Board and train for Arlington, MA dog owners
Arlington gives a trained dog real freedom, but on a timetable: off-leash hours in designated parks end at 9 AM, the Thorndike Field enclosure stays open into the evening, and school grounds are closed to dogs at all times. A dog that switches between leash and no leash on cue fits that timetable. Here is what an hour's drive to Gloucester buys, the route, two places to practice and the town's rules.
- Getting to Eastern Ave
- Mystic Street (Route 3) north through Winchester to Interstate 95 in Burlington, Route 128 toward Gloucester at the Peabody split, to its end and Eastern Avenue: about 60 minutes outside rush hour, by our estimate
- The Pup Van
- Outside the Pup Van towns; ask us about pick-up
- Dog licensing
- Town Clerk, 730 Massachusetts Avenue: calendar year, due January 1 with a grace period to about March 10, $15 neutered or spayed, $20 unaltered, $25 late fee (arlingtonma.gov)
- The beach rule
- Thorndike Field Dog Off-Leash Recreation Area: fenced, 6 AM to 9 PM daily; elsewhere off leash only in designated parks from opening to 9 AM; no dogs on school property (arlingtonma.gov)
- A trail we know
- Menotomy Rocks Park: no dogs off leash at any time in the woods (Arlington off-leash dog regulations)
- Dogtown dogs from here

Why Gloucester
The drive from Arlington is real; the reasons to make it are the full dog day, one trainer and the daily update
Gloucester is not local to Arlington: it is about an hour each way, and you will make the trip at least three times, for the short assessment, the drop-off and the coaching at the end. So the stay has to offer something a closer, weekly format does not. The main thing is the shape of the day. Training sessions sit inside a full day in our building, with playgroups of 7 to 10 dogs matched by size and temperament and enrichment in between.
That matters for an Arlington dog, because the town's off-leash rules expect a dog to stay under effective control with other dogs around, and a matched playgroup gives the stay real dogs to practice near. Gabriella Pope leads both programs and meets your dog first. Foundation covers obedience, leash skills, place, stay, recall and impulse control in a week; Advanced spends two weeks adding distraction proofing, outings and neutrality. You get an update each day, and the training never relies on force.
- At least three trips: assessment, drop-off and coaching
- Training inside a full day of matched playgroups and enrichment
- One trainer, Gabriella Pope, from first meeting to handover
- Positive reinforcement; no prong, choke or shock collars
The drive
Route 3 north, Interstate 95 and Route 128 bring Arlington to Eastern Ave in about 60 minutes
Allow about 60 minutes outside rush hour, by our estimate. From Arlington Center, Mystic Street carries Route 3 north; it becomes Cambridge Street through Winchester and Cambridge Road in Woburn before it reaches Interstate 95 in Burlington. Go north on 95, which is also Route 128, keep right for Route 128 toward Gloucester where the two split in Peabody, and follow 128 to its end. A left onto Eastern Avenue leads to number 210, about a mile toward Rockport.
Arlington is outside the Pup Van towns; ask us about pick-up before you build the week around it. The van's fare of $10 each way is limited to Rockport, Gloucester, Essex and Manchester-by-the-Sea. If the car itself is hard on your dog, with drooling, panting or car sickness, mention it on the training form. An hour each way is a fair factor in choosing a format, and Gabby can talk through whether a stay or another program fits your dog better.
Practice spots
Practice inside the Thorndike Field enclosure first, then on a leash in the Menotomy Rocks Park woods
The Thorndike Field Dog Off-Leash Recreation Area is fenced and open from 6 AM to 9 PM every day. Its rules read like a checklist for a newly trained dog: leashed on the way in and out, in view and under the handler's control at all times, no more than two dogs per handler, handlers 16 or older, and prong and choke collars removed at the entrance. Training treats are allowed and dog food is not, so bring small rewards and practice the recall away from play.
Menotomy Rocks Park is the leash classroom. The town's off-leash guide says no dog may be off leash at any time in its woods, so use the trails for loose-leash walking and calm passes with other walkers. Leave Thorndike with care, too: the enclosure opens onto the Minuteman Bikeway, which the town excludes from off-leash use, so the leash goes back on before the gate opens and the bikes go by.
- 01
Clip the leash on at the car and walk to the Thorndike gate on a slack leash
- 02
Inside, unclip, let your dog sniff, and call once when it is not busy
- 03
Pay the recall with a training treat at your feet, then send your dog back to play
- 04
Leave while it is still going well, and clip on before you step toward the bikeway
- 05
Later in the week, walk the Menotomy Rocks woods on a leash, rewarding check-ins
- 06
If your dog stiffens near another dog, add distance first, then reward a look at you
Town rules
Arlington licenses dogs for the calendar year and allows off-leash time only at set hours and places
The Town Clerk at 730 Massachusetts Avenue licenses every dog six months or older for the calendar year. Renewals are due by January 1, with a grace period to roughly March 10, and a $25 late fee applies after it. At the time of writing the fee is $15 for a neutered or spayed dog and $20 for an unaltered dog, owners aged 70 or older pay no license fee, and a dog moving to town should be registered within 30 days. Apply online, by mail or at the Town Hall drop box.
The town bylaw on leashing allows up to two dogs per handler off leash, under effective control, on Park and Recreation land from opening until 9 AM, except next to school property, within 15 feet of playground equipment and where the commission excludes it. Several parks end the hour early on spring and fall weekends, so read the posted signs. Dogs may not go on school property at all, leashed or not. Fines for an off-leash offense run from $75 to $200, and failing to display a license costs $50.
| Rule | Arlington, at the time of writing |
|---|---|
| License fee | $15 neutered or spayed, $20 unaltered, for the calendar year |
| Renewal | Due January 1; grace period to about March 10, then a $25 late fee |
| Off-leash hours | Opening to 9 AM in designated parks, two dogs per handler |
| Thorndike enclosure | 6 AM to 9 PM daily, leashed in and out |
| Off-leash fines | $75, $100, $150, then $200 |
| School grounds | No dogs at any time |
After the stay
After pick-up, the coaching happens in Gloucester and Arlington's morning hours become the homework
Coaching closes the stay, and it takes place at Dogtown: one go-home lesson for Foundation and two scheduled coaching lessons for Advanced. The trainer demonstrates every cue, then has you run it until your dog answers you rather than the trainer. Tell Gabby about Arlington's off-leash hours at the consult, so the lesson can cover the two transitions that matter most there: unclipping calmly at the start of a session and clipping on cleanly at the end.
Afterward, private sessions from $94 are the simplest follow-up for a skill that slips. Canine Campus offers 2, 4 or 6 weeks of day training while your dog sleeps at home, with pick-up and drop-off, daily reports and homework; ask whether its pick-up reaches Arlington before you plan on it. Dogtown Academy, $89 a full day or $69 a half, puts a session with our trainer inside a play day for a dog that comes to us for daycare.
- Go-home lesson at Dogtown; two coaching lessons with Advanced
- Practice unclipping and clipping on as cues of their own
- Private sessions from $94
- Canine Campus or Academy days for more structure
