Board and train cost on the North Shore, MA: how Dogtown quotes it and what is included

Cost is the question most people ask first and most programs answer last. This page sets out what we publish, what we do not yet publish, what each stay includes and what other Massachusetts programs charge, so you can compare like with like.

What we publish

We publish the from-price and the inclusions; the program price follows an assessment

Here is what is fixed and public today. Dogtown training sessions start from $94. Board and train comes in two lengths, Foundation for one week and Advanced for two, and what each contains is in the table below. What we do not print is a package price for either stay. Like every Dogtown training program, board and train is quoted after a short assessment with Gabriella Pope, Director of Training & Canine Behaviorist, because the plan is written for the individual dog.

We know that makes comparison harder for you. To get the figure, send the training form; the training team replies within one hour on business days, and the assessment comes next. When you have the quote, ask about deposit, cancellation and what happens if the dog needs more time, so you can set it beside any other program on equal terms. Everything around the stay that is already priced on our site is listed further down this page.

The Massachusetts range

Published Massachusetts programs run from $999 to $4,888, and the extras differ

Few board and train programs in the state print a price, but some do, and they reward a close read. In October 2026 we found a Boston-area program listing two weeks at $999, three at $1,499 and four at $2,499. A program west of Boston listed $4,888 for a three-week minimum stay for dogs over six months, with a $750 non-refundable deposit. A third, south of Boston, charged $800 for each additional week.

The headline figure rarely tells the whole story. The three-week program includes a remote collar in its price, and the program south of Boston adds an e-collar at $199 to $329 on top. Those are tools a force-free program does not use, so they are not a cost you would meet at Dogtown, but they show why a weekly figure only compares once you know the method, the equipment, the deposit and how many owner lessons come afterward.

  • Price per week, and the minimum length the program requires
  • Deposits, and whether they are refundable
  • Equipment sold or included, and what it is
  • How many owner lessons come with the stay
  • Whether the dog sleeps in a facility, a kennel run or a trainer's home

What moves the price

Length, coaching and the dog's needs move a board and train price more than anything else

Length is the first lever everywhere. Dogtown's two lengths sit at the short end of what Massachusetts programs offered at the time of writing, where two to four weeks is common and some insist on three. A shorter stay is not a discount on a longer one; it is a different job. One week lays foundations for a puppy or young dog. Two weeks adds proofing against real distractions for an adolescent.

Owner coaching is the second lever and the one most often thin in a low quote. Foundation includes one go-home lesson and Advanced two scheduled coaching lessons. The third lever is the dog: a young dog with missing manners is a different plan from an adolescent that needs outings and neutrality work. Dogs whose needs go beyond manners, such as reactivity or fear, are usually better served by a program built from sessions, like React Less, Relax More at 16.

  • Length: one week for foundations, two for real-world reliability
  • Coaching: one go-home lesson, or two scheduled coaching lessons
  • The dog: manners and distraction, or a behavior problem that needs another program

Which to choose

Choose by your household's time and your dog's problem, not the lowest weekly figure

The household with no spare evenings and a young dog with no manners: Foundation is the efficient route, provided you attend the go-home lesson and practice afterward. The household with an adolescent that falls apart outdoors: Advanced, because the second week and the second coaching lesson are where reliability gets built. The household on a tight budget with time to practice: private sessions from $94, or Dogtown Academy days at $89 full or $69 half, each with a training session.

The household with a reactive, fearful or anxious dog: none of the stays first. A Level 3 program such as Focus & Flow, 6 weeks and 12 sessions, or React Less, Relax More, 8 weeks and 16, puts you on the leash while the feeling changes. And the household that wants daily training without nights away: Canine Campus, from Freshman at two weeks to Graduate at six, with pick-up, drop-off and the dog home every evening.

Around the stay

On Cape Ann the extras around a stay are published: a free evaluation and a $10 Pup Van

Several costs around a stay are already on our price list. The evaluation that comes before any overnight is free, on weekday mornings between 6:30 and 9:30 AM. The Pup Van collects and returns dogs for $10 each way in Rockport, Gloucester, Essex and Manchester-by-the-Sea; outside those towns, ask us for pricing. Enrichment add-ons, from a $5 lick mat to a $10 treadmill session, can be booked onto overnight days.

A bath before pick-up starts at $55 for a dog up to 25 pounds and a full service groom at $75, rising by size, because grooming can be booked during an overnight stay. For families driving to Eastern Ave from beyond Cape Ann, the hidden cost is often time, so ask how the coaching lessons are scheduled before you book and plan them like appointments.

Asked and answered

Questions people ask about this

Short, complete answers you can act on today. More in the full FAQ.

How much is board and train at Dogtown?
We quote it after a short assessment with Gabriella Pope rather than publishing a package price, the same as every Dogtown training program. Training sessions start from $94. Foundation is one week and Advanced two, and both include the nights, daily training, daily updates and go-home coaching. Send the training form for a figure; we reply within one hour on business days.
Why don't you list a board and train price like some programs do?
Because the plan, and so the trainer time, is set for each dog after the assessment. We accept that a published number is easier to compare, which is why this page lists exactly what each stay includes and what published Massachusetts programs charge. Ask for your quote with the terms attached so you can lay it beside theirs.
What costs extra on top of a stay?
Some optional extras are on our published price list: enrichment add-ons from $5 to $10, a bath before pick-up from $55 or a full service groom from $75 by size, and the Pup Van at $10 each way in Rockport, Gloucester, Essex and Manchester-by-the-Sea. The evaluation is free. Ask about deposit and cancellation terms when you receive the quote.
Do I need to buy a training collar for the stay?
No remote, prong or choke collar is involved, because every Dogtown stay is trained with rewards and management alone. Bring the collar or harness your dog normally wears, its food and any medications, as for any overnight stay. The go-home coaching covers what to use at home afterward.
Can Academy days replace board and train to save money?
For manners and focus in a young dog, often they can. A Dogtown Academy day is $89 full or $69 half, with 5- and 10-packs, and every day includes a training session with our trainer. Your dog sleeps at home, so you practice alongside it. It is slower than a stay, and it is not a fix for reactivity or fear.
