Summer stays

Summer board and train

Many families think about board and train in summer, when trips are booked and the days are long. Summer on Cape Ann also brings heat, crowds and closed beaches, and each of those shapes a training stay. Here is how, and what we confirm with you before the dates are set.

Heat

On hot days, training moves to the cooler hours and indoors, and the blocks get shorter

The AVMA's warm-weather advice is to limit exercise on hot days, keep it to early morning or evening when the heat is high, and remember that asphalt can burn paws. Flat-faced breeds have more trouble cooling themselves, and older, overweight and heart- or lung-compromised dogs need extra care. A training block works the body as well as the brain, so the same rules apply to it. We do not publish a fixed heat protocol; the plan for your dog's stay sets it, and Gabby explains it at the consult.

In practice, heat changes when and where the work happens rather than whether it happens. Leash and recall work on the turf yard fits the early hours. Place, stay, impulse control and crate manners suit the indoor play floors in the afternoon. The yard's pools and shaded platforms give a warm dog somewhere to cool off between blocks, and a dog that is panting hard gets rest, not another repetition. Ask how the plan changes if your dog is a short-nosed breed.

  • Early morning and evening for outdoor blocks
  • Indoor play floors for the midday work
  • Shade, water and the pools between blocks
  • Extra care for flat-faced, older and heavy dogs

Closed beaches

Cape Ann's public beaches are closed to dogs in summer, so summer outings happen away from the sand

At the time of writing, Gloucester keeps dogs off Good Harbor from April 1 and off Wingaersheek, Plum Cove, Cressy's and its other public beaches from May 1, through September 30; Crab Beach is the exception, open to dogs off leash all year under the city's conditions. Rockport bars dogs from its beaches from June 1 to September 15, and Essex closes its beaches and Centennial Grove to dogs in June, July and August. Check each town's page before you go, because rules change.

Advanced includes real-world outings, and which settings your dog visits is set in its plan rather than promised in advance. Whatever the plan, a summer outing cannot be on these beaches. Summer streets are a harder test in any case: downtown Gloucester during St. Peter's Fiesta in late June, the crowds for the July 3 fireworks and Rockport's harbor in high season are a lot for a dog still learning neutrality. Practice there comes later, at your pace, once the go-home lessons have shown you how.

Booking a summer stay

Summer brings seasonal residents and family travel, so start the enquiry before you book your own trip

Summer on Cape Ann brings seasonal residents and visitors, and it is also when many local families travel. Board and train dates are set around trainer time and the go-home lessons, not just an empty suite, so we confirm availability when you enquire rather than publishing a lead time. The earlier you send the training form, the more choice of dates you have, and the easier it is to put the go-home lesson on a day when you are back and free.

Seasonal residents need the same paperwork as everyone else: Rabies, DHPP and Bordetella on file and a current dog license from your home town. The free evaluation runs on weekday mornings between 6:30 and 9:30 AM, so if you arrive for the summer on a weekend, book it for the first weekday you can. The Pup Van serves Rockport, Gloucester, Essex and Manchester-by-the-Sea for $10 each way, and Sunday overnight windows run 8 to 10 AM and 4 to 6 PM.

Ticks and noise

Summer also means ticks and fireworks, and both belong in the plan

Ticks are active on Cape Ann from about April to November, and summer is the height of it. Tell us at the consult which tick preventive your dog takes and when the next dose is due; how medications are handled during a stay is confirmed there. A full-body tick check needs a dog that accepts handling from nose to tail, which is a skill worth practicing in short blocks during a stay if you ask for it, and one that pays off every day of a Cape Ann summer.

Noise is the other summer factor. Gloucester's fireworks are on July 3, St. Peter's Fiesta fills late June with music and crowds, and the Schooner Festival takes Labor Day weekend. If a stay spans one of those nights, tell us how your dog reacts to fireworks; the AVMA's advice is a quiet indoor space and familiar comforts. For a dog that is truly frightened of bangs, timing the stay away from those dates may be the kindest choice of all.

  • Tick preventive named, and its next dose noted
  • Nose-to-tail tick checks practiced in short blocks
  • Fiesta in late June and fireworks on July 3
  • The Schooner Festival on Labor Day weekend

Other summer options

Some summer needs are met better by an overnight stay or Canine Campus than by board and train

If you simply need care while you travel, an overnight suite is $78 a night, with playgroups by day and 24/7 monitoring, and the Classic bundle at $10 a night or the Deluxe at $15 adds treats, enrichment and a grooming discount. Board and train makes sense when you want the time used for training and you can attend the go-home lesson afterward. If you are on Cape Ann all summer and want training without nights away, Canine Campus runs 2, 4 or 6 weeks with your dog home every evening.

Dogs with significant reactivity, fear or separation distress are not helped by a summer stay squeezed between trips; they need weeks of owner-present work. Ask about React Less, Relax More or private sessions, from $94 a session. Whatever you choose, outdoor practice after a summer stay moves into early mornings and shaded routes until October, when Gloucester's beaches open to dogs again.

Asked and answered

Questions people ask about this

Short, complete answers you can act on today. More in the full FAQ.

How far ahead should I book summer board and train?
We do not publish a lead time, because it depends on trainer time and on fitting the go-home lessons around your return. We confirm open dates when you send the training form, and the team replies within one hour on business days. The earlier you ask, the more dates there are to choose from.
Will my dog train outside in the heat?
We follow the AVMA's warm-weather advice; how your dog's outdoor blocks are timed in a heat wave is set in its plan and explained at the consult. Tell us at the consult if your dog is flat-faced, older or heavy, and ask how the plan adjusts for it.
Can my dog go to the beach during a summer stay?
Gloucester, Rockport and Essex close their public beaches to dogs for the summer, under each town's rules at the time of writing, with Gloucester's Crab Beach the exception. Outings in the Advanced stay are set in your dog's plan, and beach practice can begin in October, when Good Harbor and Wingaersheek reopen to dogs.
We are summer residents. What paperwork do you need?
The same as for every dog: Rabies, DHPP and Bordetella records, a current dog license from your home town and the free evaluation on a weekday between 6:30 and 9:30 AM. If you arrive at a weekend, book the evaluation for the first weekday you can, and send the training form before you travel.
Can I add a groom before pick-up in summer?
Yes. Grooming happens in our own studio at 210 Eastern Ave, and it needs no evaluation. A bath starts at $55 for a dog up to 25 pounds and a full service groom at $75, and Shed Release is a $10 add-on for heavy summer shedders. Book it with the stay and plan pick-up for after the groom, so the go-home lesson starts with a clean dog.
