Thacher Island

Are dogs allowed on Thacher Island?

Thacher Island sits about a mile off Rockport, home to the twin lighthouses of the Cape Ann Light Station and three miles of groomed trails. It is a summer trip by launch or kayak, and your dog sits this one out. This page covers who sets the rule, how the launch works, and where a Rockport dog can be that day.

The rule

No pets on either island, under the association's rule and the federal refuge's

Two bodies speak to dogs on Thacher, and they agree. The Thacher & Straitsmouth Islands Association, which runs the launch, says on its visit page that both Thacher and Straitsmouth are wildlife refuges and are off-limits to pets. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service holds the northern 22 acres of the 52-acre island as Thacher Island National Wildlife Refuge, and its rules page states that pets are not allowed on the refuge.

The refuge rules go further: no hunting, fishing, trapping, camping, fires, drones or model aircraft, and no collecting or disturbing of plants, animals or historic items. The Fish and Wildlife Service describes the island as home to herring gulls and great black-backed gulls, with feeding, resting and nesting habitat for migratory songbirds and shorebirds. The association prints its no-pets note right beside the launch details, so treat it as part of the booking, not a footnote.

  • Thacher Island: no pets, by the association and the refuge rules
  • Straitsmouth Island: also a wildlife refuge, also off-limits to pets
  • The federal refuge is the northern 22 acres of a 52-acre island
  • Ask the association about a service animal before you book

The launch

The launch leaves Granite Pier with six seats a trip, and resumes in June 2027

The association's launch is how most people get out. Every launch leaves from Rockport's Granite Pier, at the end of Wharf Road off Granite Street, and parking is on the pier's upper deck: free for Rockport residents and $10 for everyone else, paid at the red parking shack. In summer the launch runs to Thacher on Wednesdays, Saturdays and some Tuesdays, with Straitsmouth trips on alternate Tuesdays. Each trip carries six passengers, children under 3 cannot ride under Coast Guard restrictions, and every seat is reserved through Eventbrite.

The islands are closed for 2026. The association says reservations open with a published schedule in May 2027 and launches resume in June 2027, and that the islands close to the public at 5 PM. Cancel less than a week before departure, or miss the boat, and the fee is charged anyway; a trip cancelled for weather or rough seas is refunded. A $5 donation is suggested for each visitor over 14 who lands.

By kayak or your own boat

Kayaks and private boats land by ramp only, and the no-pets rule comes along

Some visitors paddle. The association puts Thacher about 3 miles from Rockport Harbor and warns that it is not a simple paddle for novices or anyone with limited endurance. Neither island has a dock: both are reached by ramps used only by the launch, dinghies and kayaks, and only while keepers live on the islands from June through August. Thacher has three free guest moorings about 50 yards off its ramp, and boaters must call the keeper before coming. Arriving in your own boat does not change the rule, since the islands are off-limits to pets however you get there.

With a dog, the island is something to look at. The association notes that Thacher can be seen from the shore on Marmion Way, and its twin lighthouse towers each stand 124 feet tall. Marmion Way is a public street well outside the downtown district, so Rockport's by-law allows a leash or direct voice control there, with the owner present and a leash in hand. On the water side, keep your dog on the road and off the wet ledges.

  • About 3 miles by kayak from Rockport Harbor, and not a novice paddle
  • No docks: ramps only, June through August
  • Three guest moorings off Thacher; call the keeper first
  • Watch the towers from Marmion Way with your dog ashore

Where your dog can go

The nearest places a Rockport dog is allowed: Halibut Point, the town beaches off-season and two town parks

If the plan is a Rockport day with the dog, choose ground that allows it. Halibut Point State Park, at the northern tip of town, takes leashed dogs, and our page on it covers the quarry rim and the footing. Rockport's public beaches take dogs from September 16 to May 31 on a leash or under direct voice control, which means they are closed for the whole launch season. Millbrook Meadow, the town park across from Front Beach, is a leashed stroll in any month, and Woodland Acres in Pigeon Cove is the wooded option.

Whatever you choose, make it a day you are not on the island. A dog left in a car at the pier for a boat trip is a dog at risk in July, and Massachusetts law forbids confining an animal in a motor vehicle in a way that could reasonably be expected to threaten its health through extreme heat or cold. A crate at home, a walker or a daycare day is the safer plan for the hours you are offshore.

On launch day

On launch day, a daycare day: the Pup Van collects in Rockport for $10 each way

However long your island visit runs, the dog can spend it in a playgroup. Dogtown's daycare is a full day at $42 or a half day at $33, in a group of 7 to 10 dogs matched by size and temperament, on indoor play floors and an outdoor turf yard with pools and platforms. Rockport is one of the four Pup Van towns, so the van collects your dog at home and brings it back for $10 each way, and you can drive straight to Granite Pier.

Drop-off at 210 Eastern Ave in Gloucester runs from 6:30 to 9:30 AM on weekdays and 8 to 10 AM on Saturdays, and pick-up runs from 4 to 6:30 PM on weekdays and 4 to 6 PM on Saturdays, which covers both of the association's main launch days. Every dog new to us starts with a free evaluation on a weekday morning between 6:30 and 9:30 AM, with Rabies, DHPP and Bordetella records and a current license. First-time customers can use FIRST15 for 15 percent off that first daycare day.

Asked and answered

Questions people ask about this

Short, complete answers you can act on today. More in the full FAQ.

Can I bring my dog on the Thacher Island launch?
No. The Thacher & Straitsmouth Islands Association says both islands are wildlife refuges and off-limits to pets, so a dog has nowhere to go once the launch lands. Each trip carries six passengers from Rockport's Granite Pier by reservation, and the islands stay closed until launches resume in June 2027.
Are dogs allowed on Straitsmouth Island?
No. The association describes Straitsmouth as a wildlife refuge too and lists it as off-limits to pets in the same note as Thacher. Straitsmouth trips leave from the same pier on alternate summer Tuesdays, and the association warns that the island does have ticks, so it advises bug spray and proper footwear for people.
Why is Thacher Island closed to pets?
Part of it is a national wildlife refuge. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service manages the northern 22 acres for herring gulls, great black-backed gulls and migrating songbirds and shorebirds, and its rules say pets are not allowed on the refuge. The island association applies a no-pets rule to both of its islands, Thacher and Straitsmouth.
How much does the Thacher Island launch cost?
At the time of writing, $40 per adult and $10 per child under 12, or $15 per adult for Rockport residents, whose children under 12 ride free. Paid-up association members ride free but still need a reservation. Parking on Granite Pier's upper deck is free for Rockport residents and $10 for non-residents.
Where can I see Thacher Island with my dog?
From the shore. The association says the island can be viewed from Marmion Way in Rockport, a public street where the town allows a leash or direct voice control, as long as you carry a leash. Keep your dog off the wet granite at the water's edge, and save beach time for September 16 to May 31.
