Danvers dog license: fee, deadline and where to get it

Danvers is in the middle of a calendar change. The fee is settled in the town bylaw, but licenses move from spring renewals to the calendar year in January 2027, and the town has not yet published a due date or late charge to go with the switch. Here is what the town confirms, what to ask the Town Clerk, and what Dogtown checks.

Where to apply

Apply to the Danvers Town Clerk, the licensing authority for every dog kept in Danvers

Chapter 140, Section 137 of the Massachusetts General Laws says licensing is done in the office of the licensing authority in the city or town where the dog is kept, which in Danvers means the Town Clerk. A dog that lives in Danvers is licensed there, even if it was adopted, bought or licensed before somewhere else. Applications go through the town's online portal; if you pay by cash or check instead, the application waits until the payment reaches the Clerk's Office at 1 Sylvan Street, Danvers, MA 01923, marked with your application number.

Do not borrow a figure from a neighbor's notice, since a number on a Beverly or Peabody form tells you nothing about Danvers. Chapter XXI of the Danvers bylaws, revised through May 2026, sets the fee at $20 for a spayed or neutered dog and $25 for an intact one, and the clerk's online application and the January 2026 notice give the same two figures. Dog questions go to dogs@danversma.gov or to Town Hall on 978-777-0001.

  • Fee: $20 spayed or neutered, with documentation; $25 intact
  • From January 2027: a calendar-year license, January to December
  • Due date and late charge for 2027: not yet published, so ask the clerk
  • Online with the rabies certificate uploaded, or pay by mailed check

What you need

Bring your vet's rabies certificate, because no Danvers license is granted without it

State law forbids a licensing authority to grant a dog license unless the owner provides a veterinarian's certification of rabies vaccination, or a certificate that the dog is exempt. That makes the rabies certificate the one document every Danvers application needs, whatever else the Town Clerk asks for. Massachusetts requires the first rabies vaccination by six months of age and boosters at the intervals the vaccine maker recommends, so check the expiry date before you apply.

The exemption is narrow. A vet must certify that vaccination is inadvisable for a set period because of an infirmity, another physical condition or a course of therapy, and the exemption runs through the local board of health. If that applies to your dog, ask the Town Clerk how Danvers handles it well before the renewal date, and raise it with us before you book an evaluation, since rabies vaccination is one of the records Dogtown requires.

  • A current rabies certificate from a licensed veterinarian
  • Or a vet's exemption certificate, approved through the board of health
  • Proof of spay or neuter if the rabies certificate does not show it
  • The fee, online or by check to the Town of Danvers

Dates and fees

Danvers licenses switch to the calendar year in 2027, and no due date or late charge has been published yet

Massachusetts has no single statewide renewal date, and Danvers is changing its own. The Town Clerk's notice of January 28, 2026 says that, to keep in compliance with Ollie's Law, licenses will follow the calendar year from January 2027 instead of renewing in spring, with 2027 registration opening in November and December 2026. Neither that notice, the bylaw nor the clerk's portal names a due date or a late charge for the new calendar, so we print neither. Ask the Town Clerk, then set a reminder next to your dog's rabies booster.

What state law does fix is the shape of the fee. Under Chapter 140, Section 139, the town decides the amount, but the license for a spayed or neutered dog must cost less than the license for an intact dog, and a service animal is licensed free. A town may also waive the fee for a dog owned by someone aged 70 or over, but only if it has accepted that provision, so ask the clerk whether Danvers has.

Why we ask

Dogtown asks a Danvers dog for its current town license at the free evaluation

Before daycare, Dogtown Academy, an overnight stay or an at-home walk, every dog has a free evaluation at 210 Eastern Ave in Gloucester, on a weekday between 6:30 and 9:30 AM by appointment. The front desk checks a current license from your own town and the Rabies, DHPP and Bordetella records. For a Danvers dog that means the Danvers license; we never ask a Danvers family to license anywhere else.

The license shows us that a town official has seen a current rabies certificate, which matters for every dog in a matched playgroup of 7 to 10. It also puts a numbered tag on the collar that leads back to Danvers if a dog ever gets loose. Danvers sits outside the four Pup Van towns, so drive Route 128 north to its end in Gloucester, or ask us about pick-up.

Asked and answered

Questions people ask about this

Short, complete answers you can act on today. More in the full FAQ.

How much is a dog license in Danvers, MA?
$20 for a spayed or neutered dog, with documentation, and $25 for an intact dog. Chapter XXI of the town bylaws, revised through May 2026, sets those figures, and the Town Clerk's online application and January 2026 notice repeat them. State law adds that a service animal is licensed with no fee.
When is the Danvers dog license due?
Danvers has not published one for the new calendar. The Town Clerk's January 2026 notice says licenses follow the calendar year from January 2027 and that 2027 registration opens in November and December 2026, but it names no due date or late charge, and the bylaw does not either. Ask the clerk at dogs@danversma.gov or 978-777-0001, and register once the window opens.
Do I need a Danvers license if my dog was licensed in another town?
Yes, once the dog lives in Danvers. Massachusetts requires a dog over six months old to be licensed with the licensing authority of the town where it is kept. Take your vet's current rabies certificate to the Danvers Town Clerk and license the dog there; the tag from your old town belongs to that town's records.
Does Dogtown accept a Danvers license?
Yes. We ask for a current license from the town where your dog lives, so a Danvers dog brings its Danvers license, with Rabies, DHPP and Bordetella records, to the free evaluation. Danvers is outside the Pup Van towns of Gloucester, Rockport, Essex and Manchester-by-the-Sea, so ask us about pick-up.
Are owners over 70 exempt from the Danvers license fee?
Massachusetts lets a town license dogs owned by people aged 70 or over without a fee, but only if the town has accepted that part of the law. We could not confirm whether Danvers has, so ask the Town Clerk when you renew. Service animals are licensed free everywhere in the state.
