Hamilton dog license: fee, deadline and where to get it

Hamilton gives owners a cushion of two months after the license year begins, then charges late fees in two steps. Here is how to apply, what to send, how the June and August dates work, and why your Hamilton license is part of the first morning at Dogtown.

Where to apply

License through the Hamilton Town Clerk online, by mail to PO Box 429 or in person

The Hamilton Town Clerk issues dog licenses three ways. Online registration runs through City Hall Systems, reached from the Pay Bills & Order Documents button on the town website, and takes a credit card or e-check; the license and tag are mailed to you. By mail, the 2026 application goes to PO Box 429, Hamilton, MA 01936, with a check payable to the Town of Hamilton and the word dog in the memo line. At the clerk's counter, as by mail, the town takes checks only.

Where to find the clerk changed this year. In October 2026 the Clerk's page said the office was moving back to Town Hall, 577 Bay Road, from the Patton Homestead on Monday, October 5, and it asks residents to call 978-468-5570, extension 3, to confirm availability and book an appointment. The dog page adds a tip for the online route: call that same number before you register, so the clerk can make sure the online system does not charge a late fee by mistake.

  • Online: City Hall Systems, by credit card or e-check
  • By mail: PO Box 429, Hamilton, MA 01936, check only
  • In person: the Clerk's office, check only, by appointment
  • Call first: 978-468-5570, extension 3

What you need

Send proof of rabies vaccination on paper, or upload it with spay or neuter proof online

Every Hamilton license needs proof of a current rabies vaccination before the clerk will issue it. On paper, the certificate travels with the application and the town sends it back with your license and tag, so you are not giving up your only copy. Online, the system asks you to upload the rabies certificate and proof of spay or neuter. Save a scan or a clear phone photo of each document before you start, so you can finish in one sitting.

The 2026 form also asks for your dog's veterinary clinic, its date of birth, breed and colors, and whether it is spayed or neutered, with room for four dogs. Use the same form to tell the clerk about a dog registered last year that has since died or moved out of Hamilton, which keeps the town's records straight. Households with more than four dogs need a kennel license instead, and the form asks those owners to call the Town Clerk's office for details.

  • Proof of current rabies vaccination, returned with the tag
  • Proof of spay or neuter when you register online
  • Clinic name, date of birth, breed and colors for each dog
  • A kennel license instead if you keep more than four dogs

Dates and late fees

The license year starts April 1; late fees arrive June 1 and rise August 1

Massachusetts requires every dog six months or older to be licensed in the town where it lives, and Hamilton's licensing period runs April 1 to March 31. The town does not charge a penalty the moment April begins. Under the 2026 application, a renewal sent on or after June 1 owes the license fee plus a $25 late fee, and one sent on or after August 1 owes the fee plus $50. From August on, a forgotten renewal costs more than three times the license itself.

The late fees apply to renewals, not to dogs licensed for the first time. The town's dog page says new dogs licensed after June are not subject to a late fee, and the form repeats that late fees do not apply to a new, first-time registration. A puppy that reaches six months in July, or a rescue that comes home in September, is licensed at the standard $15 or $20 and runs to the following March 31 like every other Hamilton license.

Why we ask

A current Hamilton license is part of your dog's first morning at Dogtown

Dogtown's free evaluation is the starting point for daycare, Dogtown Academy, overnight stays and at-home walks, and the front desk asks for the town license that morning, along with Rabies, DHPP and Bordetella records. Evaluations are held on weekdays between 6:30 and 9:30 AM by appointment at 210 Eastern Ave in Gloucester. A Hamilton license is the right one for a Hamilton dog; nobody needs a second license from another town to come to us.

We ask because the license is an independent check on the rabies vaccination that every dog in a matched group of 7 to 10 relies on, and because the tag ties a loose dog to its owner through Town Hall. Hamilton's license form reminds owners that the town has a leash law requiring control of the dog at all times, and asks them to clean up waste. Hamilton is outside the four Pup Van towns, so ask us about pick-up.

Questions people ask about this

Short, complete answers you can act on today. More in the full FAQ.

How much does a Hamilton dog license cost?
$15 for a spayed or neutered dog and $20 for an intact dog, on the town's 2026 application. A resident aged 70 or older as of January 1 pays no fee for the first dog. Late renewals add $25 from June 1 and $50 from August 1, though a dog registered for the very first time is never charged a late fee.
Can I license my dog online in Hamilton?
Yes, through City Hall Systems, reached from the Pay Bills & Order Documents button on the town website. You pay by credit card or e-check and upload the rabies certificate and proof of spay or neuter. The town asks you to call the Clerk's office at 978-468-5570, extension 3, when registering online, so the system does not add a late fee in error.
Where is the Hamilton Town Clerk's office?
In October 2026 the Clerk's page said the office was returning to Town Hall, 577 Bay Road, from the Patton Homestead on October 5. It asks residents to call 978-468-5570, extension 3, to confirm availability and book an appointment before coming in. Mailed applications always go to PO Box 429, Hamilton, MA 01936.
Does Dogtown need my Hamilton license?
Yes. Our evaluation paperwork includes a current license from the town where your dog lives, together with Rabies, DHPP and Bordetella records. Bring them to the free evaluation on a weekday morning. Grooming is the exception: there is no evaluation, so a bath or a full groom can be booked online or in the Dogtown app straight away.
My dog arrived in Hamilton in July. Is there a late fee?
No. Hamilton's late fees apply to renewals, and the town states that new dogs licensed for the first time after June are not subject to a late fee. Pay the standard $15 or $20, send proof of rabies vaccination, and the license runs to March 31, when every Hamilton license ends.
