Cost of owning a dog in Massachusetts: a Cape Ann budget

We could not find a Massachusetts average for the cost of owning a dog from any state agency, and national averages leave out the line that moves a Cape Ann budget most. This page prices that line from our own price list, shows every sum, and sources each figure that is not ours.

The numbers

Four Cape Ann households spend $892 to $9,529 a year on dog services

The table prices a year for four common household patterns, using only the rates on our pricing page and a Gloucester license for an altered dog at $22: the $20 fee plus the $2 processing fee. The lightest is an owner who works from home with a short-coated medium dog, booking four baths, four nail trims and one week away. The heaviest is a household where both adults commute five days a week with a large dog.

Between them sit the hybrid worker whose doodle comes to daycare twice a week, and the owner of a small senior dog who swaps playgroups for three 30-minute walks a week. Each column is arithmetic, not an estimate, and the working sits in the cells so you can swap in your own numbers. Food, vet visits, vaccines and preventives are left out on purpose because we do not sell them; the sections below say where to find those figures.

Set by law

The license and the rabies vaccine are the two costs Massachusetts law makes you pay

State law requires every dog six months or older to be vaccinated against rabies by a licensed veterinarian and revaccinated at the interval the vaccine's maker recommends; chapter 140, section 145B sets a fine of up to $100 for skipping it. Gloucester, Rockport and Ipswich each ask for a current rabies certificate with the license, and we ask to see both before a dog joins daycare, the Academy, an overnight stay or a walk. Your vet sets the vaccine price, so ask when you book.

Gloucester's license is $20 for a spayed or neutered dog and $25 for an intact one, plus a $2 processing fee each, under section 4-25 of the city code and on the city's 2026 application. It is due by April 30, and a $20 late fee starts on May 1. Renewals can be done online; new licenses go by mail or the City Hall drop box. The city updated its fee ordinance in June 2025, so check the licensing page before you pay.

  • Gloucester: $20 altered or $25 intact, plus $2 each; due April 30
  • Manchester-by-the-Sea: $20, or $25 if not neutered; $10 a month late, up to $30
  • Essex: $15 spayed or neutered, $24 intact; a $15 fine after March 31
  • Ipswich: $15 spayed or neutered, $20 intact; $10 for each month late after March 31

What moves it

Care while you are out moves the total more than anything else on the list

Daycare, walks and overnight stays are where households differ most, and how you buy matters as much as how many days you need. One full day a week for 50 weeks costs $2,100 at the single-day price of $42, or $1,900 on five 10-packs at $380, which saves $200 for buying ahead. The membership pays off past a set point: $700 divided by the 10-pack rate of $38 is 18.4, so a dog here more than 18 days a month is cheaper on the membership.

Travel adds up by the night. A week in an overnight suite is 7 × $78, or $546. The Dogtown Classic bundle adds $10 a night and takes 10 percent off grooming; the Dogtown Deluxe adds $15 a night and takes 15 percent off. The Pup Van costs $10 each way in Rockport, Gloucester, Essex and Manchester-by-the-Sea, so using it at both ends of 100 daycare days adds $2,000 to a year.

  • One daycare day a week for 50 weeks: $2,100 in singles, $1,900 on 10-packs
  • Membership break-even: more than 18 days a month at the $38 pack rate
  • Each night away: $78, or $88 with the Classic and $93 with the Deluxe
  • Pup Van at both ends of a daycare day: $20

Cape Ann

Cape Ann adds a summer line, a tick line and a town line to a dog budget

Summer is the expensive season for a Cape Ann dog, because the beaches close. At the time of writing Gloucester shuts Good Harbor to dogs from April 1 to September 30 and Wingaersheek, Plum Cove, Cressy's and most other public beaches from May 1 to September 30, and Rockport shuts its public beaches from June 1 to September 15. A dog that ran the sand all spring may need another play day. One extra full day a week for the 17 weeks from June through September costs 17 × $38, or $646.

Ticks are the line you pay your vet for. Tick season here runs from April to November, and the CDC's tick pages cover prevention; the ASPCA's 2021 national figure for heartworm, flea and tick preventives is $185 a year, but your vet's price is the one that counts. The town line matters too: licenses differ by town, and the Pup Van serves only Gloucester, Rockport, Essex and Manchester-by-the-Sea, so from Ipswich or Beverly ask us about pick-up before you budget it.

Your year

Price your own year in six lines, using the same arithmetic as the table

Start from your week rather than from an average. Count the days you are out of the house and the nights you are away, decide whether your dog suits a playgroup or a walk, and then work down the lines. The free evaluation, on a weekday between 6:30 and 9:30 AM, settles that question before you buy a pack, and new customers take 15 percent off the first daycare visit with the code FIRST15.

Then add the costs that are not ours. The ASPCA's 2021 national figures put a dog's yearly food, routine vet care, preventives, insurance, toys, treats, license, supplies and a day of boarding at $1,391, and a first year at $3,221 once spaying or neutering, first vaccines and equipment are counted. They are national numbers from 2021, not Massachusetts quotes, so treat them as a starting comparison and replace each line with your own vet's and store's prices.

Asked and answered

Questions people ask about this

Short, complete answers you can act on today. More in the full FAQ.

How much does it cost to own a dog in Massachusetts each year?
We could not find a Massachusetts figure from a state agency. The ASPCA's national 2021 numbers are $1,391 a year for the basics and $3,221 for a first year. On Cape Ann, services decide the rest: from our published prices, four example household patterns would cost between $892 and $9,529 a year on daycare, walks, grooming and overnight stays.
How much is a dog license in Gloucester, MA?
On the city's 2026 application it is $20 for a spayed or neutered dog and $25 for an intact dog, plus a $2 processing fee per dog. Licenses are due by April 30, and a $20 late fee applies from May 1. Renew online, or send a new application by mail or the City Hall drop box with a current rabies certificate.
When is the unlimited daycare membership cheaper than packs?
When your dog comes more than about 18 days a month. The membership is $700 a month and the full-day 10-pack works out at $38 a day, and 700 divided by 38 is 18.4. A dog in five weekdays averages about 21.7 days a month across a year, which would cost about $823 a month on 10-packs.
Which Dogtown discounts lower a year's total?
Packs bring daycare from $42 to $38 a day, and walk packs lower the price of every walk. Members take 15 percent off grooming, the Classic overnight bundle 10 percent and the Deluxe 15 percent. Rebooking a groom at pick-up saves $5 on the next one, and FIRST15 takes 15 percent off a new customer's first daycare visit.
What does this budget leave out?
Food, vet care, vaccines, preventives, insurance and supplies, because we do not sell them; ask your vet, and use the ASPCA figures only as a comparison. Training is left out too: sessions start from $94 and programs are quoted after a short assessment, so the total depends on the plan made for your dog.
