Is there a waitlist for board and train?

Availability is the one question no page can answer for your dates. What this page can do is explain what limits a board and train calendar, lay out the Cape Ann year season by season, and show what to have ready so a cancellation can reach you.

The short version

Whether a waitlist is running is confirmed when you inquire, because capacity is trainer time

A board and train dog needs a suite, but it also needs several short training blocks a day, a daily update and one or two go-home lessons at the end. We do not print a number of places, because it changes with the dates and the dogs booked. When you send the training form, the team tells you whether your dates are open, offers nearby dates if not, and says whether a cancellation list is being kept for that stretch.

Your own calendar is part of the capacity. The go-home lesson, or both coaching lessons for Advanced, happens at 210 Eastern Ave with you holding the leash, inside a pick-up window. A week that suits the training calendar but lands the lesson on the day you fly home is not really an open week, so bring your fixed dates to the first conversation.

  • Trainer time for daily blocks and updates
  • A suite for every night of the stay
  • A go-home lesson date you can make
  • The free evaluation done on a weekday morning first

The Cape Ann year

Demand follows the Cape Ann calendar, so plan backward from the season you need

We do not publish lead times, but the local calendar explains when families tend to need cover. Summer brings seasonal residents and family trips, and the holiday weeks bring travel of their own. The off-season months are also when Gloucester's beaches reopen to dogs, which makes them useful for practice after a stay. The table pairs each stretch of the year with what it means for a booking, from licenses to fireworks.

Two local dates deserve care for a first night away. Gloucester's fireworks fall on July 3, hard on a noise-sensitive dog, and winter nor'easters can close roads with little warning, so check the National Weather Service in Boston before a January or February drop-off. If the week you want is taken, the next section shows how to be ready when a gap appears.

Being ready

To use a cancellation, have everything a booking needs done before the gap appears

A freed week is only useful to a family that can take it at short notice. That means the assessment done, the evaluation passed and the paperwork current, so the new dates can be confirmed in one conversation rather than four. If those steps are still to do when a date opens, the gap may close before they are finished, so do them early even if your first choice of week is taken.

Tell us how flexible you are. A family that can take any week in a two-month stretch, or either program, is easier to fit than one with a single possible week. Say whether a weekday or Saturday drop-off suits; Sunday windows, 8 to 10 AM and 4 to 6 PM, are for overnight guests, so ask whether a program can start on one.

  1. 01

Send the training form with a range of dates, not one week

  2. 02

Complete the assessment so the program and quote are settled

  3. 03

Pass the free evaluation on a weekday between 6:30 and 9:30 AM

  4. 04

Keep Rabies, DHPP, Bordetella and the license current

  5. 05

Ask whether a cancellation list is kept, and how you would hear

  6. 06

Note the go-home lesson dates you could make

Plan B

If the stay you want is full, book the care now and the training later, or train without nights away

When a trip is fixed and the training can wait, an ordinary overnight stay covers the dates: $78 a night in a suite, with playgroups by day and 24/7 monitoring. A board and train can follow once a week opens and you are home to take the go-home lesson. Add the Pup Van for $10 each way if you live in Rockport, Gloucester, Essex or Manchester-by-the-Sea.

If the training is the goal rather than cover for a trip, a day program is another route worth asking about. Canine Campus runs 2, 4 or 6 weeks of day training with pick-up and drop-off, the dog home each night. Dogtown Academy days, $89 full or $69 half, include a training session every day, and private sessions start from $94. Our board and train page explains both stays if you want to compare them first.

  • Trip fixed, training can wait: an overnight stay at $78 a night
  • Training is the goal: Canine Campus or Academy days
  • Coaching on a budget: private sessions from $94
  • Board and train later, once a week opens

Other ways in while you wait

Overnight stays cover the trip, and Academy days or Canine Campus keep training moving while a board and train week opens.

Asked and answered

Questions people ask about this

Short, complete answers you can act on today. More in the full FAQ.

How long is the board and train waitlist?
There is no standing list with a length we can quote. When you inquire, we tell you whether your dates are open and whether a cancellation list is being kept for that stretch. Summer and the holiday weeks are when families most often need cover, so start earliest for those.
Why don't you publish how many board and train places you have?
Because the number changes with the dates and each dog's plan, and a printed figure would soon be wrong. A printed number would mislead you. Ask when you inquire how many dogs will be training alongside yours, and we will tell you.
Can I join a cancellation list before my dog's evaluation?
Ask when you inquire. Being ready matters more than being early: a family with the assessment and evaluation done can take a freed week in one conversation. The evaluation runs on weekday mornings between 6:30 and 9:30 AM by appointment, so book it as soon as the program is chosen.
When should I inquire about a Thanksgiving or Christmas stay?
In early fall. Whether a stay can run over Thanksgiving week or across Christmas and New Year is confirmed at the consult, and holiday hours are announced each year in the Dogtown app and at the front desk. Starting in September leaves room for the assessment and a weekday-morning evaluation.
