Board and train for Seabrook, NH dog owners

Seabrook sits at the first New Hampshire exit on I-95, and Gloucester is still close to an hour away. In summer, Seabrook's beach takes dogs only before 8 AM and after 6 PM, on a leash. This page covers whether a stay in Gloucester is worth the drive, the route, two beaches to practice on and the town's licensing rules.

Worth the drive?

A Seabrook family weighs about 55 minutes each way against a force-free stay in a dog facility

Living near the state line helps, but Gloucester is still about 55 minutes away outside rush hour, by our estimate, and a stay means several trips: a short assessment with Gabby, the free evaluation, drop-off and the coaching at the end, plus a second coaching visit with Advanced. The drive is worth it for families who want the training fear- and force-free, positive reinforcement only with no prong, choke or shock collar, and who want their dog to live in a staffed building, in an overnight suite with 24/7 monitoring, while it learns.

A stay is also a way to get daily training done without daily driving. Foundation, one week, covers obedience, leash skills, place, stay, recall, impulse control and crate and household manners. Advanced, two weeks, adds distraction proofing, real-world outings, neutrality and structured socialization, which is what a summer evening on a busy beach asks of a dog. Daycare integration in playgroups of 7 to 10 dogs, matched by size and temperament, gives the practice real dogs to work around.

The drive

From Seabrook, I-95 south into Massachusetts, then Route 1A, Route 133 and Route 128 to Eastern Ave

Get on I-95 south at Route 107 and you cross into Massachusetts within a couple of miles. One route leaves the interstate in Newbury and runs on local roads to Route 1A in Rowley, then Route 1A and Route 133 into Ipswich and Route 133 east through Essex to Route 128 in West Gloucester. The other stays on I-95 to Danvers and crosses to Route 128 north. Ride 128 to its end in Gloucester, turn onto Eastern Avenue, and number 210 is about a mile along. By our estimate both routes take about 55 minutes outside rush hour.

Beach-season traffic on Route 1A and Route 133 can slow the back-road route, so on a summer Saturday the interstate may be the better bet. Book drop-off and pick-up inside our windows: weekdays 6:30 to 9:30 AM, 12 to 1 PM or 4 to 6:30 PM, Saturdays 8 to 10 AM, 12 to 1 PM or 4 to 6 PM. Seabrook is outside the Pup Van towns, so ask us about pick-up, and plan to drive the last day yourself.

Practice spots

Practice on Seabrook Beach at the summer edges of the day, and on Salisbury Beach in the cooler months

Seabrook's town code allows animals on the town's beaches from Memorial Day to Labor Day only after 6 PM and before 8 AM, and the police department's 2026 summary adds that every dog must be on a leash and under its owner's control, with waste picked up at once. The beach is closed to all public use from 1 AM until sunrise. Early and late hours suit training anyway: fewer people, cooler sand and fewer distractions. New Hampshire Fish and Game lists Seabrook among the places piping plovers occur, and harassing them is illegal, so keep clear of any fenced nesting area.

Salisbury Beach State Reservation, just south across the line in Massachusetts, follows a different calendar. The state Department of Conservation and Recreation keeps dogs off the beach from April 1 to September 15, and whenever dogs are allowed they must be leashed; the reservation is open from sunrise to sunset. That makes Salisbury your fall, winter and early spring classroom and Seabrook's dawn and evening hours your summer one.

Seabrook rules

Seabrook licenses dogs from January 1 to April 30: $7.50, $10, or $2 for a senior's first dog

Seabrook's Town Clerk, at Town Hall, 99 Lafayette Road, licenses dogs during a January 1 to April 30 window each year, for a license that runs from May 1, as RSA 466:1 requires for every dog four months or older. At the time of writing the fees are $7.50 for a neutered or spayed dog or a puppy aged 4 to 7 months, $10 for an unaltered dog, $2 for the first dog of an owner 65 or older and $20 for a group of five or more. Bring the rabies certificate and, if it applies, proof of spay or neuter, or renew online.

By the town's notice, a late license adds $1 a month per dog, and the owner may also face a civil forfeiture and other fees; if a forfeiture goes unpaid, a court summons follows under state law. The town's animal code also requires owners to remove waste at once from streets, beaches, sidewalks and parks. For leash rules beyond the beach, ask the Town Clerk, 603-474-3152, or the police department before relying on one. For the stay, we need the Seabrook license, not a Massachusetts one, with the Rabies, DHPP and Bordetella records.

  • Licensing window: January 1 to April 30
  • $7.50 altered or puppy, $10 unaltered, $2 senior's first dog
  • Rabies certificate, plus spay or neuter proof if it applies
  • Summer beach: leashed, before 8 AM or after 6 PM

After the stay

After the stay, the coaching is at Dogtown and the beach hours shape the homework

Foundation closes with one go-home lesson and Advanced with two scheduled coaching lessons, held at Dogtown with you handling your dog while the trainer adjusts your timing and rewards. From Seabrook, the second Advanced lesson is a manageable trip; put both dates in the calendar before drop-off. Ask the trainer to cover a leashed walk past other dogs on sand, since that is the Seabrook beach on a July evening.

Home visits in Seabrook are not on our published menu; ask the front desk. Private sessions at Dogtown start from $94, and Canine Campus, 2, 4 or 6 weeks of day training with pick-up and drop-off, is worth asking about only if Campus pick-up reaches your street. Dogtown Academy, $89 for a full day or $69 for a half, puts a session with our trainer inside a day of play, a refresher that works whenever you are on Cape Ann with your dog.

Asked and answered

Questions people ask about this

Short, complete answers you can act on today. More in the full FAQ.

When can my dog be on Seabrook Beach in summer?
From Memorial Day to Labor Day, only before 8 AM and after 6 PM, under the town code, and the police department's 2026 summary requires a leash and owner control on the beach. The beach is closed to all public use between 1 AM and sunrise. Pick up waste immediately, and stay clear of any area fenced for nesting plovers.
Can we practice at Salisbury Beach after the stay?
Yes, outside its closed season. Salisbury Beach State Reservation, run by the Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation, keeps dogs off the beach from April 1 to September 15 and requires a leash whenever dogs are allowed. It is open from sunrise to sunset, which makes it a good fall and winter practice walk.
Do we need a Massachusetts license for our Seabrook dog?
No. We ask for a current license from your dog's own town, so bring the Seabrook license from the Town Clerk at 99 Lafayette Road, with Rabies, DHPP and Bordetella records, to the free evaluation. New Hampshire licenses run from May 1 to April 30, so a stay that starts in May needs the renewed license.
Is Seabrook close enough to Gloucester for board and train?
It is about 55 minutes each way outside rush hour, by our estimate, nearer than most of the New Hampshire Seacoast. A stay still means several trips: assessment, evaluation, drop-off and the coaching at the end. If you want a force-free method and a facility stay, the drive is manageable; if you need weekly sessions, plan for the time it takes.
Does the Pup Van come to Seabrook?
No. The Pup Van serves Rockport, Gloucester, Essex and Manchester-by-the-Sea at $10 each way, and Seabrook is outside those towns, so ask us about pick-up. Plan on driving yourself, and on being here for the final day, since the go-home lesson takes place at Dogtown with you on the leash.
