Board and train for Portsmouth, NH dog owners

From Portsmouth, Gloucester is a long way to go for training, and we would rather say so up front. A stay suits a Seacoast family that wants force-free work done daily in a dog facility and can make four or five trips to get it. This page covers that decision, the route, two Portsmouth places to practice and the license that crosses the state line with your dog.

Why Gloucester

Why a Portsmouth family might drive 75 minutes: no corrective tools, a staffed building and two weeks at most

Distance is the first thing to weigh. Each trip from Portsmouth is about 75 minutes outside rush hour, by our estimate, and a stay involves the assessment with Gabby, the free evaluation, drop-off and the coaching at the end, plus a second coaching visit with Advanced. Families choose it anyway when they want a fear- and force-free program, with positive reinforcement only and no prong, choke or shock collar, and want their dog to sleep in a facility, in an overnight suite with 24/7 monitoring, rather than in someone's home.

The format also suits distance. Your dog trains every day for one week of Foundation or two weeks of Advanced while you stay on the Seacoast and read the daily update. Foundation covers obedience, leash skills, place, stay, recall, impulse control and crate manners. Advanced adds distraction proofing, real-world outings, neutrality and confidence building, the skills a dog needs for a walk down a busy street or past a restaurant patio. Daycare integration and enrichment fill the rest of the day, in playgroups of 7 to 10 dogs when your dog is ready.

  • Up to five trips: assessment, evaluation, drop-off and one or two coaching visits
  • Positive reinforcement only; no prong, choke or shock collars
  • An overnight suite with 24/7 monitoring
  • A daily update while you are home in Portsmouth

The drive

Portsmouth to Eastern Ave: I-95 south, then Route 1A and Route 133 through Ipswich and Essex

From downtown, take the Route 1 Bypass to I-95 south and cross into Massachusetts. The shorter way leaves the interstate in Newbury and follows local roads to Route 1A in Rowley, then Route 1A and Route 133 into Ipswich and Route 133 east through Essex to Route 128 in West Gloucester; take 128 to its end and turn onto Eastern Avenue. The all-highway alternative stays on I-95 to Danvers before crossing to Route 128. By our estimate both take about 75 minutes outside rush hour.

Plan the clock as carefully as the route. Weekday drop-off and pick-up run 6:30 to 9:30 AM, 12 to 1 PM and 4 to 6:30 PM, with Saturday windows of 8 to 10 AM, 12 to 1 PM and 4 to 6 PM. The free evaluation is a weekday appointment between 6:30 and 9:30 AM, so a Portsmouth family sets off early that morning. Portsmouth sits outside the Pup Van towns of Rockport, Gloucester, Essex and Manchester-by-the-Sea; ask us about pick-up, and keep the last day for yourself.

Practice in Portsmouth

Practice at the South Mill Pond dog park and on Peirce Island, and keep off Four Tree Island

The South Mill Pond Recreation Complex includes a fenced, off-leash dog park beside the tennis and pickleball courts, next to Leary Field and Langdon Park, and the park is open from dawn to dusk. A fenced space is the right first test after a stay: walk in on leash, let your dog take in the other dogs, and practice a recall and a calm clip-on before you trust either in an open field. Keep your dog out of the pickleball court area, where the city's posted rules exclude animals.

Peirce Island, according to the city's Prescott Park pages, has walking trails and an off-leash dog area, which makes it the next step up: leash manners on the trails, free play only in the designated area. Four Tree Island, reached by a gravel causeway about 100 yards long, allows no dogs at all. Downtown, only restaurants holding a health department variance may let dogs into outdoor dining areas, and there a dog must wear a collar or harness, stay on a short leash under control and keep at least seven feet from any entrance.

License and leash

Portsmouth licenses run May to April under New Hampshire law: $7.50 altered, $10 unaltered

New Hampshire licenses every dog four months or older through the clerk of the town or city where it lives, and the license runs from May 1 to April 30 whenever you buy it, under RSA 466:1. In Portsmouth that is the City Clerk's Office at City Hall, 1 Junkins Avenue. For 2026 the city charges $7.50 for a neutered or spayed dog, $10 for an unaltered dog and $3 for a senior citizen's first dog, and a puppy licensed for the first time between 3 and 7 months pays $7.50. Proof of rabies vaccination is required, and renewals can be made online, by mail or in person.

State law adds the late terms: $1 for each month a fee stays unpaid after the end of May (RSA 466:7), and a $25 forfeiture for failing to license (RSA 466:13). For Portsmouth's leash rules on streets and in parks, ask the Animal Control Officer, 603-610-7441, or read the city ordinance before relying on one. For the stay, bring the Portsmouth license with the Rabies, DHPP and Bordetella records. A Massachusetts license is not needed.

After the stay

After the stay, Portsmouth families keep training through the coaching and a few planned returns

Every stay ends with coaching at Dogtown: one go-home lesson after Foundation, two scheduled coaching lessons with Advanced. You watch each cue, then handle your own dog while the trainer adjusts your timing. From Portsmouth, settle the dates before drop-off and give the lesson a full, unhurried slot rather than squeezing it between two long drives. Note anything in the daily updates that surprised you, so the questions are ready.

Home visits on the Seacoast are not on our published menu, so ask the front desk; the published follow-up means coming back to Gloucester. Private sessions start from $94 and are best saved for one stubborn skill. Canine Campus includes pick-up and drop-off, but it is built around dogs near Cape Ann; ask whether Campus pick-up could reach Portsmouth before you count on it. The realistic plan is a steady practice routine at South Mill Pond and Peirce Island, with a private session if something stalls.

  • Coaching dates agreed before drop-off
  • Private sessions at Dogtown from $94
  • No home visits; follow-up happens in Gloucester
  • Practice order: the fenced park first, Peirce Island second

Asked and answered

Questions people ask about this

Short, complete answers you can act on today. More in the full FAQ.

Do we need a Massachusetts dog license for a stay in Gloucester?
No. We ask for a current license from the town where your dog lives, so a Portsmouth dog brings the license issued by the Portsmouth City Clerk under New Hampshire law. Bring it to the free evaluation with Rabies, DHPP and Bordetella records. Check the date, too: New Hampshire licenses end on April 30, so a stay in May needs the renewed one.
How long is the drive from Portsmouth to Dogtown?
About 75 minutes outside rush hour, by our estimate. Take I-95 south into Massachusetts, then either Route 1A and Route 133 through Rowley, Ipswich and Essex, or I-95 on to Danvers and across. Both routes finish at the end of Route 128 in Gloucester, followed by a short run along Eastern Avenue.
Is it worth driving from Portsmouth for a one-week Foundation stay?
It can be, if the method and the setting matter to you. Foundation means about four trips, assessment, evaluation, drop-off and the go-home lesson, with daily training in between. If your dog needs real-world reliability around crowds and patios, Advanced, two weeks, does more for nearly the same driving. Gabby recommends one after the assessment.
Can my dog walk on Four Tree Island?
No. The city does not allow dogs on Four Tree Island, along with vehicles and alcohol, and asks visitors not to disturb the wildlife. Nearby Peirce Island has walking trails and an off-leash dog area, and the South Mill Pond Recreation Complex has a fenced off-leash dog park open from dawn to dusk.
Does the Pup Van go to Portsmouth?
No. The Pup Van runs in Rockport, Gloucester, Essex and Manchester-by-the-Sea, at $10 each way, and Portsmouth is outside those towns. Ask us about pick-up when you send the training form, but plan on driving the trips yourself, and certainly the last one, since the coaching takes place at Dogtown.
