Moving to Cape Ann with a dog: licenses, vets, beaches and daycare

Moving is hard on a dog before it is good for one: the boxes, the new smells, the yard that is not fenced yet. This is the Cape Ann paperwork and geography in the order that makes the first month easier, from a team that meets a lot of newly arrived dogs.

The license

License first: each Cape Ann town has its own clerk, fee and deadline

Massachusetts dogs are licensed by the town, so a license from Somerville or Stamford does not follow you here. In Gloucester you license at the City Clerk's office at 9 Dale Ave with a current rabies certificate; at the time of writing the fee is $20 for a spayed or neutered dog plus a one-dollar fee, the deadline is April 30, and renewing late carries a $20 penalty. Manchester-by-the-Sea runs April 1 to March 31 at $20, or $25 if the dog is not neutered.

Rockport and Essex license through their own town offices and publish their rules online. Do this in the first week, not the first spring: the license is what animal control uses to get a loose dog home, and it is on the short list of what we need before a dog starts daycare. Bring the rabies certificate; it is the one document every town asks for.

The beaches

The beach calendar runs on dates, odd and even days and a plover closure

New arrivals assume the beach is always there. Gloucester's beaches are open to dogs from October 1 to April 30 at the time of writing, with a twist: Good Harbor takes dogs on even-numbered days only and closes to them from April 1 for nesting piping plovers, while Wingaersheek takes them on odd-numbered days. From May 1 to September 30 no Gloucester beach takes a dog.

Rockport's beaches close to dogs from June 1 to September 15, Singing Beach in Manchester opens to licensed, vaccinated dogs from mid-October to mid-April with a walk-on fee, and Essex closes its beaches for the summer; the beach calendar page carries each town's source and exact dates. In summer the walking is on Dogtown Common, at Ravenswood Park and on a leash at Halibut Point.

  • Gloucester: October 1 to April 30, Good Harbor even days, Wingaersheek odd days
  • Rockport: closed to dogs June 1 to September 15
  • Summer: Dogtown Common, Ravenswood, Halibut Point on a leash, and the fenced dog park at Stage Fort

The vet

Register with a vet before you need one, and know where the 24-hour hospital is

The City of Gloucester publishes a list of local veterinary offices and emergency contacts, and it is the place to start rather than a search engine. Call two or three, ask whether they are taking new patients and how they handle after-hours calls, and have your old vet send the records ahead. The nearest 24-hour emergency hospital at the time of writing is Massachusetts Veterinary Referral Hospital in Woburn, down Route 128; save its address the week you arrive.

While you are there, ask about tick prevention. Tick season on Cape Ann runs April to November, and the woods your dog will love most, Dogtown Common and Ravenswood above all, are where the ticks live. The vets and emergency care page on this site goes further into who is open at which hour and what to keep in the car.

The first month

The first month with a dog on Cape Ann, in six steps

Do the paperwork in week one, walk the neighborhood in week two, and start daycare when the dog is sleeping normally again. A dog that has just lost its old house does not need a playgroup on day three; it needs its people, its bed and a predictable walk. This is the order we suggest to families who arrive mid-year with a dog in the back seat.

The Pup Van runs in Rockport, Gloucester, Essex and Manchester-by-the-Sea for $10 each way, which helps in the weeks before you have learned the back way to Eastern Ave. If you have landed in Ipswich, Beverly or beyond, ask us for pricing rather than assuming the van does not reach you; outside the four towns we quote by request.

How Dogtown fits

Daycare once the dog has settled, walks while you unpack, and a bath after the move

Our free evaluation runs on weekdays between 6:30 and 9:30 AM by appointment: a temperament test with one of our handlers, then a few supervised hours in a group of 7 to 10 dogs matched by size and temperament. We ask for Rabies, DHPP and Bordetella on file and the new town license, which is why the license comes first here. The code FIRST15 takes 15 percent off a new customer's first daycare visit.

For the weeks when the house is chaos, a solo walk from home by our staff, from $25 for 20 minutes with a photo and a note afterward, keeps the routine without asking the dog to meet twenty strangers. Availability depends on the address, so ask whether we cover yours. A bath, from $55 for a dog up to 25 pounds, needs no evaluation and can be booked online the day you arrive.

The moving guide, the license pages and the beach calendar

The moving house guide covers the two weeks either side of the move itself: the crate, the car, the first night and the walks that anchor a dog in a new place. The Gloucester dog license page has the City Clerk details in full, and the Manchester-by-the-Sea page carries that town's April 1 renewal. Bookmark the beach calendar; you will check it more than any other page.

The Gloucester service-area page shows how Magnolia, Lanesville, Annisquam and downtown fit the Pup Van route, and the summer visitors page is the one to send the friends who come in July with their dog. The commuting guide is for the day you realize your new job is on the Rockport line, and the trails pages are for the first free Saturday.

Asked and answered

Questions people ask about this

Short, complete answers you can act on today. More in the full FAQ.

Does my dog need a Gloucester license before it can start daycare?
Yes. We ask for a current city dog license along with Rabies, DHPP and Bordetella records at the evaluation. In Gloucester it comes from the City Clerk at 9 Dale Ave with a rabies certificate, $20 for a spayed or neutered dog plus a one-dollar fee at the time of writing.
We moved in the fall. When is the Gloucester license due?
License the dog when you arrive; the Gloucester license year ends April 30 and renewing after that date carries a $20 penalty. Ask the clerk at 9 Dale Ave about the fee for a partial year and whether your old town's license counts for anything; those details are the city's to set.
Which vet should I use on Cape Ann?
Start with the City of Gloucester's published list of local veterinary offices and emergency contacts, and call a few to ask about new patients and after-hours cover. We do not recommend one practice over another. For anything that cannot wait for morning, the 24-hour hospital at the time of writing is in Woburn.
Can my dog start daycare the week we move in?
You can book the evaluation as soon as the license is done, but we would rather see the dog once it is eating and sleeping normally in the new house, usually a few weeks in. A solo walk from home, from $25, covers the workday until then, and a bath from $55 needs no evaluation.
