Board and train for Danvers, MA dog owners
Danvers dogs have a fenced dog park inside Endicott Park and a rail trail running from the Peabody line to Wenham, and both reward a dog with good manners. This page explains how a stay in Gloucester builds those manners, how a Danvers family gets to us, and where to practice in town afterward.
- Getting to Eastern Ave
- Route 128 north to its end in Gloucester, then Eastern Avenue: about 30 minutes outside rush hour, by our estimate
- The Pup Van
- No. Danvers is outside the Pup Van towns; ask us about pick-up
- Dog licensing
- Danvers Town Clerk, 978-777-0001: $20 spayed or neutered, $25 intact, with a vet's rabies certificate; calendar-year licenses from January 2027, no due date or late charge published yet, so confirm with the clerk (danversma.gov)
- The beach rule
- Endicott Park: leashed everywhere except inside the Danvers Dog Park, 57 Forest Street, open 9 AM to dusk; fines of $25 to $100 (danversma.gov)
- A trail we know
- Danvers Rail Trail: 4.3 miles from the Peabody line toward Wenham, dawn to dusk, under the town-owned land rules (friendsofdanversrailtrail.org)

Why Gloucester
A stay suits Danvers families when dog-park and rail-trail manners need building quickly
Endicott Park and the Danvers Rail Trail ask a lot of a young dog: a leash everywhere outside the fenced dog park, and walkers, runners and other dogs passing close on the path. A board and train builds the skills those outings lean on. Foundation spends one week on basic obedience and leash skills, place, stay and recall, impulse control, and crate and household manners. Advanced spends two weeks adding distraction proofing, neutrality around dogs and people, confidence building and real-world outings.
The stay also suits a Danvers household whose evenings are already spoken for. Your dog sleeps at Dogtown, trains every day with our team, joins a playgroup matched by size and temperament once it is ready, and you read a daily update in the Dogtown app. Gabriella Pope, Director of Training & Canine Behaviorist, leads the programs, which are fear- and force-free and built on positive reinforcement. No prong, choke or shock collar is used at any stage, at Dogtown or in the coaching you take home.
The drive
One highway does it from Danvers: Route 128 north to its end, about 30 minutes
Every Danvers route ends up on Route 128 north. Follow it past Beverly and Manchester-by-the-Sea, across the Annisquam River in Gloucester, stay on until the highway ends, and continue a short way along Eastern Avenue to our door. That is about 30 minutes outside rush hour, by our estimate, and slower in the evening commute or on a summer Friday. A morning drop-off usually beats the afternoon traffic, and the weekday morning window runs from 6:30 to 9:30.
Danvers is outside the Pup Van towns; ask us about pick-up. The van's $10 each-way price applies only in Rockport, Gloucester, Essex and Manchester-by-the-Sea, so most Danvers families drive for the visits a stay involves. The order below is the usual path from first message to the day you bring your dog home, and the training team will tell you where your dog's plan differs from it.

Practice in Danvers
Endicott Park and the Danvers Rail Trail give a graduate two very different places to practice
The town's answer for Endicott Park on Forest Street is a leash everywhere except inside the designated dog park, with fines of $25 to $100 under the town bylaws. The Danvers Dog Park itself, at 57 Forest Street, is open 9 AM to dusk, and the town suggests the Dean Street entrance off Forest Street, across from St. Richard's Church. Dogs must be licensed with proof of current rabies vaccination; puppies under four months and dogs in heat stay out, each handler brings two dogs at most and must be 18 or older, children under 12 are not permitted, and dogs over 25 pounds keep out of the small-dog enclosure.
The Danvers Rail Trail runs 4.3 miles north to south and connects to Peabody in the south and Wenham in the north. It is open dawn to dusk and follows the same rules as other town-owned land, set out in section XXV.3 of the town bylaws. Its Friends group says pet waste is the number one complaint from trail users, and three pet waste stations are planned. A straight, level path is a fair test of loose-leash walking and calm passing, once the basics hold at home.
| Place | The rule, as the town or trail group states it | What to practice there |
|---|---|---|
| Endicott Park paths | Leash everywhere except inside the dog park; fines of $25 to $100 | Loose-leash walking, a sit before greetings, a settle on a mat |
| Danvers Dog Park, 57 Forest Street | 9 AM to dusk; licensed, four months or older, two dogs per handler | A leashed entry and exit, a recall out of play |
| Danvers Rail Trail | Dawn to dusk; town-owned land rules; pick up after your dog | Calm passing and a steady pace over distance |
Danvers rules
The Danvers Town Clerk licenses dogs at $20 or $25, and the 2027 due date is a question for the clerk
State law requires the owner of a dog over six months old to license it in the city or town where it is kept, which makes the Danvers Town Clerk the licensing authority for a Danvers dog. No license is granted until you provide a veterinarian's proof of vaccination or of an exemption, which in practice means the rabies certificate. The clerk's office answers dog questions at 978-777-0001, and renewals go through the town's Dog License Application.
The town bylaw and the clerk's online application agree on the fee: $20 for a spayed or neutered dog and $25 for an intact one. Licenses switch to the calendar year in January 2027, with 2027 registration in November and December 2026, but no due date or late charge has been published for the new calendar, so ask the clerk before you rely on one. Dogtown checks a current Danvers license with the Rabies, DHPP and Bordetella records at the free evaluation, before any stay is booked, so a renewal that is due soon is worth doing first.
- Licensed by the Danvers Town Clerk, 978-777-0001
- A vet's rabies certificate before any license is granted
- Endicott Park: leashed everywhere but the dog park
- Fee $20 or $25; 2027 due date: confirm with the clerk
After the stay
Read the daily updates before the handover, then take the skills to Endicott one step at a time
The handover is where a Danvers family takes over. Foundation includes one go-home lesson and Advanced two scheduled coaching lessons, held at Dogtown in Gloucester: you watch the trainer run each skill, then take the leash yourself and get feedback on timing and rewards. Read back through the daily updates the night before and note which skill wobbled, so the lesson spends its time where you need it most.
After that, the practice is yours, starting in the kitchen and moving out to Endicott and the rail trail over the following weeks. If a skill fades, private sessions start from $94. Canine Campus, two to six weeks of day training with nights at home, fits a dog that needs many more days of real-world practice; it includes pick-up and drop-off, so ask whether your Danvers street is covered before you plan on it.
- Foundation: one go-home lesson at Dogtown
- Advanced: two scheduled coaching lessons
- Private sessions from $94
- Canine Campus: 2, 4 or 6 weeks, home every night
