Dogs at Nahant Beach and Lynn Shore: the DCR rules

The beach along Lynn Shore Drive and the long strand out to Nahant are one state reservation, not a city or town beach, so the rules come from DCR rather than from Lynn or Nahant. This page sets out DCR's dates, its leash rules, the causeway and promenade, the parking calendar, and what to plan for in the months the sand is off limits.

The rule

No dogs on the beach from April 1 to September 15, by DCR's rule

DCR's page for the reservation lists one dog restriction: no dogs or other pets, with the exception of service animals, on the beach from April 1 to September 15. DCR's statewide guide to dogs explains the dates. It closes its coastal beaches to dogs from May 1 through September 15 unless posted otherwise, and from April 1 where a beach is designated priority nesting habitat for shorebirds, which is the earlier date this reservation uses.

That makes the dog season on this sand roughly mid-September to the end of March. DCR's guide says visitors who do not follow its dog rules may be evicted from the park or fined, but it does not publish a fine amount, so ask the reservation at (781) 595-0063 if you need the figure. Service and medical support animals working in that role are welcome on DCR property even where pets are barred.

  • Beach closed to dogs and other pets: April 1 to September 15
  • Service animals: allowed when working
  • Penalty: eviction or a fine; DCR publishes no amount
  • Reservation phone: (781) 595-0063

The leash

Off season, DCR's statewide rules: ten feet of leash, four dogs and the tags on

Where DCR allows dogs on leash, the leash may be no more than ten feet long, and dogs must be leashed in every parking area. Each walker may bring no more than four dogs at a time unless they hold a special use permit or a commercial dog walking permit, which allows up to eight. The collar should carry current license and rabies tags, and waste goes in a bag and then a bin or home with you.

Lynn Shore and Nahant Beach is not on DCR's list of properties with off-leash areas. In the North Region that list includes Breakheart Reservation in Saugus, at Bark Place, and Harold Parker State Forest, so a dog that needs a run should go there rather than onto this beach. DCR also asks owners not to let a dog approach other dogs or people uninvited, and to keep dogs under effective control at all times.

  • Leash: ten feet at most, and on in every parking area
  • Four dogs per person, unless permitted for more
  • License and rabies tags on the collar
  • No off-leash area at this reservation

The causeway

The causeway and the Lynn Shore Drive promenade: walking room when the beach is closed

The reservation runs from Lynn Shore Drive out along the causeway to Nahant, with its address at 1 Nahant Road, and DCR lists an accessible causeway among its features. The beach restriction on DCR's page covers the beach; it does not address the paved walks separately. On those walks the statewide on-leash rules are the ones that apply, and any sign posted by DCR outranks this page.

DCR keeps dogs out of its buildings, including restrooms and visitor centers, and out of its playgrounds, so the playground, the restrooms and the visitor center are not dog stops. The swimming beach on the Nahant side is called Long Beach on DCR's page. It is a different place from Long Beach on the Gloucester and Rockport line, which has its own page and its own rules.

  • Address: 1 Nahant Road, Nahant; open sunrise to sunset
  • Causeway listed as accessible by DCR
  • No dogs in DCR buildings, restrooms or playgrounds
  • Nahant's Long Beach is not the Gloucester-Rockport Long Beach

Parking and season

Parking costs $10 or $40 at Nahant Beach from May 23 to October 12; Lynn Shore Drive has street parking

DCR charges daily parking at Nahant Beach from 8 AM to 5:30 PM between May 23 and October 12, at $10 for a car with Massachusetts plates and $40 for one without, payable through the YODEL app; residency is read from the plate. Street parking is available along Lynn Shore Drive. A state parks annual pass and a lifetime senior pass for Massachusetts residents are sold through DCR as well.

The two calendars overlap in a way worth knowing. The beach reopens to dogs after September 15, but the parking fee runs to October 12, so the first weeks of the dog season still cost a day fee at the Nahant lot. After October 12 DCR's page lists no daily charge, and the reservation stays open sunrise to sunset all year.

How Dogtown fits

Five and a half closed months, and where a Lynn dog can spend them

From April 1 to September 15 the sand is closed, and the hot months are when a beach dog most needs somewhere to burn energy. Dogtown, at 210 Eastern Ave in Gloucester, runs matched playgroups of 7 to 10 dogs on indoor floors and a turf yard with pools and platforms, at $42 for a full day and $33 for a half day, with five- and ten-day packs that bring the price down.

Lynn and Nahant are outside the Pup Van towns, so ask us about pick-up; our Lynn page covers the drive up Route 1A and Route 128. Dogs start with a free weekday evaluation between 6:30 and 9:30 AM, bringing their town license and Rabies, DHPP and Bordetella records. After a windy off-season walk, a bath at Dogtown starts at $55 for a small dog and needs no evaluation.

Asked and answered

Questions people ask about this

Short, complete answers you can act on today. More in the full FAQ.

Can I bring my dog to Nahant Beach?
Not onto the beach from April 1 to September 15, when DCR bars dogs and other pets other than service animals. The rest of the year a dog may be there on a leash no longer than ten feet, with license and rabies tags on its collar, under DCR's statewide rules. Check DCR's page for posted changes before you go.
Are dogs allowed on the Lynn Shore Drive walkway in summer?
DCR's restriction names the beach, and its page does not address the paved walks separately. On those walks DCR's statewide on-leash rules apply: a leash of ten feet or less, four dogs at most per person, and waste carried out. Posted signs come first, and the reservation office at (781) 595-0063 can confirm.
Is there an off-leash area at Lynn Shore or Nahant Beach?
No. The reservation is not on DCR's list of properties with off-leash areas. In the North Region, DCR allows dogs off leash at Breakheart Reservation in Saugus, at Bark Place, and on the trails of Harold Parker State Forest outside its recreation area and campground, among other listed places.
What is the fine for a dog on Nahant Beach in summer?
DCR's dog guide says visitors who break its dog rules may be evicted from the park or receive a fine, but it does not publish an amount. If you need the figure, ask the reservation at (781) 595-0063. The simpler course is to keep the dog off the sand from April 1 to September 15.
How much is parking at Nahant Beach?
From May 23 to October 12, DCR charges $10 a day for a car with Massachusetts plates and $40 for one without, from 8 AM to 5:30 PM, payable in the YODEL app. Street parking is available along Lynn Shore Drive, and DCR's page lists no daily fee outside those dates.
