Ipswich dog license: fee, deadline and where to get it
Ipswich runs its dog licenses on the calendar year and charges for lateness by the month, so a renewal that slips past March keeps costing more. Here are the office, the paperwork, the dates and the fees as the Town Clerk's dog page and registration form showed them in October 2026, and why the license matters to us.
Where to apply
Apply to the Ipswich Town Clerk online, by mail or at 25 Green Street
The Town Clerk's office at Ipswich Town Hall, 25 Green Street, registers every dog in town, and it offers three routes. You can license online through the town's dog licensing portal on City Hall Systems, mail the completed registration form with a check payable to the Town of Ipswich, or register in person at the clerk's counter. Massachusetts places licensing with the city or town where a dog is kept, so an Ipswich address means an Ipswich license, whichever route you pick.
Mail goes to Town Clerk, 25 Green St., Ipswich, MA 01938. The form carries a blunt warning: incomplete applications are returned, and any late fee that applies is still assessed, so a missing certificate can cost you a month. For questions before you post anything, the form lists the Town Clerk's office at 978-356-6677. The clerk posts special hours around elections, so check the town page before a counter visit in the autumn.

What you need
Enclose a current rabies certificate and proof of spay or neuter every time
The Ipswich form asks for two documents with every registration, new dog or renewal: a current rabies certificate and proof that the dog has been spayed or neutered. The second one matters even when the clerk has licensed your dog before, because the lower fee rests on it. Behind the first is state law: a dog must be vaccinated against rabies by a licensed veterinarian by six months of age, then revaccinated at the intervals the vaccine maker recommends.
Look at the expiry date on the certificate before you fill in a single line. A certificate that ran out in February cannot license a dog in March, and a booster appointment can take a week or two to get. If your vet has certified that your dog should not be vaccinated for a medical reason, Massachusetts allows an exemption with the local board of health's approval; ask the Town Clerk how Ipswich wants that paperwork well before March 31.
- The completed Ipswich dog registration form
- A current rabies certificate from your vet
- Proof of spay or neuter, for the lower fee
- Payment online, or a check for the right amount
Dates and fees
Renew between January 1 and March 31, or pay $10 for every month late
Ipswich registrations are valid January 1 to December 31, and the town bylaw printed on the form asks owners to license between January 1 and March 31 each year. Miss that window and the fee grows by $10 for each month or part of a month after March 31. Because part of a month counts as a whole one, an application dated April 2 already owes $10 on top of the license. The March 31 date does not apply to a dog you acquire later in the year; license that dog once it joins the household.
Owners aged 70 and over pay a reduced fee for one dog per household: $10 for an intact dog and $5 for a spayed or neutered one, with any other dogs at the full rate. Owners of more than four dogs are told to contact the Town Clerk's office, since state law treats that many dogs as a kennel. The form also cites Ollie's Law, Chapter 213 of the Acts of 2024. Treat every figure here as the town's at the time of writing, and confirm it each January.
| Ipswich license | Fee at the time of writing | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Spayed or neutered dog | $15 | Proof of surgery enclosed |
| Intact dog | $20 | Same paperwork, higher fee |
| Owner 70 or over, spayed or neutered dog | $5 | One reduced license per household |
| Owner 70 or over, intact dog | $10 | One reduced license per household |
| Renewal after March 31 | $10 a month | Each month or part of a month |
Why we ask
Dogtown needs the current Ipswich license before your dog joins a playgroup
Every dog who comes to Dogtown for daycare, Dogtown Academy, an overnight stay or an at-home walk starts with a free evaluation, and the license is part of that first morning's paperwork. We look for a current town license and for Rabies, DHPP and Bordetella records. An Ipswich dog brings its Ipswich license; we never ask a family from another town to license in Gloucester. Evaluations run on weekdays between 6:30 and 9:30 AM, by appointment, at 210 Eastern Ave.
The license does two jobs for us. It confirms, through the clerk, that a current rabies vaccination stands behind it, which protects every dog in a matched group of 7 to 10. And it puts a numbered tag on the collar that names Ipswich, so a dog that slipped its harness can be traced through the Town Clerk. Grooming is the one service with no evaluation, so a bath from $55 can go on the calendar while the license paperwork is in the mail.
- Free evaluation on weekdays, 6:30 to 9:30 AM, by appointment
- Bring the Ipswich license with Rabies, DHPP and Bordetella records
- Ipswich is outside the Pup Van towns; ask us about pick-up
- FIRST15 takes 15 percent off a new customer's first daycare visit
Step by step
License by mail in five steps and arrive at the evaluation with nothing missing
The mail route suits owners who would rather not stand at a counter, and it works best in January, well ahead of the March line. The online portal skips the envelope altogether. Whichever you use, photograph the receipt or the license as soon as you have it, and keep it with the rabies certificate on your phone, because those two documents answer most questions at our front desk.
If a renewal has already slipped past March 31, send it now rather than waiting. The town charges for each month or part of one, so the bill only grows, and your dog still needs a current license before it can start at Dogtown. The same goes for a dog that moved to Ipswich mid-year: once it lives in town, license it with the Ipswich clerk.
