Cat de-matting: removing mats calmly, in a quiet studio
Mats on a cat are not a cosmetic problem. They tighten as they grow, pull the skin underneath, trap moisture and hide whatever is going on beneath them. They also hurt, which is why a matted cat so often becomes a cat who bites the brush. Here is how we take them off without a fight, and what it costs.
Why cats mat
Mats start where the cat cannot reach and the coat rubs: belly, armpits, behind the ears
Every long-haired cat sheds an undercoat, and when the loose hair is not combed out it tangles with the coat that is still attached. Friction finishes the job. The armpits, the inside of the back legs, the belly and the collar line behind the ears mat first. On Cape Ann the worst stretch is late winter into spring: months of dry indoor heat leave the coat full of static, then the spring shed arrives and the loose undercoat has nowhere to go.
Some cats mat because of the coat they were born with. Persians, Himalayans, Ragdolls and Maine Coons carry a fine undercoat that felts quickly. Others mat because something changed: an older cat with a sore back stops grooming its hindquarters, an overweight cat cannot reach its own belly, a cat recovering from illness lets the coat go for a few weeks. If a cat who kept itself perfectly for years suddenly turns up matted, mention it to your vet, because the mats are usually the symptom rather than the cause.

Our method
Mats come off with clippers under the mat, not with a comb through it
Cat skin is thin, loose and moves with the mat, so pulling a tight mat with a comb or cutting into it with scissors is how cats get hurt at home. Our groomers work the other way round: they lift the mat, slide a clipper blade between the mat and the skin, and take the mat off in one piece. It is quicker, it does not pull, and it leaves smooth skin behind instead of a nicked patch. Small mats that have only just started can sometimes be teased apart with a comb, and the groomer does that where it is kinder.
The whole session runs in the cat studio, a separate room away from the dog floors. Our cat behavior specialists use minimal restraint, keep the pace slow and watch for the early signals, a flicking tail, flattened ears, a twitch along the back, that tell them to stop before the cat decides for them. If your cat cannot be handled safely on the day, we do not push. We stop, explain what we found, and refer you to your veterinarian, who can decide whether the mats should come off under medical care.

$45 for a few mats, $120 when the whole coat has to come off
De-matting is not a separate line on our cat price list; it is done inside two services. Minimal Trims at $45 is the right booking for a handful of mats: the groomer clips them out and does any partial shaving needed, with no bath. When the mats have joined up into a pelt across the belly, sides or legs, the coat is beyond spot work and the answer is the Full Service groom at $120, which shaves the body and includes a full bath, trims and nails.
If you are not sure which your cat needs, book the Minimal Trims and tell the front desk what you are seeing; the groomer confirms the plan after the assessment and talks to you before doing anything bigger. Booking is online through MoeGo or in the Dogtown app, and there is no evaluation for grooming. Nail clipping on its own is $20, and a Full Bath with brush-out and nails, for a cat who is greasy but not matted, is $95.

Why Dogtown
A quiet room on Eastern Ave and a groomer who tells you the truth about the coat
The two things that make de-matting go badly are noise and haste. Our cat studio at 210 Eastern Ave in Gloucester is a separate room inside the building, so a cat waiting in a carrier does not hear the daycare groups or the dog dryers. And because every cat is assessed before the service begins, the cat with three mats gets three mats clipped, not a shave sold as a package.
We will also be straight about what we see under the mats. Tight mats can hide sores, fleas, ticks picked up on a Cape Ann porch during tick season, or skin that has been damp for weeks. When we find something, we tell you and point you to your vet. Gloucester publishes a list of local and emergency veterinary offices, and Massachusetts Veterinary Referral Hospital in Woburn is open around the clock for anything urgent.

Getting here
Bring the cat in a carrier, Monday to Saturday, and skip the storm days
We are at 210 Eastern Ave in Gloucester, on the Route 127 side of the city heading toward Rockport, open Monday to Friday 6:30 AM to 6:30 PM and Saturday 8 AM to 6 PM. Sunday is closed except for overnight-stay dog pick-ups and drop-offs, so cat appointments fall Monday to Saturday. A hard-sided carrier with a towel inside and another draped over the door keeps a matted cat from panicking on the drive.
Between appointments, the best thing you can do for a mat-prone cat on Cape Ann is a five-minute comb through the friction points two or three times a week, starting in February before the spring shed.
