Board and train for Hampton, NH dog owners
Hampton's dog calendar turns on the beach. From May through September the state park sand is closed to dogs, and in the off-season it opens to them on a leash no longer than six feet. Town parks take leashed dogs too, but never near a big crowd. This page covers what a stay in Gloucester can build for that, the drive, two places to practice and the town's rules.
- Getting to Eastern Ave
- Route 1 (Lafayette Road) south to I-95 in Seabrook; local roads in Newbury to Route 1A, Routes 1A and 133 through Ipswich and Essex (or I-95 to Danvers), then Route 128 to its end and Eastern Avenue: about 65 minutes outside rush hour, by our estimate

Why Gloucester
Hampton dogs meet crowds, beaches and short leashes, which is what a two-week stay is built around
Hampton is a crowd town in summer, and its rules reflect that. The town code bars dogs from within 100 feet of any town park activity where more than 500 people are expected, and the state beach is closed to them from May 1 to September 30. For the rest of the year, the beach is a leashed walk among other dogs, gulls and surf. Calm passing and attention on a short leash count most, and those are the core of Advanced, two weeks, with distraction proofing, real-world outings and neutrality added to the Foundation skills.
Gloucester is about 65 minutes away outside rush hour, by our estimate, and a stay means several trips. Families make them for a fear- and force-free method, positive reinforcement only with no prong, choke or shock collar, and for a facility stay: an overnight suite with 24/7 monitoring, daycare integration in playgroups of 7 to 10, and daily training led by Gabriella Pope. Foundation, one week, suits puppies and young dogs that need basic manners, place, stay, recall and crate habits first.
- Advanced: neutrality and distraction proofing for crowds and beaches
- Foundation: obedience, place, stay, recall and crate manners
- Positive reinforcement only; no prong, choke or shock collars
- An overnight suite with 24/7 monitoring, and an update each day
The drive
Hampton to Eastern Ave: Route 1 south to I-95, then Route 1A, Route 133 and Route 128
From Hampton center, take Lafayette Road, Route 1, south and join I-95 south in Seabrook. In Massachusetts one route leaves the interstate in Newbury for Route 1A in Rowley and follows Route 133 through Ipswich and Essex to Route 128; the other stays on I-95 to Danvers and crosses to 128. Both finish where Route 128 ends in Gloucester, with a mile on Eastern Avenue to our door. By our estimate the drive is about 65 minutes outside rush hour, and summer beach traffic on Route 1 adds to it.
Leave margin for the season as well as the hour. Our drop-off and pick-up windows are 6:30 to 9:30 AM, 12 to 1 PM and 4 to 6:30 PM on weekdays and 8 to 10 AM, 12 to 1 PM and 4 to 6 PM on Saturdays, and the free evaluation is booked on a weekday between 6:30 and 9:30 AM. Hampton lies outside the Pup Van towns of Rockport, Gloucester, Essex and Manchester-by-the-Sea; ask us about pick-up, and plan to come yourself on the last day.
Practice in Hampton
Practice on Hampton Beach from October to April and in the Town Forest all year, leashed in both
Hampton Beach State Park, at 160 Ocean Boulevard, does not allow pets on the beach from May 1 to September 30. From October 1 to April 30, dogs are welcome on a standard or retractable leash no longer than six feet, and owners must pick up the waste and bin it or carry it off. Treat those six feet as the classroom. New Hampshire Fish and Game lists Hampton and Seabrook as where piping plovers occur, and the birds are legally protected, so give any fenced or signed area a wide berth.
The Hampton Town Forest is a group of town-owned parcels, about 133 acres in all, many of them off Barbour Road and Woodland Road. The town's bylaw opens it from one hour before sunrise to one hour after sunset and allows walking or running with leashed pets, with all waste removed; pets off the leash are not allowed. Hunting is permitted under state rules, so wear orange in the fall. Quiet woods are the place to rebuild attention and loose-leash walking before you add the beach.

Hampton rules
Hampton keeps dogs leashed off their own property and licenses them by April 30
Section 18-6 of the Hampton town code makes it unlawful to let a dog run at large without a leash and under restraint, except on the owner's own property or while hunting under the owner's control. Town parks admit only properly leashed, controlled dogs that are not a nuisance, and no dog may be at or within 100 feet of an activity where more than 500 people are expected or present; the park rules carry a penalty of $100 to $250 per offense. The town's dog license page notes that the code also requires owners to pick up after their dogs, under section 18-19.
Licenses come from the Town Clerk at 100 Winnacunnet Road and are due by April 30, for a license that runs from May 1. At the time of writing the fees are $7.50 for a neutered or spayed dog, $10 for an unaltered dog, $7.50 for a puppy under 7 months and $3 for a senior citizen's first dog. The clerk needs the veterinarian's rabies statement, not the tag, valid through April 30. A grace period runs to May 31; after it come a $25 civil forfeiture, a $10.44 certified mail fee and $1 a month. We ask for the Hampton license, not a Massachusetts one.
- Leash and restraint off your own property (section 18-6)
- Town parks: leashed, and never within 100 feet of a 500-person event
- License by April 30: $7.50 altered, $10 unaltered, $3 senior's first dog
- After May 31: $25 forfeiture, $10.44 mail fee and $1 a month
After the stay
Coaching closes the stay at Dogtown, and Hampton's beach season sets the practice calendar
Foundation ends with one go-home lesson and Advanced with two scheduled coaching lessons, held at our building with you on the leash. The trainer demonstrates each cue, then coaches you through it. If your dog finishes in summer, ask the trainer to plan the weeks before October around the Town Forest and your own street, so the beach reopening is a step up rather than a shock.
Home visits in Hampton are not on our published menu; ask the front desk. Follow-up is a private session at Dogtown, from $94, booked when a skill stalls. Canine Campus offers 2, 4 or 6 weeks of day training with pick-up and drop-off, but from Hampton that pick-up may not be available, so ask first. Most Hampton families keep going with what the coaching showed them and a regular practice slot, saving the drive for a private session if they need one.
At Dogtown
Training, and the services a Hampton stay uses
Board and train is part of Dogtown Professional Training. Daycare playgroups and overnight suites are the setting for the stay's practice and its rest.
