Board and train for Rockport, MA dog owners
Rockport lets a dog walk under direct voice control instead of on a leash, except downtown, so a recall that works the first time is worth more here than in most North Shore towns. This page covers what a one- or two-week stay in Gloucester offers a Rockport family, the short drive, two places to practice in town and the rules the Town of Rockport publishes.
- Getting to Eastern Ave
- Broadway to Route 127 (Main Street), which becomes Eastern Avenue at the Gloucester line: about 10 minutes outside rush hour, by our estimate
- The Pup Van
- Yes, $10 each way
- Dog licensing
- Town Clerk, Town Hall, 34 Broadway: every dog 6 months or older, licensed with proof of rabies vaccination; ask the clerk (978-546-6894) for the current fee (rockportma.gov)
- The beach rule
- Town beaches such as Back Beach: no dogs June 1 to September 15; leash or voice control the rest of the year; always leashed downtown (Rockport beach and park regulations, town dog page)
- A trail we know
- Halibut Point State Park: dogs must be leashed (mass.gov); the adjoining Halibut Point Reservation (The Trustees), 4 Gott Avenue, Pigeon Cove: leash at all times (thetrustees.org)

Why Gloucester
Why a Rockport family trains a few miles down Route 127: short trips and a force-free method
A Rockport family gets two things from a board and train at Dogtown: very short trips and a method you can keep using at home. Our building sits just past the Rockport line in Gloucester, so the assessment, the drop-off and the coaching at the end are errands rather than outings. The training is fear- and force-free, built on positive reinforcement and led by Gabriella Pope, our Director of Training & Canine Behaviorist, and no prong, choke or shock collar is used at any point.
The town's own rule is the other reason. Rockport asks for a leash or direct voice control at all times, and voice control only means something if your dog turns on the first call with a jogger or a gull in view. Foundation, one week, works on recall alongside place, stay, impulse control, basic obedience and leash skills. Advanced, two weeks, adds distraction proofing, real-world outings and neutrality, the work a dog needs before you rely on your voice on an off-season beach.
- Foundation, 1 week: obedience, leash skills, place, stay, recall, impulse control, crate manners
- Advanced, 2 weeks: distraction proofing, outings, neutrality and two coaching lessons
- A daily update to you while your dog is with us
- Quoted after a short assessment; sessions start from $94
Getting here
From Rockport, Route 127 turns into Eastern Avenue: about 10 minutes, and the Pup Van covers the town
The drive is about 10 minutes outside rush hour, by our estimate. From the center of Rockport, Broadway leads to Main Street, which is Route 127; follow it south toward Gloucester, and at the town line the same road becomes Eastern Avenue, with number 210 a short way along. A July weekend through the middle of town is slower, so build in time on drop-off morning. The first trips are the short assessment with Gabby and the free evaluation, held on weekdays between 6:30 and 9:30 AM by appointment.
Rockport is one of the four Pup Van towns, with Gloucester, Essex and Manchester-by-the-Sea, and the fare is $10 each way. The van is booked with daycare, Dogtown Academy and overnight days, so ask the front desk whether it can bring your dog in on the first morning of a stay. Collection day is different: come in person, because the go-home lesson takes place at Dogtown and the skills are being handed to you, not to the van driver.
Practice spots
Practice at Halibut Point on a leash and at Back Beach from September 16 to May 31
Halibut Point State Park requires dogs to be leashed, and The Trustees' Halibut Point Reservation next door, which shares the state park's entrance and lot, asks for a leash at all times too. That makes the point a loose-leash classroom with a view. Run the order from your go-home lesson: attention at the car, a loose leash on the path, a sit at each overlook, and a reward whenever your dog chooses to walk beside you. Keep the leash short near the quarry rim and on the granite. End the walk while your dog is still getting it right, because a tired dog stops listening before it stops walking.
Back Beach is a town beach, so Rockport's beach and park regulations set its calendar: no dogs on any public beach from June 1 to September 15, and a leash or voice control in the months between. The town keeps a waste bag dispenser there. Use the open season for recall on a long line: call once, pay well, release your dog back to sniffing, and leave the line clipped on until the first call works every time. The same regulations prohibit disturbing nesting birds, so give any roped-off area a wide berth.
Downtown asks for different work. The town requires dogs to be leashed there at all times, so the streets around Dock Square in the quiet months are a place to practice neutrality: walking past other dogs, strollers and food smells without stopping to greet anyone. Two short loops beat one long one, and a dog that manages a calm pass deserves its reward the moment it happens, not at the end of the street.

- September 16 to May 31: a leash or voice control on the sand

Town rules
Rockport licenses dogs through the Town Clerk at 34 Broadway and wants a leash or voice control everywhere
Every Rockport dog six months or older needs a license from the Town Clerk's office at Town Hall, 34 Broadway, and the clerk issues it only once you show proof of a current rabies vaccine. Online registration is also offered. The town's dog pages do not print the fee, so call the clerk at 978-546-6894 before you renew rather than guess. Rockport also says dogs must wear both the license tag and the rabies tag at all times, which matters most on the day your dog's recall fails.
The leash rule has three parts at the time of writing: a leash or direct voice control at all times, a leash in your possession even when your dog is not wearing it, and a leash without exception downtown. Dogs are kept off public beaches from June 1 to September 15 and out of cemeteries all year, and the town's bylaw penalties for not picking up run from $25 to $200. For the stay, bring your Rockport license with the Rabies, DHPP and Bordetella records; we ask for your own town's license, not a Gloucester one.

After the stay
After the stay comes coaching at Dogtown, then private sessions from $94 or Canine Campus
Every stay ends with coaching for you, held at Dogtown. Foundation closes with one go-home lesson and Advanced includes two scheduled coaching lessons, in which the trainer runs each cue with your dog, then hands you the leash and adjusts your timing until your dog answers you. Bring everyone who walks the dog. Read back through the daily updates first and arrive with a list: the cue you most want to see, and the moment at home you dread.
If a skill slips once you are back in Rockport, private sessions start from $94 and are booked through the training team. For a dog that needs more weeks of structure but should sleep at home, Canine Campus runs Freshman for 2 weeks with about 10 training and adventure days, Dean's List for 4 weeks with about 20 sessions, and Graduate for 6 weeks with about 30, each with pick-up and drop-off, daily reports and homework. Ask whether Campus pick-up reaches your street.
