North Andover Town Forest
North Andover Town Forest with your dog: 159 acres off Dale Street
North Andover bought this land in 1856 for its poor farm, according to the Friends of North Andover Trails, and today it meets Essex County Greenbelt's Farnsworth Reservation across South Bradford Street. The walk is short and level, the rules are the town's, and the fall brings archers. Here is what the town requires, where the trail runs, and how to plan around the season.
The rule
Town rules for town land: a leash every minute and the trail underfoot
The parcel the town lists as Town Farm / Town Forest falls under North Andover's open space rules, a two-page sheet in force since September 2007. For a dog owner it comes down to three requirements: a leash for every minute you are on the land, a dog that stays on the trail rather than in the undergrowth, and waste bagged and disposed of properly. The sheet gives its reason in the same sentence, so that dogs do not disturb wildlife or damage vegetation.
The land opens at sunrise and closes at sunset. Fires, alcohol and motorized vehicles are prohibited on town property, and nobody may camp, stay overnight, or run a commercial or special activity or event there without written permission from the Conservation Commission. If you walk dogs for a living, ask the Conservation Department at 978-688-9530 before you bring a paid group. Everyone else just needs the leash, the bags and daylight.
- Leash on from the car and back to it
- On the trail, out of the undergrowth
- Waste bagged and disposed of properly
- Sunrise to sunset
The trail
Three-quarters of a mile on an old lane, from Dale Street to South Bradford Street
The town lists the forest off three roads, Dale Street, South Bradford Street and Carriage Chase Road, but publishes no trail map. The Friends of North Andover Trails, whose guide covers the town's conservation land, describe one quiet woodland trail of about three-quarters of a mile from Dale Street to South Bradford Street, fairly straight and level, about 45 minutes on foot. It begins behind the baseball diamond, and their December 2026 hike is set to meet at the Gallagher Field parking lot on Dale Street.
Along the way, Town Farm Hill, which the guide says is also called Bear Hill, rises steeply on the right, and the North Andover Youth Services ropes course sits on the left; a dog on a short leash passes it best when nobody is climbing. Rows of red pine, possibly planted by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930s, are reaching the end of their lives and falling on their own, so watch for new trunks across the lane after wind. In spring, lady's slipper orchids flower at the trail edge.
A longer walk
Cross South Bradford Street into Farnsworth for a loop past vernal pools
The Town Forest trail ends at South Bradford Street, and across the road lies Essex County Greenbelt's Farnsworth Reservation, 212 acres with 2.7 miles of easy trail. Greenbelt's 2022 map shows the Town Forest on Farnsworth's western edge, and its property page describes Farnsworth as a link between the Town Farm forest and Harold Parker State Forest. Joining the two turns a short out-and-back into a proper outing, with a boardwalk and Purgatory Swamp in the middle.
The rules shift as you cross. On town land the leash is required at all times. On Greenbelt land the guidance is to carry a leash and use it where required, follow the posted rules, keep the dog under control and bag the waste, so keeping the leash on for the whole walk meets both. Farnsworth's parking is on the road shoulder, which makes the Dale Street lot the easier place to start a combined walk.

Hunting season
Bow hunting only, with signs posted at the property in season
The town's rules list the Town Farm and Town Forest among six parcels where hunting and trapping are allowed under state and local law, and this entry carries the label bow hunting only. During the season, signs are posted at the properties where hunting is permitted, and the sheet tells visitors to be aware of hunting seasons and to wear blaze orange when appropriate. MassWildlife's 2026 deer seasons run from October 5, when archery opens, to December 31, when primitive firearms season closes.
A bow is quiet, so you may share the woods with an archer and never hear one. Wear orange, put an orange vest or bandana on your dog as MassWildlife suggests, keep the leash short and stay on the lane. Sundays are hunt-free across Massachusetts, which makes a Sunday morning the calmest time for a fall walk here. Ticks wait in the leaf litter through the fall as well, so check your dog's ears, armpits and toes before the drive home.
- Bow hunting only on this parcel
- Signs posted at the property in season
- Deer seasons in 2026: October 5 to December 31
- Orange on both of you; no hunting on Sundays
Dogtown
Pine needles and leaf litter come out at our Gloucester grooming studio
A level woodland lane is a gentle walk, but red pine needles and leaf litter still work their way into a long coat. A bath and brush at Dogtown runs from $55 for a dog up to 25 pounds to $95 for an extra-large long-haired dog, with the final price set at check-in after our groomers look at the coat. Shed Release, at $10, helps a double-coated dog that is dropping undercoat in the fall. Grooming needs no evaluation, so you can book straight away.
The Town Forest is about 50 minutes from 210 Eastern Ave outside rush hour, by our estimate, by Route 114 to Route 128, and North Andover is outside the Pup Van towns. A groom fits best on a day you are already heading to Cape Ann, or alongside a daycare day for a dog that has passed its free evaluation. We do not take dogs to the Town Forest; your dog walks it with you, and we handle the coat afterward.
