Monthly cost

Dog daycare cost per month in Gloucester: packs, membership and the math

We sell daycare by the day, by the 5-pack and 10-pack, and by the month, so no monthly figure is printed anywhere; it has to be worked out. This page does that arithmetic in the open, using only the prices on our pricing page, for the weekly patterns Cape Ann households actually keep.

The numbers

A four-week month runs from $160 at one day a week to $700 at five or six

A four-week month at one full day a week costs $160 on a 5-pack, and the top of the range is the $700 unlimited membership, which covers Monday through Saturday. Everything in between is days multiplied by the per-day rate of the pack you would sensibly buy. Those rates come straight from the published prices: a single full day is $42 and a single half day $33; a full-day 5-pack is $200, or $40 a day; a full-day 10-pack is $380, or $38; a half-day 5-pack is $150, or $30; and a half-day 10-pack is $290, or $29.

We count a month as four weeks because that is how most people picture it, but a calendar month runs longer. A year has 52 weeks, and 52 divided by 12 is about 4.33, so a dog booked two days every week averages roughly 8.7 days a month across the year rather than 8. If you budget by calendar month, add a third of a week to any pack figure in the table: two full days a week then averages about $329, which is 8.67 days at $38. The membership is the one line that does not stretch, because it is $700 whatever the month's length.

What changes the bill

The Pup Van adds the most: $20 a day for a round trip

Transport is the largest addition to most monthly bills. The Pup Van collects and returns dogs for $10 each way in Rockport, Gloucester, Essex and Manchester-by-the-Sea, so a round trip is $20 and a one-way ride is $10. On a two-day week the van at both ends adds 8 × $20, or $160, to four weeks, which turns $304 into $464. Use it only for the morning collection, pick your dog up yourself in the 4 to 6:30 PM window, and the addition halves to $80. Outside those four towns, ask us for a price before you budget.

Half days pull the bill the other way. On the 10-packs a half day is $29 and a full day $38, so turning one full day a week into a half day saves 4 × $9, or $36, over four weeks. Enrichment pushes it back up a little: a frozen Kong or homemade pupsicle is $6, a puzzle game or the sniff room $7, a lick mat $5 and a treadmill session $10. One $6 add-on on every visit of a two-day week adds $48. The membership includes two enrichment sessions a month, so members pay for add-ons only after the second.

  • Pup Van: $10 one way or $20 a round trip, in the four Pup Van towns
  • Half day instead of a full day: $9 less on the 10-packs
  • A $6 add-on on every visit of a two-day week: $48 more
  • FIRST15 on a first full day: $35.70 instead of $42

By household

Match the purchase to the household's week and the right one is usually obvious

The five-day commuter household belongs on the membership. When both adults leave for Boston before 7 AM and get home after 6, the dog is here every weekday, which is 20 to 23 days a month. Even the shortest of those months costs $760 at the 10-pack rate, against the membership's flat $700. Add the Pup Van for the morning collection and four weeks come to $900; with the van at both ends, $1,100. That larger figure is the honest monthly cost for a family with nobody driving past Eastern Ave.

The hybrid worker with two office days and three at home pays $304 for two full days on the 10-pack. Many add a half day on the heaviest work-from-home day so the afternoon calls are quiet, which takes the four-week total to $420. A puppy or a senior on three half days a week is a half-day 10-pack household at $348, and should stay there until the dog's stamina says otherwise. The shift worker whose days move week to week does best on 5-packs: eight scattered full days cost $320 at $40, slightly more than the 10-pack but with less money paid in advance.

  • Five weekdays or more: the $700 membership, plus the van if nobody drives
  • Two office days: the full-day 10-pack, $304 for four weeks
  • Puppies and seniors on three half days: $348 on the half-day 10-pack
  • Shifting schedules: 5-packs, so less sits unused on account

Your own month

Work out your own month in six lines of arithmetic

You can price any week in a couple of minutes, and the steps below are the same ones behind every figure on this page. The only judgment call is the per-day rate: use the 10-pack rate if your dog comes at least twice a week, because a 10-pack is then used up in about five weeks, and the 5-pack rate if attendance is irregular. Then set the full-day total against $700 before you buy anything, and read the unlimited daycare membership page if the two are close.

Check the result against the dog, not only the budget. A dog who comes home frantic after a full day needs a shorter one, whatever the arithmetic says. A dog still bouncing at 9 PM may need a structured day rather than another play day; a Dogtown Academy day is $89 full or $69 half, with a training session included, and it belongs in the sum if you add one to the week.

Cape Ann seasons

Summer beach closures and the commuter rail push Cape Ann daycare bills up

Summer is the expensive season here, because the free exercise disappears. At the time of writing, Gloucester closes Good Harbor to dogs from April 1 to September 30 and Wingaersheek, Plum Cove and Cressy's from May 1 to September 30, and Rockport keeps dogs off its public beaches from June 1 to September 15. A dog who ran the sand at dawn in March often needs another daycare day by July. Going from two days a week to three adds 4 × $38, or $152, to four weeks, so budget a summer month and a winter month separately.

The train sets the floor for commuters. The MBTA's rider rules keep large dogs off the commuter rail at weekday peak hours, so a dog cannot ride the Rockport line into Boston with its owner on a working morning, and the realistic choices are daycare, a midday walk or a long day alone. Saturdays are the other local variable: they draw from the same packs as weekdays and are included in the membership, which matters to anyone who works Saturdays through the summer.

  • Gloucester beaches closed to dogs from April 1 or May 1 to September 30
  • Rockport beaches closed to dogs from June 1 to September 15
  • A third summer day adds $152 to a four-week month
  • No large dogs on the commuter rail at weekday peak hours

Asked and answered

Questions people ask about this

Short, complete answers you can act on today. More in the full FAQ.

How much is dog daycare a month if my dog comes every weekday?
At Dogtown it is $700 on the unlimited daycare membership. A four-week month of weekdays is 20 days, which would cost $760 at the 10-pack rate of $38, and longer months cost more. The membership also covers Saturdays, includes two enrichment sessions a month and takes 15 percent off grooming. The Pup Van is not included; it is $10 each way.
Is there a cheaper monthly option for half days?
There is no separate half-day membership; the half-day 10-pack is the cheapest route, at $290 for ten, or $29 a session. Two half days a week cost $232 for four weeks and three cost $348. A dog would need more than 24 half days in a month before the $700 membership costs less, so half-day dogs almost always stay on packs.
What will the first month cost for a new dog?
Start with the free evaluation on a weekday morning between 6:30 and 9:30 AM. A first full day booked with FIRST15 then costs $35.70. A full-day 5-pack at $200 covers the next five days, so a new two-day-a-week dog spends $235.70 on six days across the first three weeks, then moves to the 10-pack once the routine holds.
Do daycare packs expire?
Pack validity terms are not published here, so ask the front desk before you buy. We do not restate them here because they are set at purchase. If your dog comes once a week or less, read them before choosing a 10-pack over a 5-pack, and ask the front desk if anything is unclear.
