coat.

The cats who live on Minimal Trims are the ones a full groom would overwhelm
The first group is the cats who cannot cope with a long session: nervous cats, seniors, cats who have never been groomed. Twenty minutes of targeted clipping they can manage; an hour with water and a dryer they cannot. The second group is the cats with a specific, recurring problem. Persians and Exotics whose eye hair irritates the eyes. Maine Coons and Ragdolls whose britches collect mess in the litter tray. Heavy domestic shorthairs whose bellies mat because they cannot reach them. Long-haired cats whose paw-pad tufts pick up rock salt and sand from a porch in Rockport in February.
A trim removes the problem, not the cause. The armpit that matted will mat again in the same place once the coat grows. Comb the trimmed patches for thirty seconds every second day and the interval between visits stretches from six weeks toward ten. Book the next visit before the mats return rather than after; a small trim on a calm cat is always quicker than a big one on a fed-up one.
