Board and train for Somerville, MA dog owners

Somerville's dog rules are written for a busy city: a leash everywhere except a short list of off-leash areas, and leash-only dog-friendly parks and paths. A dog that can walk calmly past bikes, strollers and other dogs is the goal. Here is what the hour's drive to Gloucester buys, the trip itself, two places to practice, the city's license and leash rules, and what follows the stay.

Why a stay

For a Somerville dog, the case for a stay an hour away is calm in company, practiced every day

City walking asks a dog to stay neutral: past other dogs on the sidewalk, past bikes on the Community Path, past people who would rather not be greeted. The Advanced program, two weeks, is built for that kind of reliability, with distraction proofing, real-world outings, neutrality, confidence building and structured socialization on top of the Foundation work. Foundation, one week, suits puppies and young dogs that need the basics first: leash skills, place, stay, recall, impulse control and crate manners.

The honest cost is distance. Dogtown is about an hour from Somerville, so the stay works best for families who would rather make a few drives than many. What the drive buys is daily training with one named trainer, Gabriella Pope, inside a full day at our building, where your dog spends time with a playgroup of 7 to 10 dogs matched by size and temperament. You hear from us every day of the stay, and the training uses positive reinforcement, never force.

  • Neutrality and distraction proofing in Advanced
  • Daily sessions with Gabriella Pope
  • Playgroup time matched by size and temperament
  • Quoted after a short assessment; sessions from $94

Getting here

Somerville to Eastern Ave is about 60 minutes by Interstate 93 and Route 128, and the T only partly helps

Plan on about 60 minutes outside rush hour, by our estimate. From Davis Square or Union Square, make for Interstate 93 north and follow it to Interstate 95, which also carries the Route 128 name, then drive north. In Peabody, keep right where Route 128 leaves 95 for Gloucester, stay on it to the end, and turn left on Eastern Avenue; 210 is about a mile toward Rockport.

Somerville is outside the Pup Van towns; ask us about pick-up. Families without a car can reach Gloucester on the Commuter Rail's Rockport branch, but read the MBTA's rider rules first: a larger dog that does not fit in a carrier may ride only off-peak and on a leash, riders are asked to avoid bringing pets on holidays and at large events, and staff can restrict access in crowds. The station is a few miles from our building, so you would still need a ride for the last stretch.

  • I-93 north, I-95 north, then Route 128 to its end
  • About 60 minutes outside rush hour, by our estimate
  • Pup Van: Somerville is outside its four towns
  • MBTA: larger dogs off-peak only, leashed, at staff discretion

Practice spots

Practice off leash in Nunziato Field's posted area, and on a leash along the Community Path

Nunziato Field, at Summer Street and Putnam Street, is one of the city's posted Off-Leash Recreational Areas, alongside Edward L. Leathers Community Park on Walnut Street, the Zero New Washington Dog Park and the Lincoln Park Dog Park at 25 Perry Street. The rules are the same at each: leashed on the way in and out, a leash in hand at all times, your dog in view and under physical or vocal control, a limit of three dogs per person, dogs at least four months old, and no access from 10 PM to 8 AM.

The Community Path is one of ten parks the city lists as dog friendly, along with Nathan Tufts (Powder House) Park and Prospect Hill Park, and every one requires a leash at all times. That makes the path a neutrality lesson on a leash: step to the side when bikes pass, ask for a look, and pay your dog for staying with you. DCR's Draw Seven State Park, nine acres on the Mystic River with paved trails, is another leashed option the state lists as dog friendly.

City rules

Somerville keeps dogs leashed everywhere but posted off-leash areas and licenses them through December 31

City Ordinance 3-34 requires every dog to be leashed at all times within the city except in posted Off-Leash Recreational Areas. Licensing runs through the City Clerk's Office at City Hall, 93 Highland Avenue, for every dog six months or older; a license can be bought at any time, is valid through December 31, and is renewed each January. The mail-in application lists $20 for a spayed or neutered dog, with evidence, and $30 for an intact dog, and an unlicensed dog can bring a $50 fine.

Apply online, at the clerk's counter, which is open until 7 PM on Thursdays, or by mail with the rabies certificate, spay or neuter evidence and a stamped return envelope. An owner of more than four dogs needs a kennel license instead. The city says license fees help fund its off-leash areas and dog-friendly parks, and each off-leash area asks for a collar carrying a valid license. Bring the Somerville license to Dogtown with your dog's Rabies, DHPP and Bordetella records.

After the stay

After the stay, the coaching is at Dogtown and the Community Path becomes the first test

The stay closes with coaching for your household at Dogtown: one go-home lesson after Foundation and two scheduled coaching lessons with Advanced. The trainer runs each skill with your dog, then hands it over to you and refines your timing. Since the lessons are in Gloucester, set their dates before drop-off and bring everyone who walks the dog, so the cues sound the same from every hand on the leash.

When something slips at home, private sessions start from $94. Canine Campus, day training for 2, 4 or 6 weeks with your dog sleeping at home, includes pick-up and drop-off, but ask whether that pick-up reaches Somerville before you plan on it; otherwise it means a daily drive. Dogtown Academy, $89 a full day or $69 a half, adds a training session with our trainer to a day of play.

Asked and answered

Questions people ask about this

Short, complete answers you can act on today. More in the full FAQ.

Can my dog go off leash anywhere in Somerville after the stay?
Only in the posted Off-Leash Recreational Areas, such as Nunziato Field and the Leathers Park, Zero New Washington and Lincoln Park dog parks, and never between 10 PM and 8 AM. Everywhere else, including the Community Path and the dog-friendly parks, City Ordinance 3-34 keeps dogs on a leash.
Can we bring our dog to Gloucester on the Commuter Rail?
The Rockport branch reaches Gloucester, but the MBTA's rider rules allow a larger dog that does not fit in a carrier only off-peak and on a leash, and staff may restrict pets in crowds. The station is a few miles from our building, so arrange a ride for the last stretch, or drive: about 60 minutes outside rush hour, by our estimate.
Is Somerville on the Pup Van route?
No. Somerville is outside the Pup Van towns, so ask us about pick-up rather than counting on it. The van's $10 each-way fare is published for Rockport, Gloucester, Essex and Manchester-by-the-Sea. Plan to come yourself on the last day, since the coaching that ends the stay takes place at Dogtown.
What does a Somerville dog license cost?
The city's mail-in application lists $20 for a spayed or neutered dog, with evidence, and $30 for an intact dog. Licenses run through December 31, are renewed each January, and can be bought online, in person at City Hall, 93 Highland Avenue, or by mail. An unlicensed dog can bring a $50 fine.
Why would a Somerville family choose a stay over weekly classes?
Choose it if you want the work concentrated: daily training for one or two weeks, playgroup time with matched dogs around it, an update each day and coaching at the end, all for a few drives instead of many. If weekly lessons close to home suit your dog and your schedule, that is a reasonable choice too.
