Board and train for Essex, MA dog owners
Essex leaves the leash to the owner: the town has no leash law, and its own page says dogs may roam unless they are deemed a nuisance. That freedom puts real weight on a dog's manners. Here is how a stay in Gloucester fits an Essex family, the drive, two places to practice in town, the licensing rules and what comes after.
- Getting to Eastern Ave
- Route 133 east (Main Street, then Eastern Avenue in Essex) into Gloucester, Route 128 north to its end, then Eastern Avenue: about 20 minutes outside rush hour, by our estimate
- The Pup Van
- Yes, $10 each way
- Dog licensing
- Town Clerk, Town Hall, 30 Martin Street: due March 31, $15 spayed or neutered, $24 intact, $15 late fee after March 31 (essexma.org)
- The beach rule
- No leash law; public beaches and Centennial Grove closed to dogs in June, July and August; Centennial Grove otherwise leash or direct control; no dogs in other public parks (essexma.org)
- A trail we know
- Allyn Cox Reservation (Essex County Greenbelt), 82 Eastern Avenue, Essex: 0.8 mile of trails, dog walking listed; carry a leash, sunrise to sunset (ecga.org)

Why train
With no leash law in Essex, the training has to hold without a leash
An Essex family has a particular reason to consider board and train: in town the leash is optional, so the dog's behavior is the safeguard. A dog trotting loose along a town road is legal; a dog that wanders off, chases a bike or rushes a stranger becomes a nuisance, and the owner answers for it. A week or two of daily, structured work gives your dog the skills that count most when nothing is clipped on: a recall, a stay, a wait at an edge and a calm pass.
Foundation, one week, covers basic obedience and leash skills, place, stay and recall, impulse control, and crate and household manners, plus daycare integration and enrichment. Advanced, two weeks, is for the adolescent who knows the basics in the kitchen and forgets them outdoors: distraction proofing, real-world outings, neutrality, confidence building and structured socialization. Gabriella Pope leads both programs with positive reinforcement only.
- A recall that works on the first call, built with rewards
- A wait at doors, at the car and at the road edge
- Calm passes around other dogs, from the two-week Advanced stay
- A daily update to you throughout the stay
Getting here
From Essex, Route 133 east and Route 128 north reach Eastern Ave in about 20 minutes
Allow about 20 minutes outside rush hour, by our estimate. From Essex center, Route 133 runs east as Main Street and then Eastern Avenue before it crosses into Gloucester as Essex Avenue. Join Route 128 north, stay on it through two rotaries to the end of the highway, and turn toward Rockport on Eastern Avenue in Gloucester; number 210 is about a mile along. Summer weekends on Route 133 run slower, so leave extra time on drop-off day.
One warning for your map app: two Eastern Avenues sit on this route. Essex County Greenbelt lists its Allyn Cox Reservation at 82 Eastern Avenue, Essex, on Route 133, while we are at 210 Eastern Ave, Gloucester, MA 01930. Type the town and the ZIP code, or you may arrive at the wrong one. Essex is one of the four Pup Van towns at $10 each way; ask the front desk whether the van can handle a board-and-train drop-off, and plan to drive in yourself for the go-home lesson.
Practice spots
Practice at Centennial Grove outside June to August, and on the Allyn Cox Reservation trails
Centennial Grove is the only public park in Essex that admits dogs, and only outside June, July and August. In the other nine months the town allows supervised dogs there on a leash or under their owner's direct control. That makes the Grove a fair exam for the stay's recall work. Practice on a long line first, then call your dog away from something interesting, and only drop the line once the first call works every time.
The Allyn Cox Reservation is Essex County Greenbelt land at 82 Eastern Avenue, with 31 acres, 0.8 mile of trails and dog walking listed among its activities. Greenbelt asks owners to carry a leash, leash any aggressive dog, keep noise down, never leave a dog unattended, prevent digging and carry the waste out, and its land is for use between sunrise and sunset. A short trail suits check-in practice: walk, wait for your dog to glance back at you, and pay that glance every time.
- 01
Clip a long line to a harness and let your dog explore the Grove
- 02
Call once, in a cheerful voice, when your dog is a few steps away and not busy
- 03
Reward at your feet with something better than the grass, then release it to sniff again
- 04
Raise one thing at a time: more distance, then a mild distraction, then a busier hour
- 05
Count first-call responses; ten in a row earns a short stretch with the line dropped
- 06
Pick the line back up after any miss and make the next call easier
Town rules
Essex licenses dogs by March 31 at Town Hall, 30 Martin Street, and has no leash law
Every Essex dog must be licensed by March 31 each year. At the time of writing the town lists $15 for a spayed or neutered dog and $24 for an intact dog, with a $15 late fee after March 31. You can register online and have the license and tag mailed, send the registration form with a current rabies certificate and a check payable to the Town of Essex, or visit Town Hall at 30 Martin Street with the certificate and a check or cash; cards are not taken at the counter.
The leash rule is simple: Essex does not have one, and dogs may roam unless the town deems them a nuisance. The rules that do exist are about places. Dogs are barred from every public park except Centennial Grove, and the beaches and the Grove are closed to them in June, July and August. Questions go to the Town Clerk's office at 978-768-7111. Bring your Essex license to our free evaluation with the Rabies, DHPP and Bordetella records.
- Due March 31: $15 spayed or neutered, $24 intact
- Late fee: $15 after March 31
- No leash law; a nuisance dog is the exception
- Public beaches and Centennial Grove: no dogs June to August
After the stay
After the stay: coaching at Eastern Ave, then private sessions or Canine Campus
The program finishes with coaching at Dogtown rather than a quick handover. Foundation includes one go-home lesson; Advanced includes two scheduled coaching lessons. You watch the trainer work each cue, then take the leash yourself while your timing and rewards are corrected. Bring every person who walks or feeds the dog, since cues only survive in a house where everyone uses the same words and the same rules.
Off-leash life is the reason to keep going in Essex. Private sessions from $94 can target the one skill that slips, such as a recall at the Grove in September. Canine Campus keeps a dog in structured day training for longer while it sleeps at home: Freshman lasts two weeks, Dean's List four and Graduate six, with pick-up and drop-off, daily reports, homework and an end-of-program lesson. Dogtown Academy, $89 for a full day or $69 for a half, puts a session with our trainer inside a play day.
