Farnsworth Reservation with your dog: vernal pools in North Andover

Farnsworth is a Greenbelt reservation in the chain of protected land between North Andover's Town Forest and Harold Parker State Forest, and its character is water: Purgatory Swamp, vernal pools and two brooks. This page covers Greenbelt's dog guidance, the 1.3-mile loop and the Bruin Hill side, the roadside parking, and the seasons that change a walk here.

The rule

Greenbelt welcomes dogs here; the leash depends on the posted rules and your dog's manners

Greenbelt's page for Farnsworth lists four activities: birdwatching, dog walking, hiking and winter recreation. Its policies say dogs are welcome on Greenbelt properties except where a property page says otherwise, and the Farnsworth page says nothing otherwise. The conditions are short: carry a leash, leash any aggressive dog, keep noise down, never leave a dog unattended, prevent digging and destructive behavior, and pick up and carry out the waste. All Greenbelt land is open from sunrise to sunset.

Greenbelt's Trail Safety Guidelines, written for all its properties, add the trail manners. Dogs go on the leash wherever it is required, and the posted rules can differ from one property, and one season, to the next. Keep your dog from approaching wildlife, horses, other dogs or people uninvited, and when hikers, riders or bikers come by, recall it, step off the trail and hold it. Bag the waste and take it with you, since a bag left beside the trail is litter. The guidelines even suggest packing a K9 rescue sling when you hike with a dog.

  • Carry a leash, and use it where posted or whenever control slips
  • No uninvited greetings with wildlife, horses, dogs or people
  • Step off the trail and hold your dog while others pass
  • Bag the waste and carry it out
  • Sunrise to sunset only

The trails

A 1.3-mile boardwalk loop from South Bradford Street, and Bruin Hill from Winter Street

Greenbelt rates Farnsworth's 2.7 miles of trail as easy terrain and suggests a pleasant 1.3-mile loop: start at South Bradford Street, cross the boardwalk and continue around the loop trail. Purgatory Swamp, a large red maple swamp, is the heart of the reservation, and Bruin Hill, a wooded upland, has trails reached from Winter Street. The land sits in an intervale between Mosquito Brook and Fish Brook, so expect wet ground in places; the suggested loop begins by crossing a boardwalk.

The trails run through red oak and white pine, past numerous vernal pools and through wooded wetland of alder, red maple and skunk cabbage. Greenbelt's 2022 map shows the North Andover Town Forest on the reservation's western edge, part of the link Greenbelt describes between the Town Farm forest and Harold Parker State Forest. Its guidelines warn that trails often connect to neighboring public and private land, so read the signs at each boundary and keep to the marked trail.

Parking

No lot: park on the shoulder of South Bradford Street or Winter Street

Greenbelt's directions give two places to start, South Bradford Street and Winter Street, and say to park on the shoulder of the road at either one. The property page lists no lot and no fee. Pull fully off the travel lane, clip the leash on inside the car, and let your dog out on the side away from traffic. A full shoulder is a sign to come back later, not to squeeze in.

Choose the side by the walk you want. South Bradford Street is the start of the suggested loop across the boardwalk toward Purgatory Swamp. Winter Street is the way to the Bruin Hill uplands, the higher ground on the property. Farnsworth also borders the North Andover Town Forest, so a longer outing can link the two; on town land, North Andover's open space rules keep dogs leashed at all times and on the trails.

When to go

Vernal pools in spring, and hunting on the land next door in the fall

Spring is the reservation's best season and its most fragile. Greenbelt says to look for salamander and frog activity around the vernal pools, and notes that in drier months a pool may look like nothing more than a hollow in the woods. A dog splashing through a pool in April can disturb whatever is breeding there, so keep it on the trail and on a short leash past the water. Deer are common, and great horned owls may nest in the big white pines.

Autumn brings hunters to the neighbors. North Andover's open space rules allow bow hunting only on the Town Farm and Town Forest next door, and list a town parcel called Bruin Hill, part of Foster Farm off Foster Street, among the places hunting is permitted in season. Greenbelt allows archery deer hunting with written permission on some of its own land. In 2026 the state's archery deer season runs October 5 to November 28. Wear blaze orange, and remember there is no hunting on Sundays in Massachusetts.

  • Spring: keep dogs out of the vernal pools
  • Fall: blaze orange for you and your dog
  • No hunting anywhere in Massachusetts on Sundays
  • Tick check before the drive home

Dogtown

Swamp mud and pine needles come out in a bath at 210 Eastern Ave

A walk past a red maple swamp and a string of vernal pools sends most dogs home with dark legs and a wet belly. A bath and brush at Dogtown, a warm bath, blow-dry and brush-out, runs $55 for a dog up to 25 pounds, $65 to 50 pounds, $75 to 90, $85 over 90 and $95 for an extra-large long coat, with the final price confirmed at check-in after a look at the coat. No evaluation is needed for grooming, so the booking can be made online or in the Dogtown app.

North Andover is about 50 minutes from Gloucester outside rush hour by our estimate, and outside the Pup Van towns, so a bath makes most sense on a day you are coming to Cape Ann anyway, or added to a daycare day for a dog that has passed its free evaluation. Add Shed Release for $10 if your dog is dropping its undercoat, or nail clipping for $16, and book the next groom at pick-up to save $5. We do not take dogs to Farnsworth; the walk is yours.

Asked and answered

Questions people ask about this

Short, complete answers you can act on today. More in the full FAQ.

Are dogs allowed at Farnsworth Reservation?
Yes. Essex County Greenbelt lists dog walking among Farnsworth's activities, and its policies welcome dogs unless a property page says otherwise. Carry a leash and use it where posted, keep your dog under control and away from wildlife, horses and other visitors, and bag and carry out the waste. Like all Greenbelt land, Farnsworth is open from sunrise to sunset.
Where do I park for Farnsworth Reservation?
On the road shoulder. Greenbelt gives two starting points, South Bradford Street and Winter Street, and asks visitors to park on the shoulder at either. South Bradford Street is the start of the suggested 1.3-mile loop across the boardwalk; Winter Street leads to the Bruin Hill trails. Greenbelt lists no lot and no fee.
How long are the trails at Farnsworth Reservation?
Greenbelt lists 2.7 miles of trails over easy terrain on 212 acres, and suggests a 1.3-mile loop that starts at South Bradford Street and crosses a boardwalk. The trails pass Purgatory Swamp, numerous vernal pools and the wooded upland of Bruin Hill. Download the map from Greenbelt's page or use its GreenbeltGo app before you go.
Is there hunting near Farnsworth Reservation?
On neighboring land, yes. North Andover allows bow hunting only on the Town Farm and Town Forest, which borders Farnsworth, and lists its Bruin Hill parcel off Foster Street among the places hunting is permitted in season. Greenbelt allows archery deer hunting with written permission on some of its properties. Wear orange from October, or walk on a Sunday.
Can Dogtown wash my dog after a Farnsworth walk?
Yes. A bath and brush at our Gloucester studio is priced by size from $55 to $95, and grooming needs no evaluation, so book online or in the Dogtown app. North Andover is outside the Pup Van towns, so plan to drive your dog to 210 Eastern Ave yourself or pair the bath with a daycare day.
