Board and train for Newton, MA dog owners

Route 128 runs through Newton and ends in Gloucester about 50 miles later, which makes the trip simple to describe and long to drive. Newton also sells an off-leash permit that only makes sense for a dog under voice control. This page covers the drive, the permit, two parks to practice in and what follows the stay.

Why make the trip

A force-free stay is worth 70 minutes on Route 128 when you want daily training done without force

Newton families have trainers nearer home, so the reasons to drive to Gloucester need to be specific. The first is method: our programs are fear- and force-free, built on positive reinforcement, and no prong, choke or shock collar is used. The second is format. Your dog lives here for one week of Foundation or two weeks of Advanced and trains every day, while you drive only a handful of times. The third is the setting, an overnight suite with 24/7 monitoring and daycare playgroups of 7 to 10 dogs once your dog is ready for them.

The trade-off is distance, and we would rather say it plainly. Weekly sessions at Dogtown would mean well over two hours in the car each time, so a stay concentrates the work into a block you can plan around. Foundation suits puppies, young dogs and missing manners. Advanced is for the adolescent whose sit vanishes the moment a squirrel appears, and it adds distraction proofing, real-world outings and neutrality. Gabriella Pope assesses your dog first and recommends one, and the stay is quoted after that assessment.

The drive

Newton to Eastern Ave is one highway: Route 128 north for about 50 miles

Get onto Route 128 in Newton, where it shares its lanes with I-95, and head north past Waltham, Lexington and Burlington. When I-95 leaves for New Hampshire in Peabody, stay on Route 128 toward Gloucester, past Danvers and Beverly. The highway ends in Gloucester at Eastern Avenue; turn toward Rockport and we are about a mile along at number 210. By our estimate the trip is about 70 minutes outside rush hour, almost all of it on the one road.

Route 128 is also the commuter road for most of the trip, so rush hour can add a great deal. Plan around our drop-off and pick-up times: weekdays 6:30 to 9:30 AM, 12 to 1 PM and 4 to 6:30 PM, Saturdays 8 to 10 AM, 12 to 1 PM and 4 to 6 PM. The free evaluation is a weekday appointment between 6:30 and 9:30 AM that includes a few supervised hours in a group, so expect to collect your dog later that day. Newton lies outside the Pup Van towns, so ask us about pick-up.

Practice in Newton

Practice at Cold Spring Park and Cabot Park, two of Newton's eight off-leash areas

Newton allows leashed dogs anywhere in its parks except inside tot lots and Little League fields, and it runs eight off-leash areas for dogs wearing the city's off-leash medallion. Cold Spring Park is the larger, wooded choice; the parks department sends off-leash users in by the Duncklee Street or Plymouth Road entrances. Cabot Park, at Newtonville Avenue and East Side Parkway, is one of the four fully fenced areas, which makes it the safer first test of a recall once your dog is home.

The city's rules describe the dog a board and train is aiming for. Keep your dog leashed until you are inside the designated area, keep the leash on hand, and keep your dog in sight and under voice control, which the city defines as a dog that responds to and obeys your verbal commands. Off-leash hours are suspended when there are Park Closed signs, wet fields, work crews or a permitted event, and a dog must be six months old to be off leash at all.

  1. 01

Start in the fenced Cabot Park area, leash on until the gate is shut

  2. 02

Call once from a few steps away, and pay at your feet

  3. 03

Release your dog back to play, so coming to you never ends the fun

  4. 04

Move to Cold Spring Park's off-leash area at a quiet hour, on a long line

  5. 05

Drop the line only after a run of first-call recalls; pick it up after any miss

  6. 06

Leave early if a crew, an event or wet ground suspends off-leash time

Newton rules

Newton's City Clerk licenses dogs by April 1: $20 or $25, or $70 or $75 with the off-leash permit

Every Newton dog six months or older must be licensed each year, with registration opening in March and due by April 1. At the time of writing the City Clerk offers two options: a standard license at $20 for a spayed or neutered dog and $25 for one that is not, or a license with the off-leash permit included, at $70 and $75. Apply online, by mail or in person at City Hall, 1000 Commonwealth Avenue, with proof of a current rabies vaccination; card payments carry a small service charge. The city moved to a new registration site for the 2026-27 cycle, so expect to set up a new account.

The permit takes the form of a medallion your dog wears in the off-leash areas, along with its license tag and identification. Professional dog walkers need a separate Newton permit, and one walker's medallion covers three dogs at a time. On leash, Newton is generous: dogs may walk in any city park except inside tot lots and Little League fields, and the waste goes in the blue barrels. For the stay, bring your Newton license with the Rabies, DHPP and Bordetella records to the free evaluation.

  • Due April 1: $20 spayed or neutered, $25 not
  • With the off-leash permit: $70 or $75, license included
  • Off leash: the medallion, voice control and a dog at least six months old
  • On leash: any park except tot lots and Little League fields

After the stay

Back on Route 128 after the coaching: what follows a Newton stay

Every program closes with coaching for the family at Dogtown: one go-home lesson after Foundation, two scheduled coaching lessons with Advanced. The trainer shows you each cue and reward, watches you run them and corrects the small things, the timing of a treat or where your hand sits on the leash. Schedule the lessons away from the evening commute if you can, because a lesson after a slow crawl up 128 is a lesson spent tired.

Home visits are not something we publish, so ask the front desk; the follow-up we do publish happens in Gloucester. Private sessions start from $94, and one well-timed session can rescue a recall that held in the fenced park and fell apart at Cold Spring. Canine Campus, our hybrid program of 2, 4 or 6 weeks, includes pick-up and drop-off, but only where that pick-up reaches your address; from Newton, ask before you plan on it. Most families this far away keep going with what the coaching showed them and a regular practice slot each week.

Asked and answered

Questions people ask about this

Short, complete answers you can act on today. More in the full FAQ.

Will board and train prepare my dog for Newton's off-leash permit?
It builds the skills the permit assumes. Newton describes voice control as a dog that responds to and obeys your verbal commands, and both Foundation and Advanced work on recall, stay and impulse control, with Advanced adding distraction proofing. Whether to buy the $70 or $75 permit, and when to unclip, stays your decision after practice in a fenced area such as Cabot Park.
How long is the drive from Newton to Dogtown?
About 70 minutes outside rush hour, by our estimate, nearly all of it on Route 128 north, which runs from Newton to its end in Gloucester. Turn onto Eastern Avenue there, and our building is about a mile along. The commute can stretch the trip badly, so the 12 to 1 PM weekday window is often the easiest for drop-off and pick-up.
Can the Pup Van collect my dog in Newton?
The van's set route covers Rockport, Gloucester, Essex and Manchester-by-the-Sea, at $10 each way, and Newton is well outside it. Ask us about pick-up when you send the training form, and plan to drive in for the evaluation and drop-off. The last day is yours in any case, because the coaching that ends the stay takes place at Dogtown.
Do we need a Newton license before the stay?
Yes, a current one. We ask for the license from your own city, so a Newton dog brings its City Clerk license, standard or with the off-leash permit, to the free evaluation along with Rabies, DHPP and Bordetella records. Newton licenses are due by April 1 and need proof of a current rabies vaccination.
Can the trainer come to Newton for a follow-up?
Home visits are not on our published menu for Newton; ask the front desk. Follow-up happens at Dogtown: private sessions start from $94, and the go-home and coaching lessons are held at our building. Tell Gabby at the consult which Newton situations worry you most, such as the walk past a busy playground, so the lessons can cover them.
