Board and train for Malden, MA dog owners

Malden's rules are short and firm: a leash of six feet or less everywhere but your own property, and two city dog parks, one of them governed by an ordinance of its own. One of its rules matters to any dog trained with food rewards, because no treats are allowed inside the Trafton Park enclosure. Here is how a stay in Gloucester fits a Malden family, the drive, two places to practice, the city's licensing and what happens after.

Why Gloucester

Malden is about 50 minutes from Dogtown, and a stay turns a few drives into one or two weeks of daily work

A weekly class in Gloucester would mean close to two hours in the car each time, which is why the stay is the format to look at from Malden. The trips shrink to a handful: the short assessment, drop-off and the coaching at the end. In between, your dog trains every day with Gabriella Pope, our Director of Training & Canine Behaviorist, who holds a B.S. in Biochemistry and has more than ten years of hands-on work with behaviorally complex dogs.

The rest of the day is the other reason. Daycare integration and enrichment are part of both programs, so the day includes playgroup time with 7 to 10 dogs matched by size and temperament, the setting where a calm greeting or a recall away from play gets tested. You hear how the stay is going every day, and nothing in the method uses force, fear or pain. Foundation covers the basics in one week; Advanced proofs them against distraction over two.

The drive

From Malden, Route 99 and Route 1 lead to Interstate 95 and Route 128: about 50 minutes

Allow about 50 minutes outside rush hour, by our estimate. From Malden Center, Salem Street leads east to Broadway, which is Route 99; follow it north into Saugus and onto Route 1 north, then take Interstate 95 north, which shares the road with Route 128 for a stretch. Where they split in Peabody, keep right on Route 128 for Gloucester, ride it to its end and turn left on Eastern Avenue. Number 210 is about a mile toward Rockport. Interstate 93 north to 95 also works.

Malden is outside the Pup Van towns; ask us about pick-up. The van runs at $10 each way within Rockport, Gloucester, Essex and Manchester-by-the-Sea. The Commuter Rail does reach Gloucester, but the MBTA's rider rules allow a larger dog that does not fit in a carrier only off-peak and on a leash, at staff discretion when it is crowded, and our building is a few miles from the station. With your dog's food and a comfort item to carry, most drop-offs are easier by car.

Practice spots

Practice outside the Trafton Park fence with treats and inside it without; walk Pine Banks Park on a leash

The Trafton Park dog park, at Jacob and Granite Streets, is a fenced area on the northeast side of the park, listed as open from 8 AM to 8 PM every day. Malden's ordinance lets dogs off leash inside it, entering and leaving on a leash, with a handler at least 13 years old and no more than two dogs each. It also bans food of any kind, dog treats included, along with children's toys and sports equipment, and the fine is $250 per offense. A dog trained with food rewards needs a plan before it goes in.

The plan is to do the paid repetitions outside the fence and keep the inside for play. Work recall and calm attention on a leash near the park first, with treats, then go in and use praise and a release back to play as the reward. Pine Banks Park, at 1087 Main Street, has a second dog park on its north side with parking alongside; the rest of the park is a leashed walk under the city's six-foot rule.

  1. 01

Leash on at the car, and walk to the Trafton gate on a slack leash

  2. 02

Outside the fence, ten quick recalls and sits, each one paid with a treat

  3. 03

Put the treats away in the car before the gate, since food is not allowed inside

  4. 04

Inside, call once and reward with praise and a release back to play

  5. 05

Leash on before you leave, and close each gate behind you

  6. 06

On other days, walk the Pine Banks paths on a six-foot leash

City rules

Malden wants a six-foot leash off your property and licenses dogs at $15 or $20 through the City Clerk

The City Clerk's Office is at City Hall, 215 Pleasant Street, second floor, Room 220, and licenses can also be bought online. Under the city code, an owner applies each year with a rabies certificate, and the fee at the time of writing is $15 for a spayed or neutered dog and $20 otherwise. There is no fee for a dog owned by someone aged 70 or older or for a service dog, and one dwelling unit may hold no more than three dog licenses. Failing to license carries a $50 fine.

The date needs a check. The city code and the city's online license page name different renewal dates, so ask the clerk at 781-397-7116 which one applies before you renew. The leash rule is clearer: a chain or leash no longer than six feet at all times except on your own property, a $50 fine, and no dog tied where it can reach a street or sidewalk. Malden also holds rabies clinics each April and September at the Central Fire Station, at $10 per dog or cat.

  • Fee: $15 spayed or neutered, $20 otherwise; free for owners 70 or older
  • No more than three dog licenses per dwelling unit
  • Leash: six feet or less off your property; $50 fine
  • Rabies clinics each April and September, $10 per animal

After the stay

After the stay, the coaching is in Gloucester and the follow-up can be a single private session

Coaching ends every stay, and it happens at our building: one go-home lesson for Foundation and two scheduled coaching lessons for Advanced. The trainer runs each cue with your dog, then talks you through running it yourself until the timing is yours. Bring the Trafton question along: ask how to keep a recall strong in a place where food rewards are not allowed, and practice the praise-and-release reward during the lesson.

From Malden, a private session from $94 is often the simplest follow-up when a skill wobbles. Canine Campus, with 2, 4 or 6 weeks of day training and your dog home at night, includes pick-up and drop-off; ask whether that pick-up reaches Malden before counting on it, since a daily round trip is a lot otherwise. If your dog also comes for daycare, Dogtown Academy, at $89 for a full day or $69 for a half, adds a trainer's session to the day.

Asked and answered

Questions people ask about this

Short, complete answers you can act on today. More in the full FAQ.

Can my dog have treats at the Trafton Park dog park?
No. Malden's dog park ordinance bans food of every kind inside the Trafton Park enclosure, dog treats included, and sets a $250 fine per offense. Reward your dog with treats on a leash outside the fence, then use praise and a release back to play as the reward once you are inside.
How long is the drive from Malden to Dogtown?
About 50 minutes outside rush hour, by our estimate. Take Salem Street to Broadway, which is Route 99, head north to Route 1 in Saugus and on to Interstate 95, then follow Route 128 toward Gloucester to its end and Eastern Avenue to number 210.
Is Malden served by the Pup Van?
No, Malden is outside the Pup Van towns, so ask us about pick-up for your street. The van's published fare, $10 each way, applies in Rockport, Gloucester, Essex and Manchester-by-the-Sea. Keep the last day of the stay free to drive up, because the coaching is held at Dogtown.
When is the Malden dog license due?
Check with the City Clerk at 781-397-7116. The city code and the online license page give two different dates, so we do not print either. The fee is $15 for a spayed or neutered dog and $20 otherwise at the time of writing, and owners aged 70 or older pay nothing. Bring the license to Dogtown with the vaccine records.
Is a one-week Foundation stay worth the drive from Malden?
It can be, for a puppy or young dog that needs manners from the ground up: obedience, leash skills, place, stay, recall, impulse control and crate manners in a week, with one go-home lesson. An adolescent that knows the basics but loses them outdoors usually needs Advanced's two weeks. Gabriella Pope recommends one after a short assessment.
