Massachusetts dog vaccination law: rabies is the law, the rest is daycare policy
Owners often ask which shots are the law and which are the daycare's rule, and the honest answer is that the line sits at rabies. This page draws that line, explains why we add two more vaccines for dogs who share a playgroup, and shows where the records go.
The law
Rabies is the vaccine the state requires, and the town license enforces it
Massachusetts requires that dogs be vaccinated against rabies. It is the one vaccine with the force of law behind it, because rabies is fatal, spreads to people, and circulates in the wildlife that Cape Ann dogs meet on every trail. The mechanism that enforces the rule is the town license. Gloucester will not issue a license without a current rabies certificate, and neither will Rockport, Essex or Manchester-by-the-Sea, so the license is the state's rule made local.
Your vet issues the certificate at the time of the shot, with the vaccine's duration written on it. The certificate, not the tag, is the legal proof, and it is the document the City Clerk at 9 Dale Ave asks for in Gloucester at the time of writing, alongside the $20 fee plus $1 for a spayed or neutered dog. Keep a photo of the certificate on your phone.

The policy
DHPP and Bordetella are daycare requirements, and we require both
Nothing in state law obliges a dog to carry distemper, parvovirus or kennel cough protection. The reason nearly every daycare in Massachusetts asks for them anyway is arithmetic. A dog at home meets a handful of dogs a week. A dog in a playgroup of 7 to 10, sharing pools, platforms and water bowls, meets many more, and the illnesses those vaccines cover travel through exactly that kind of contact.
Dogtown requires a dog to be current on Rabies, on DHPP or an equivalent distemper combination, and on Bordetella before it joins a group. The proof is checked at the free evaluation, together with the city license. We do not set the schedule or choose the products; your vet does, based on your dog's age and health. A dog whose records are missing waits for the records.
Puppies deserve a note. A pup's DHPP series runs over several visits, and rabies comes toward the end of it, so the evaluation can only happen once your vet says the series is complete. Ask your vet for that date, book the evaluation for the first weekday morning after it, and use the weeks before for the careful, one-dog-at-a-time socialization our puppy guide describes.

Grooming
Grooming needs no evaluation, because a grooming dog never joins a group
Grooming is the exception to all of the above. A dog in the grooming studio works one-on-one with a groomer and never enters a playgroup, so we do not run an evaluation for grooming and you can book a bath or a full-service groom online or in the app straight away. Baths start at $55 for a dog up to 25 pounds and full service at $75.
If your dog is due for a bath and for daycare in the same week, the two can be booked together; grooming during a daycare day or before an overnight pick-up is routine. The daycare half of that booking still needs the records on file. Cat grooming in our quiet studio works the same way: no evaluation from us, and the low-stress groom is booked directly.
The records
Where the paperwork goes and how to keep it current
Bring the records to the evaluation, on paper or on your phone. Weekday evaluations run between 6:30 and 9:30 AM by appointment at 210 Eastern Ave, and the paperwork takes a few minutes of that morning. After that, records expire on their own schedules: rabies on the date printed on the certificate, DHPP and Bordetella on the schedule your vet sets, and the license every spring, by April 30 in Gloucester and from April 1 in Manchester-by-the-Sea.
When something renews, send the new certificate to the front desk through the Dogtown app or bring it to drop-off. A lapsed record does not make your dog unwelcome, but daycare pauses until the new certificate arrives, and nobody wants to learn that at 6:30 on a Monday. A photo of each certificate in a phone album, named by expiry month, ends the problem for good.

Why it matters here
Cape Ann's wildlife and the pools on the turf are the two reasons
The rabies rule is written for places like Cape Ann. Dogs here run Dogtown Common, Ravenswood Park and the off-season beaches, all of them shared with wildlife, and a dog with a current vaccination who meets a sick animal is protected where an unvaccinated dog is not. The state's requirement and the town's license check are the same safeguard seen from two ends.
The daycare policy is written for the turf yard. Pools in July, shared water bowls, ten dogs wrestling on the platforms: it is joyful, and it is close contact. Bordetella and the DHPP group cover the illnesses that pass through that contact most readily. Requiring them of every dog is what lets us run small, matched groups all year without treating a cough as a crisis.
