Mazurenko Farm with your dog: North Andover's trail rules and hunting season
Mazurenko Farm was a working farm until North Andover bought it in 1988, for recreation and to protect the Lake Cochichewick watershed, and it is still fields, wetland and woods along Bradford Street. That history shapes the rules. This page covers the town's dog rule, the trails the Friends of North Andover Trails map, the parking, and what the hunting season means for a walk here.
The rule
Leashed at all times and kept on the trails, by order of the town
North Andover's Trails and Open Space Rules and Regulations, effective since September 2007, cover every town open space parcel, Mazurenko Farm among them. The dog line is plain: dogs shall be leashed at all times and kept on the trails so they do not disturb the wildlife or damage vegetation, and owners must pick up the waste and dispose of it properly. The same sheet asks everyone to stay on the marked trails, carry out whatever they carry in, and leave natural resources, historical features and town property alone.
The parcels are open from sunrise to sunset. Alcohol, motorized vehicles and fires are banned on town property, and camping or overnight use needs the Conservation Commission's authorization. Violations can be reported to the North Andover Police Department at 978-683-3168, to MassWildlife at 978-263-4347, or to the Conservation Department at 978-688-9530. There is no off-leash exception anywhere on the town's open space, so the leash stays on from the car to the far field and back.
- Leash on at all times
- Stay on the marked trails
- Pick up the waste and dispose of it properly
- Open sunrise to sunset
The trails
Locust, Scout, Ridge and Rea's Pond: about two miles over field, wetland and hill
The town's rules sheet lists Mazurenko Farm on Bradford Street at 104.5 acres and its neighbor Carter Hill at 27, but the town publishes no trail map. The Friends of North Andover Trails, a volunteer group within the North Andover Improvement Society, map the two as one walk of about 146 acres with roughly two miles of trail and a walking time of 30 minutes to two hours. Their guide starts the Locust Trail at a kiosk and stone steps by the Mazurenko Farm parking lot.
Past the kiosk, the Locust Trail crosses a wetland that may flood in spring, with poison ivy along its edges, so keep your dog in the middle of the path. The Scout Trail follows the edge of a flooded meadow to Rea's Pond, where a bench sits on the shore, and a steep connector climbs to the Ridge Trail, which runs from a pine grove to open fields. The Carter Hill Vista Loop climbs through fields to a view of forest and farmland, and the group notes the hill is also used for sledding.
Parking
The main lot is on Bradford Street, and Carter Hill has its own
The Friends' autumn 2025 hike met at the Mazurenko Farm main parking area on Bradford Street, which the event listing gave as 592 Bradford Street, and their trail guide sends Carter Hill walkers to the Carter Hill lot. Neither the town nor the group lists a fee. Because the town's rule is a leash at all times, clip it on inside the car, then walk to the kiosk with your dog on the side away from the road.
Rea's Pond is the place to slow down. It was the first land North Andover bought for conservation and watershed protection, in 1975, and the farm itself was bought in 1988 partly to protect the Lake Cochichewick watershed. The rules keep dogs on the trails, so the pond and the wetland crossing are for looking at, not wading into. Trees felled by beavers on the pond's north side show who else lives there, which is one more reason to keep a curious dog close.

Hunting season
Hunting is allowed here in season: orange from October, Sundays for a quiet walk
Mazurenko Farm and Carter Hill are both on the town's list of parcels where hunting and trapping are permitted, subject to state and local laws, and the town posts signs at those properties during the season. Unlike the Town Forest, neither entry is limited to bows. MassWildlife's 2026 dates put archery deer season at October 5 to November 28, shotgun deer season at November 30 to December 12 and primitive firearms at December 14 to 31, and pheasant season opens October 17.
The town's own advice is to be aware of hunting seasons and wear blaze orange when appropriate. MassWildlife asks walkers to keep pets leashed and visible, with a blaze orange vest or bandana, and reminds everyone that hunting is not permitted on Sundays in Massachusetts. On this land the leash rule already covers half of that advice. Sunday mornings, or a hunt-free reservation such as Weir Hill across town, are the calmer choices from October through December.
- Hunting and trapping permitted in season, with signs posted
- Archery deer season: October 5 to November 28, 2026
- Shotgun deer season: November 30 to December 12, 2026
- Blaze orange on you and on your dog
- No hunting on Sundays
Dogtown
Burrs from the fields and mud from the crossing: a bath and brush in Gloucester
A loop through Mazurenko's fields and across its wet crossing tends to send a dog home with burrs in the feathering and mud to the elbows. A bath and brush at our studio, 210 Eastern Ave in Gloucester, is a warm bath, blow-dry and brush-out, priced by size from $55 to $95. For a long coat that has collected tangles, de-matting is $15 per 20 minutes. Grooming skips the evaluation; book it online or through the Dogtown app.
North Andover is outside the Pup Van towns and about 50 minutes from us outside rush hour, by our estimate, so pair the bath with a daycare day or a trip you were making to Cape Ann anyway. Nail clipping adds $16, and booking the next groom at pick-up saves $5 on it. We do not take dogs to Mazurenko Farm or any North Andover land; the leash, the orange vest and the walk are yours.
