Long Beach runs from the Gloucester end near Good Harbor toward Rockport's Cape Hedge, with the town line somewhere under the sand between them. The result is a beach where the rule can change as you walk. This page sets out what each town posts, what a long, straight beach asks of a dog, and how Dogtown covers the closed days on either side.

Two ordinances

One beach, two towns: the Gloucester rule and the Rockport rule

The Gloucester end of Long Beach falls under the city's dog ordinance and beach regulations. Gloucester allows dogs on its public beaches from October 1 to April 30 at the time of writing, and applies an even-date rule at Good Harbor and an odd-date rule at Wingaersheek. Whether Long Beach carries a date rule of its own is a question for the city's beach information page, and we send you there rather than repeat something we cannot vouch for. Take the sign at the Gloucester entrance as the rule for that end.

The Rockport end falls under Rockport's regulations for public beaches and parks. Rockport bans dogs from its public beaches from June 1 to September 15, and outside those dates requires a dog to be on a leash or under the direct voice control of its owner. Rockport's Doggy Do's and Don'ts page and the town's beach regulations PDF, revised in 2025, are the two documents to read. Again, the sign at the Rockport access point is the last word for that half.

In practice the two halves overlap for most of the fall, winter and early spring, when both towns allow dogs, and diverge in May and in the second half of September, when Rockport's side is open to dogs under its rules and Gloucester's is still closed. On any day the towns disagree, keep to the stricter rule. Verified in fall 2026; re-checked each season.

What it asks of your dog

A straight, long beach: distance recall, joggers and a leash at both ends

Long Beach is exactly what its name says: a long, straight run with nowhere for a dog to lose sight of you and nothing to stop it running. That is a gift for a dog with a solid recall and a trap for one without. A dog that gets three hundred yards down the beach has also got itself into the other town's jurisdiction, and possibly a leash requirement. Train the recall before the trip, keep a long line on a young dog, and turn around before the dog is tired enough to stop listening.

In the off-season the beach belongs to walkers, joggers and other dogs. Rockport's rule allows direct voice control instead of a leash, which puts the burden on you: if the dog will not return past another dog or a jogger, it is not under voice control. Salt water and cold sand apply here as at every Cape Ann beach: fresh water in the car, a rinse for the paws, a check for cracks in the pads after a winter walk, and a towel for the belly.

How Dogtown fits

Long Beach dogs come from both sides of the line, and the Pup Van serves both towns at $10 each way. On a day the beach is closed, a full day of daycare at $42 or a half day at $33 puts the dog in a matched group of 7 to 10 on our turf yard at 210 Eastern Ave, a short drive back toward the city.

After the beach, a bath by size starts at $55 and rises to $95 for an extra-large long-haired coat. Grooming needs no evaluation and can be added to a daycare day. For a dog whose recall is not there yet, our trainers run Bright Beginnings for basic obedience and recall and Calm & Connected for adolescents and rescues; sessions start from $94.

Good Harbor is next door on the Gloucester side and runs even dates from October 1 to March 31. Rockport's Cape Hedge and Pebble beaches, and Front and Back Beach, all follow Rockport's June 1 to September 15 ban and the leash or voice control rule; their page on this site explains what Rockport posts and sends you to the town for the rest.

For a leash walk instead of a beach, Halibut Point State Park at the tip of Rockport requires leashes and gives a dog the quarry rim and the ocean edge. Which part of Long Beach is Gloucester and which is Rockport?

The town line crosses the beach, with the Gloucester end toward Good Harbor and the Rockport end toward Cape Hedge. Where exactly it falls is not marked for dog purposes. Read both towns' pages, note which access point you use, and on any day the two rules differ, follow the stricter one for the whole walk. That keeps you and your dog on the right side of both ordinances.

Can I bring my dog to Long Beach in September?

It depends on the end. Rockport's beach ban runs June 1 to September 15, so its side reopens to dogs on September 16 under the leash or voice control rule. Gloucester's beaches stay closed to dogs until October 1. From October 1 both halves are open under their own rules at the time of writing. Confirm on both towns' pages before you go.

Does Long Beach have an odd or even day rule like Good Harbor?

We do not list one here. Gloucester applies an even-date rule at Good Harbor and an odd-date rule at Wingaersheek, and its beach information page is where any rule for the Gloucester end of Long Beach would appear. Rockport's posted rule is the June 1 to September 15 closure and the leash or voice control requirement. Read the city's page and the sign at the entrance.

What does direct voice control mean on the Rockport side?

Rockport allows a dog off leash on its beaches outside the summer ban if it is under the direct voice control of its owner. The plain reading is that your dog returns on one call, every time, past other dogs, birds and people. If that is not true yet, keep the leash on. Rockport's Doggy Do's and Don'ts page carries the town's own wording, which governs.
