Marblehead dog license: fee, deadline and where to get it

Marblehead's figures line up across its own sources: the Town Clerk's page, the 2026 application and section 13-10 of the town bylaws give the same fees and the same January-to-December license year. This page sets out those figures, the February fine, the rabies certificate, the rules for dogs new to the state, and what Dogtown asks for.

Where to apply

The Marblehead Town Clerk issues the license, so start with the clerk's page or a call

Massachusetts places dog licensing in the office of the licensing authority of the town where the dog is kept, and in Marblehead that is the Town Clerk at Abbot Hall, 188 Washington Street. The 2026 application says the office is not licensing dogs in person. Renew online, or mail the form or leave it in the Abbot Hall drop box with a check to the Town of Marblehead and the rabies certificate, and the tag comes back by mail. A new dog cannot be licensed online. Questions go to 781-631-0528 or clerk@marbleheadma.gov.

What you get back is more than a receipt. State law requires the license to come with a tag inscribed with the dog's license number and the name of the town. If that tag goes missing, the owner or keeper must immediately get a substitute from the licensing authority, at a cost the town decides. Fix it to the collar or harness and check the ring now and then, since a tag that falls off cannot do its job.

  • Licensing authority: the Marblehead Town Clerk
  • A numbered tag naming the town comes with the license
  • Lost tag: get a substitute from the clerk at once
  • Online, by mail or at the drop box; new dogs cannot apply online

What you need

Marblehead cannot license a dog without your vet's rabies certificate

Your vet's rabies certificate is the heart of the application. Massachusetts will not let a licensing authority grant a dog license without a veterinarian's certification of rabies vaccination, or a certified exemption. The certificate records you, your dog, the vaccine and the rabies tag number, and the vet hands over a rabies tag with it, which state law expects the owner to secure to the dog's collar or harness.

If your dog is spayed or neutered, enclose the certificate or check with the clerk that one is on file, because without it Marblehead charges the $25 intact fee. Know, too, that license fees are not refunded if a dog dies, is lost, is spayed or neutered later, or leaves Massachusetts, so a dog licensed in spring and moved away in summer has still used its full fee.

  • A current rabies certificate from a licensed veterinarian
  • The rabies tag fastened to the collar or harness
  • A spay or neuter certificate for the $20 fee
  • The fee: $20 altered, $25 intact or without the certificate

Dates and arrivals

Marblehead licenses run January to December, with a monthly fine from February 1; new arrivals license once they live in town

Marblehead's license calendar belongs to Marblehead. Some North Shore towns renew in winter and others in spring, and a family that moves along the coast can easily carry the old town's date in its head. Section 13-10 of the bylaws sets Marblehead's license period at January 1 to December 31, and the 2026 application warns that a $50 fine per dog is assessed every month starting February 1; the bylaw treats each 30 days without a license as a separate offense. Renew in January, and check the rabies certificate at the same time.

Moving to Marblehead with a dog means licensing it with the Town Clerk once it lives in town. If the dog comes from outside Massachusetts and has never had a rabies vaccination, state law allows 30 days from arrival, or until the dog is six months old if that is later, to have it vaccinated. The license follows the vaccination, and the Dogtown evaluation can follow the license.

Asked and answered

Questions people ask about this

Short, complete answers you can act on today. More in the full FAQ.

Where do I get a dog license in Marblehead?
From the Marblehead Town Clerk, the town's licensing authority for dogs. Massachusetts requires licensing in the town where the dog is kept, so a Marblehead address means a Marblehead license. The office at Abbot Hall, 188 Washington Street, takes applications online, by mail or through its drop box rather than at the counter, and a new dog has to apply by mail or drop box.
What if my dog's Marblehead tag gets lost?
State law says the owner or keeper must immediately get a substitute tag from the licensing authority, at a cost the town decides. In Marblehead that means the Town Clerk. Until it arrives, keep the license paperwork handy, because the tag's number is how a found dog is traced back to you.
We just moved to Marblehead from another state. What do we need?
A Marblehead license once the dog lives in town, and that needs a valid rabies certificate. If your dog was never vaccinated against rabies, state law gives you 30 days after arrival, or until six months of age if later, to vaccinate. Then license with the Town Clerk and bring both to a Dogtown evaluation.
Does Dogtown accept a Marblehead license?
Yes. Any current license from the town where your dog lives meets our requirement. A Marblehead dog brings its Marblehead license, plus Rabies, DHPP and Bordetella records, to the free evaluation on a weekday between 6:30 and 9:30 AM. For pick-up from a Marblehead address, ask us, since the Pup Van covers four other towns.
Do I get a refund if my dog dies or we leave Massachusetts?
No. Chapter 140, Section 139 says license fees are not refunded when a dog dies, is lost, is spayed or neutered, is removed from the Commonwealth or is otherwise disposed of. Tell the Town Clerk so the town's records are right, but treat the fee as spent.
