Board and train vs a behavior consultation

The two are often weighed as alternatives. They are really two steps in a sequence, and the question is whether your dog's case is simple enough to go from a short assessment straight to a stay, or whether it needs a fuller look first.

Side by side

A consultation decides what is wrong and what to do; board and train is one of the things it can recommend

There are two kinds of consultation to know about. A trainer's behavior consultation, which at Dogtown is the assessment with Gabriella Pope, Director of Training & Canine Behaviorist, looks at what the dog does, when and why, and matches it to a program. A veterinary behavior consultation with a board-certified veterinary behaviorist adds medical diagnosis and medication, which no trainer can offer. At Tufts University's animal behavior clinic, for example, the first consult runs one and a half to two hours and aims to reach a diagnosis.

Board and train is a program. Foundation runs one week for puppies, young dogs and foundational manners; Advanced runs two weeks for adolescents who need real-world reliability. Both are written after the assessment and quoted then, with sessions starting from $94. A stay can change skills quickly, but it cannot diagnose anything, and it is the wrong first step for a dog whose problem nobody has yet understood.

Consult first

A consultation should come first whenever the problem is a feeling, a bite or a change you cannot explain

Some cases should never go straight to a booking. A bite with pressure, growling at family members, guarding of food or furniture, fear of people or places, reactivity toward dogs, panic when left alone, and any behavior that appeared suddenly in an adult dog all need someone to work out the cause before anyone writes a plan. Skills programs, board and train included, assume the dog is healthy and that the problem is missing manners.

Medical causes are the reason for the vet visit. The ASPCA points out that physical problems can cause or worsen behavior problems and that only licensed veterinarians can diagnose medical conditions. AVSAB's 2021 statement adds that medication may be needed for serious problems such as fear, aggression, separation anxiety, noise phobia or compulsive disorders, and that those dogs should always be evaluated by a veterinarian.

  • Any bite with pressure, or any bite to a child
  • Growling or guarding around food, toys or furniture
  • Fear, reactivity or panic when left alone
  • A sudden change in an adult or senior dog
  • Signs of pain: limping, flinching, snapping when touched

The sequence

The order that saves money runs from the vet to the consultation to the program, not the other way round

Run in order, each step narrows the next. The vet rules pain and illness in or out. The consultation names the problem and picks a route. Only then does a program make sense, whether that is a stay, an owner-present program or a medication plan with training alongside. Booking a stay first and discovering a sore hip or a fear problem halfway through costs money and some of the dog's goodwill.

A veterinary behavior clinic asks for preparation. Tufts, for example, asks for a completed questionnaire and full medical records from your family vet before it finalizes an appointment, welcomes video of the behavior with a warning not to provoke it for the camera, and offers email and phone support for four months after the visit. A trainer's assessment is lighter, but the same habits, records, video and an honest timeline, make it far more useful.

  1. 01

See your vet if pain, illness or a sudden change could be involved

  2. 02

Ask your vet whether a veterinary behaviorist referral is warranted

  3. 03

Send Dogtown's training form with the full history, including any bites

  4. 04

Attend the assessment with video, vet notes and a written timeline

  5. 05

Start the management steps from the assessment straight away

  6. 06

Begin the program it recommends: a stay, an owner-present program or private sessions

Cost

A consultation costs less than the wrong program, and that is the comparison that matters

We do not publish a price for the assessment, so ask when you enquire. Board and train is quoted after it, like every Dogtown program, and training sessions start from $94; veterinary behavior consultations are priced by each clinic. The point of comparing them is not which costs less on the day. A stay booked for a dog whose real problem is fear can leave you with a bill, a stressed dog and the same behavior, while a consultation steers that money toward a program that can change it.

Time follows the same logic. An owner-present program for reactivity runs longer than a stay, 8 weeks and 16 sessions for React Less, Relax More or 10 weeks and 20 for Polished Pup, but it is aimed at the right target. For a plain manners case the assessment is short and the stay follows quickly, so the consultation adds days rather than weeks to the timeline.

Straight to a stay

A healthy, social dog with a manners problem can go from a short assessment straight to board and train

Not every dog needs a long consultation. A young dog that pulls, jumps and ignores recall, but eats well, sleeps well, likes people and copes with other dogs, has a skills gap, and the short assessment that opens every Dogtown stay is enough to choose between Foundation and Advanced. The free evaluation on a weekday morning between 6:30 and 9:30 then shows how the dog handles a group, with Rabies, DHPP and Bordetella on file and a current dog license.

Cape Ann has the support a behavior case can need. Gloucester publishes a list of local emergency veterinary offices, and Massachusetts Veterinary Referral Hospital in Woburn runs a 24-hour emergency service if a bite or a scuffle leads to an injury. Gabriella Pope's own background includes ten-plus years with behaviorally complex dogs and fostering through Cape Ann Animal Aid. Once a stay is booked, families in Rockport, Gloucester, Essex and Manchester-by-the-Sea can use the Pup Van at $10 each way.

  • Consultation first: feelings, bites, guarding, sudden change
  • Vet first: pain, illness or questions about medication

Questions people ask about this

Short, complete answers you can act on today. More in the full FAQ.

Is Dogtown's assessment the same as a behavior consultation?
It is the trainer's version: Gabriella Pope takes the history, watches your dog and recommends a program and level. It is not a veterinary consultation, so it does not diagnose medical conditions or prescribe medication. Where those may be needed, she will ask you to involve your vet or a board-certified veterinary behaviorist.
Do I need a veterinary behaviorist?
Consider one if your dog has bitten, if the behavior appeared suddenly or is getting worse, or if anxiety may need medication. Your own vet is the place to start and can refer you. Training can run alongside a veterinary behaviorist's plan, so you do not have to choose one or the other.
Can I book board and train without a consultation?
Every Dogtown board and train begins with a short assessment, so there is always a consultation of a kind. For a healthy, social dog with manners to learn, that is all it needs. For bites, fear or reactivity, the assessment may recommend something other than a stay, and we would rather tell you before you book.
How much does a behavior consultation cost?
Ask when you enquire; we do not publish a price for the assessment. Training sessions start from $94, and the program the assessment recommends, board and train included, is quoted at that point. Veterinary behavior clinics set their own fees, so ask them directly when you book.
What happens if the consultation points to pain?
Training waits until your vet has looked at it. A dog that hurts can growl, snap or ignore cues for reasons no program can fix, and behavior often changes once the pain is treated. Bring the vet's notes back to the assessment, and the plan is written for the dog you have then.
