Puppy board and train

Puppy board and train in Gloucester, MA

A puppy learns fast and forgets fast, and a week away lands in the middle of the most formative months of its life. This page covers when a stay makes sense for a young dog, when it does not, and what the week does differently for a puppy.

Age and paperwork

We set the starting age at the consult, because vaccines and fear periods decide it

Some board and train programs set a floor of six months of age, and one Massachusetts program we checked in October 2026 states it outright. Dogtown's Foundation week is written for puppies and young dogs, and we confirm the youngest age we take for a stay at the training consult rather than printing one number. The answer depends on where your puppy is in its vaccine series, how it copes with a night away from home and whether it is going through a fear period when you want to book.

Paperwork follows the same logic. Every overnight stay at Dogtown asks for Rabies, DHPP and Bordetella on file, a current city dog license and a free evaluation on a weekday morning between 6:30 and 9:30 AM. Massachusetts law requires a license for a dog over six months old, so a younger puppy may not have one yet. Bring your vet's record to the consult and we will tell you how the requirements apply to your puppy's dates.

Fear periods

Time the week around the socialization window and the fear periods

The AVSAB, the veterinary society for animal behavior, calls the first three months of life the primary and most important time for puppy socialization, the stretch when sociability outweighs fear. The AKC's trainers place a first fear period at roughly 8 to 11 weeks and a second somewhere between 6 and 14 months, earlier in small breeds. A frightening experience during either can linger, so the timing of a first stay away deserves a conversation, not just the next open week on the calendar.

In practice this cuts both ways. A confident puppy past its first fear period can gain a great deal from a structured week of gentle new experiences. A puppy that has just started startling at the vacuum, hiding from visitors or balking at a familiar walk may be in a fear period, and a week of novelty is the wrong medicine. Tell us what you see at the consult; Gabby would rather move the dates than push a puppy through them.

  • Startling at sounds or objects that never bothered it before
  • Hiding from visitors, or refusing a walk it used to love
  • Turning down food in new places
  • Clinging to you after a small surprise

The puppy week

A puppy's Foundation week means shorter blocks, more sleep and gentler firsts

The skill list is the Foundation list, but a puppy's week is built differently. Training blocks last a few minutes, because a young brain tires quickly, and naps are part of the plan rather than a gap in it. House manners lean on routine: the same toilet spot, the same settle after play, the crate paired with a chew and quiet until it becomes the place the puppy chooses. Marker training does most of the teaching, with food doing the persuading.

Daycare integration for a puppy means matched play, not a crowd. Dogtown's playgroups are 7 to 10 dogs matched by size and temperament, and a puppy joins only once Gabriella Pope judges it ready, ideally alongside steady adult dogs that model good manners. Enrichment fills the gaps with sniffing and problem-solving, such as a lick mat or a puzzle feeder, which tires a young dog without overloading it.

  2. 02

A toilet break in the same spot, rewarded the moment it happens

  3. 03

Rest in the suite with a chew, so the crate stays a calm place

  4. 04

  5. 05

Some puppies are better served by puppy school before any stay

A stay is not the only way to start, and for the youngest puppies it is often not the best. Tiny Tails Puppy School takes pups from 8 to 16 weeks in 4, 6 or 8 week programs, and AKC S.T.A.R. Puppy runs 6 weeks and 12 sessions for puppies from 8 weeks to 6 months. In both, the puppy sleeps at home and you learn alongside it, through the very socialization window the AVSAB describes.

Bright Beginnings, from 4 months, covers everyday manners and social skills, and Brave & Balanced, also from 4 months, is for shy pups that need confidence before anything else. A puppy that is wary of strangers, unsure in new places or distressed when left alone should start in one of those, with you there. Foundation is the right week for the outgoing puppy in a household short of time, not for a puppy still deciding whether the world is safe.

  • 8 to 16 weeks: Tiny Tails Puppy School, 4, 6 or 8 weeks
  • 8 weeks to 6 months: AKC S.T.A.R. Puppy, 6 weeks and 12 sessions
  • From 4 months and shy: Brave & Balanced
  • From 4 months, outgoing and short on manners: Bright Beginnings or the Foundation week

After the week

The first month home decides how much of the week your puppy keeps

Puppies show the biggest change at pick-up and lose it fastest if the household relaxes. The go-home lesson gives you the cues, rewards and routine your puppy has been living with; keep them identical for the first weeks, down to the word you use for the crate. Several short sessions a day beat one long one. The daily updates from the stay tell you which skills were solid by the end and which were still brand new.

Cape Ann offers a puppy good next steps. The Pup Van runs to Dogtown Academy days for $10 each way from Rockport, Gloucester, Essex and Manchester-by-the-Sea, and every Academy day includes a training session with our trainer. Once your vet is happy, quiet off-season beaches make a fine classroom: Good Harbor takes dogs off leash on even-numbered days from October 1 to March 31, and Wingaersheek on odd-numbered days through April 30.

Asked and answered

Questions people ask about this

Short, complete answers you can act on today. More in the full FAQ.

What is the youngest age for puppy board and train at Dogtown?
We confirm it at the training consult rather than print one number, because the right age depends on the puppy's vaccine record, whether it is in a fear period and how it copes away from home. The Foundation week is the stay a puppy would do. If yours is very young, Tiny Tails Puppy School, for pups 8 to 16 weeks, may be the better first step.
Does my puppy need all its vaccines before the stay?
Every overnight stay at Dogtown asks for Rabies, DHPP and Bordetella on file, a current city dog license and the free evaluation. Massachusetts requires a license for dogs over six months, so a younger puppy's paperwork can look different. Bring your vet's record to the consult and we will explain how the requirements apply to your puppy's dates.
Will my puppy forget me after a week away?
A week is not long enough to undo a puppy's bond with its family. What can slip is the new routine, if home runs differently from the stay. That is why the go-home lesson hands you the exact cues, rewards and schedule your puppy used all week, and why the first evenings back should look as much like the stay as you can manage.
Is board and train or puppy school better for a first puppy?
For most first puppies, puppy school, because you learn alongside the dog and the puppy sleeps at home through its socialization window. Board and train suits an outgoing puppy in a household that is short of time or travelling, and it still ends with a go-home lesson. Gabriella Pope will say plainly at the consult which one fits your puppy.
How much is puppy board and train?
It is priced like every Dogtown program: quoted after a short assessment with Gabriella Pope. Training sessions start from $94. Puppy school and AKC S.T.A.R. Puppy are also confirmed at the assessment, so you can weigh the options side by side before choosing. Send the training form; we reply within one hour on business days.
