Board and train for Wenham, MA dog owners

Wenham is near enough to Gloucester that the choice between a stay and a day program is a real one for its families. Here is when a stay makes more sense, how the drive works, two Greenbelt properties for practice once your dog is home, and the Wenham licensing facts we check.

Why a stay

A stay in Gloucester suits Wenham families who want the skills built first and the driving kept short

A board and train fits a Wenham household when the problem is clear and the calendar is full. Your dog lives at Dogtown for one or two weeks, trains every day with our team, joins a playgroup when it is ready, and you come back for the handover. Foundation, the one-week program, covers basic obedience and leash skills, place, stay and recall, impulse control, and crate and household manners. Advanced, two weeks, adds distraction proofing, real-world outings, neutrality, confidence building and structured socialization.

Because Wenham is close, a day option is realistic too. Canine Campus trains your dog by day and sends it home each night for two, four or six weeks, with homework every evening. A stay concentrates the work into a few trips; Campus spreads it out and keeps you practicing alongside. Gabriella Pope, our Director of Training & Canine Behaviorist, helps you choose at the training consult, once she has heard what you want to change.

  • Foundation, 1 week: manners, leash skills, place, stay and recall
  • Advanced, 2 weeks: distraction proofing, outings and neutrality
  • Both programs: a daily update and go-home coaching
  • Canine Campus: day training for 2 to 6 weeks, home every night

The drive

Drive south on Route 1A to Route 128 north, and Eastern Ave is about 25 minutes from Wenham

Head south on Route 1A into Beverly, pick up Route 128 north, and stay on it through Manchester-by-the-Sea until the highway ends in Gloucester. Eastern Avenue carries on from there, and number 210 sits on that stretch toward Rockport. Allow about 25 minutes outside rush hour, by our estimate, and more on a weekday evening when 128 slows. Expect a few round trips over the whole program: the assessment and the evaluation, the drop-off, and the pick-up with its coaching.

The Pup Van does not run to Wenham. Its $10 each-way service covers Rockport, Gloucester, Essex and Manchester-by-the-Sea, so Wenham is outside the Pup Van towns; ask us about pick-up when you first get in touch. Most Wenham families simply drive. Drop-off works best inside a window: weekdays 6:30 to 9:30 AM, 12 to 1 PM or 4 to 6:30 PM, and Saturdays 8 to 10 AM, 12 to 1 PM or 4 to 6 PM. The free evaluation runs on weekday mornings between 6:30 and 9:30, by appointment.

Practice at home

Nickerson Knoll and Dodge Farm, two Greenbelt properties in Wenham, list dog walking

Essex County Greenbelt lists dog walking at two Wenham properties. Nickerson Knoll, opposite 82 Cedar Street, has about half a mile of trail, and you park on the side of the road. Dodge Farm on Porter Street covers 3 acres with a very short accessible path rated easy, plus two small lots of 3 and 10 spaces. Greenbelt asks owners to carry a leash, leash any aggressive dog, keep noise under control, pick up and carry out waste, and never leave a dog unattended.

Use the two in order of difficulty. The Dodge Farm path is short enough for a first outing in the days after pick-up: a few minutes of loose-leash walking, a sit at the edge of the lot, then back to the car while it is still going well. Nickerson Knoll suits the next stage, a longer walk with a recall on a long line and a settle beside you when you stop. Change one thing at a time, distance, distraction or duration, and drop back a step whenever the place is new.

Two Wenham places are not for this practice. The posted rules for Pleasant Pond Beach, revised May 12, 2026, say no pets are allowed on the beach. Mass Audubon's Cedar Pond Wildlife Sanctuary on Cherry Street prohibits dog walking altogether and asks visitors to leave pets at home, with service animals welcome. Save those outings for a day without the dog, and keep the training walks on land where the manager lists dogs.

Wenham rules

A Wenham license costs $15 or $20 a year, and owners aged 70 and over pay nothing

The Town Clerk at Wenham Town Hall, 138 Main Street, licenses every dog six months and older, and the town requires those dogs to be vaccinated against rabies. A Wenham license is valid from January through December. The fee is $15 for a spayed or neutered dog and $20 for an intact dog, and residents aged 70 and over pay nothing. Registration information arrives with the annual census at the end of December or in early January. Pay online by card or e-check at any hour, or by mail, in person or at the drop box with a check or cash.

Wenham's dog registration page does not state a town leash rule, so we do not print one here. Ask the Town Clerk what applies on town land, and follow whatever each property posts. A household with more than three dogs needs a personal kennel license, $50 for four dogs plus the per-dog fee. For the evaluation at Dogtown we ask for the license from the town where your dog lives, which for you means the current Wenham tag, with Rabies, DHPP and Bordetella records.

  • $15 spayed or neutered, $20 intact, free for residents 70 and over
  • License year: January through December
  • Town Clerk, Wenham Town Hall, 138 Main Street
  • More than three dogs: a personal kennel license

After pick-up

After pick-up, Wenham's short drive makes Canine Campus a realistic next step

Foundation ends with one go-home lesson and Advanced includes two scheduled coaching lessons. In each, you take the leash while the trainer watches your timing, your cues and your rewards, and you leave with an order of places to practice. The lessons are held at Dogtown, so build the Route 128 drive into the plan and bring everyone in the household who walks the dog. Gabby sets the dates at the consult, before the stay begins.

If something slips once your dog is home, private sessions start from $94, booked through the training team, who answer the form within one hour on business days. Canine Campus is the longer follow-on, and from Wenham it is within reach: day training for two, four or six weeks, your dog home each night, a daily report and homework every evening. Campus includes pick-up and drop-off, so ask whether that reaches your Wenham address before you plan around it.

Asked and answered

Questions people ask about this

Short, complete answers you can act on today. More in the full FAQ.

Is Wenham on the Pup Van's route?
No. The Pup Van runs at $10 each way in Rockport, Gloucester, Essex and Manchester-by-the-Sea, and Wenham is outside the Pup Van towns. Ask us about pick-up when you send the training form. Otherwise plan to drive Route 1A and Route 128, about 25 minutes outside rush hour, by our estimate, for drop-off and pick-up.
How much is a board and train for a Wenham dog?
We quote each stay after a short assessment rather than printing a package price, the same way we quote every training program. Training sessions start from $94. Foundation runs one week and Advanced two, and both include nights at Dogtown, daily training, a daily update and go-home coaching. Because Wenham is outside the Pup Van towns, ask about pick-up pricing separately.
Can my dog swim at Pleasant Pond to practice recall?
No. The town's rules for Pleasant Pond Beach, revised May 12, 2026, say no pets are allowed on the beach. For recall practice after a stay, use a long line on a Greenbelt property that lists dog walking, such as Nickerson Knoll opposite 82 Cedar Street, and keep the leash with you, as Greenbelt asks.
Which Wenham license does Dogtown need to see?
The current one from the Wenham Town Clerk at 138 Main Street. Wenham licenses run January through December, so a dog evaluated in the fall will need its renewal soon after, and a current license is what we keep on file. Bring the license to the free evaluation with Rabies, DHPP and Bordetella records.
Is Canine Campus a better fit than a stay for a Wenham family?
It can be, when you can manage regular trips or our pick-up reaches your street. Campus runs 2, 4 or 6 weeks of day training with your dog home each night and homework every evening, so you learn alongside it. A stay suits a family that wants the skills built in one or two weeks with fewer drives. Gabriella Pope recommends one at the consult.
