Can I call during the board and train stay?

Most families want to check in during a stay, and most check-ins can be handled without pulling a trainer out of a session. This page sets out which channel suits which question, which response times Dogtown publishes, and what to settle before drop-off.

The channels

Phone, app messages, email and the training form all reach Dogtown, and each suits a different question

The phone is for anything that cannot wait: a change of plan today, a new medical detail, a delay at pick-up. App messages reach the front desk and keep the whole conversation in one place, which suits questions about an update or a note for the trainer. Email suits documents, such as a vet's letter or an updated prescription label. The training form is for the programs themselves, before or after the stay, and it is the one channel with a published reply time.

Calls to the desk do not disturb your dog. What they can interrupt is a trainer mid-session, which is why a training question usually gets a fuller answer in writing: the front desk passes it on, and the reply can sit next to that day's update. The table sets out each channel, when it is answered as far as Dogtown publishes, and what it is best for.

Call or message

Call when timing matters; message when the answer can come with the next update

A simple rule covers most situations. If the answer changes what happens to your dog today, call. If it changes how you understand the training, message. Calling is right when your flight is delayed and pick-up will move, when your vet changes a dose, when you realize you forgot to mention an allergy, or when something in an update genuinely worries you. Everything else, from a question about a cue to a request for a particular clip, reads better in writing.

Writing also helps you later. The go-home lesson goes faster when your questions and the answers already sit in one thread, and a record of what you asked tells the trainer what matters to your household. If you are traveling, mention the time difference in your first message, so the desk knows when a reply will find you awake, and name a local contact who can answer for you if the signal drops.

  • Call: pick-up plans change today
  • Call: a dose, an allergy or a health detail was missed
  • Call: an update genuinely worries you
  • Message: a question about a skill or a cue
  • Message: a request for a particular photo or clip

After hours

Settle the after-hours plan and a backup contact before drop-off

Overnight, board and train dogs sleep in suites with 24/7 monitoring. What this site does not publish is how an owner reaches Dogtown after hours, or how you would be contacted if your dog needed a vet at night, so ask about both at the consult and have the answers before you pay. Name a backup contact who lives nearby and can make decisions if you are on a plane or out of signal.

The AVMA's travel brochure tells owners to carry three emergency numbers whenever a pet travels: its veterinarian, a national poison control hotline and a 24-hour emergency hospital at the destination. The same list belongs on your instructions sheet for a stay on Cape Ann. Massachusetts Veterinary Referral Hospital in Woburn is open 24 hours, and Gloucester publishes a list of local emergency veterinary offices, so put your own vet's after-hours number next to them.

Response times

One reply time is published; agree the others at the consult and follow up when they pass

Dogtown publishes one response time: training enquiries on the contact form get a reply within one hour on business days. Phone calls are answered in opening hours. How fast app messages and email are answered during a stay is not published, so ask at the consult what to expect and write the answer down. Knowing it in advance turns a quiet afternoon from a worry into an ordinary wait.

If something urgent has no reply within the time you were given, call rather than sending a second message. On Sundays, when the building opens only for overnight-stay drop-off and pick-up from 8 to 10 AM and 4 to 6 PM, ask how messages are handled. For everything else, the daily update remains the main way you hear about your dog's training, and it is worth reading before you reach for the phone.

Asked and answered

Questions people ask about this

Short, complete answers you can act on today. More in the full FAQ.

Can I speak to the trainer directly during the stay?
Ask at the consult. The front desk passes questions to the training team, and a written question usually gets the fullest answer. If a conversation would help, for example before the second week of Advanced, ask whether a call with the trainer can be scheduled. You will talk in person at the go-home lesson.
Can I call on a Sunday?
Sunday is closed for daycare at Dogtown, and the building opens only for overnight-stay drop-off and pick-up, 8 to 10 AM and 4 to 6 PM. Ask at the consult how Sunday calls and messages are handled during a stay, and keep weekday or Saturday hours for anything that is not urgent.
Will my calls upset my dog's training?
No. Calls go to the front desk, not to your dog, and the desk passes on what the trainer needs. Whether a video call or a visit with your dog can be arranged is a separate question, confirmed at the consult, because a stay is built around a steady daily routine.
What if Dogtown calls and I miss it?
Call back during opening hours, or reply in the app if you cannot talk. This is where a named backup contact earns its place: if you are on a flight or out of signal, someone nearby can answer for you. Give the front desk that person's name and number at drop-off.
