Maintaining recall

How to maintain recall after board and train

A recall built during a stay is new, and new recalls are fragile. Every time your dog ignores the cue and gets away with it, the cue loses value. Maintenance is mostly about not letting that happen: the line stays on until it is boring, and the off-leash places change with the Cape Ann calendar.

Before you start

Before you start, decide which cue is the recall and protect it from anything unpleasant

Use the recall cue your dog came home with, whether a word or a whistle, and give it one job. It means come all the way to me, now, and it always pays. Never use it to end a game, to start a bath, to clip the leash on before the car or to call the dog in for a telling-off. For those moments, walk over and collect the dog. A recall that sometimes predicts bad news is a recall the dog learns to weigh up.

Gather the kit. A 20- to 30-foot long line, clipped to a well-fitted harness rather than a collar, and gloves if the line will run through your hands. Food your dog rates above anything the beach or the woods can offer, in a pouch you can reach in one movement. And a note of the rules for the places you plan to use, since Gloucester's dog regulations say a dog must always remain under the control of its owner or keeper, leash or no leash.

  • One recall cue, used only for good news
  • A 20- to 30-foot line on a harness
  • Food better than anything the outing offers

The steps

Seven steps take a recall from the long line in your hand to legal off-leash ground

The steps move the dog through four stages: line in hand, line dragging, a fenced space and open legal ground. Stay at each stage until first-call recalls feel routine there, which takes days for some dogs and weeks for others. If two recalls in a session fail, go back a stage for the rest of the week. The line is not a punishment and not a reel; it is what stops a missed recall from turning into a lesson in ignoring you.

The fenced stage is easy to find in Gloucester. The city's parks page notes a dog park in the Stage Fort Park parking lot, and the Gloucester Dog Park is a fenced off-leash space with separate areas for small and large dogs; at a quiet hour it lets you practice recalls with a safety net. Everywhere else in Stage Fort Park the same page requires dogs to be leashed, and it keeps dogs off the park's beaches entirely, whatever the season.

  1. 01

Pay every recall: for the first month, every return earns food, a game or a release back to sniffing.

  2. 02

Line in hand: on every unfenced walk, keep the dog on a 20- to 30-foot line clipped to a harness.

  3. 03

Call only on a sure thing: wait for a lull, call once, and walk over to collect the dog if the moment is wrong.

  4. 04

Line dragging: once first-call recalls are routine, drop the line and let it trail where you can step on it.

  5. 05

Fenced space: run the same recalls off leash in a fenced area such as the Gloucester Dog Park at a quiet hour.

  6. 06

Legal open ground by season: choose the beach or trail whose rule allows off-leash dogs on that date.

  7. 07

Keep a few in every outing: three to five paid recalls per walk, each followed by a release back to fun.

By season

Where off-leash practice is legal changes with the season, so plan the year around the calendar

Cape Ann's off-leash calendar is generous in winter and tight in summer. At the time of writing, Gloucester bans dogs from Good Harbor from April 1 and from Wingaersheek, Plum Cove, Cressy and its other public beaches from May 1, through September 30, with fines of $300 per violation, doubled in season. Crab Beach is the exception, open to off-leash dogs all year under the city's conditions. Rockport keeps dogs off every public beach from June 1 to September 15.

Inland ground fills the summer gap. The Trustees list Ravenswood Park in Gloucester among their reservations that allow off-leash dog walking, though their guidelines exclude grassland nesting habitat from April 1 to August 15 and keep dogs out of resource protection areas. Farther up the North Shore, Crane Beach in Ipswich allows off-leash dogs only in marked zones from October 1 to March 31. Rules change, so check each page on the morning you go.

Mistakes we see

Recalls fade when the line comes off early, the cue gets repeated and coming back ends the fun

The commonest slip is unclipping the line too soon. Two good weekends and the dog runs free on an open beach, a dog or a gull appears, and the recall is tested at the one moment it cannot pass yet. Repeating the cue is the next problem; a dog called five times learns that the first four do not count. Call once, then use the line or walk over, and make the next call an easier one.

The quieter mistake is making the recall expensive for the dog. If every recall ends the walk, the play or the swim, the dog learns to keep its distance near the end of an outing. Call the dog in, pay it and send it off again many times per walk, so that coming back usually means more freedom, not less. And keep the line on near any road or parking lot; no recall is a safe bet beside traffic.

  • Unclipping after a few good outings
  • Repeating the cue louder and louder
  • Calling only to end the fun
  • Going off leash near a road or a parking lot

When to call us

Call us when the recall works on the line but fails the moment it comes off

That gap is normal, and it usually means a stage was skipped or the reward is not strong enough for the place. Send a note through the Dogtown app describing where the recall fails and what the dog went after instead, or book a private session, from $94, so a trainer can watch the handover from line to freedom. A recall that fails around other dogs or wildlife every time is worth a session before the next off-leash trip.

For a structured goal, Canine Citizen Academy prepares adolescents and adults for the AKC Canine Good Citizen test, which includes coming when called, in 4, 6 or 8 weeks. Dogtown Academy days, $89 full or $69 half, keep a trainer in the week, and every Academy day includes a training session. Our board and train page explains how Foundation builds a recall and how Advanced proofs it against distraction.

Asked and answered

Questions people ask about this

Short, complete answers you can act on today. More in the full FAQ.

How long should the long line stay on after board and train?
Longer than feels necessary. Keep it in hand until first-call recalls are routine on your usual walks, then let it drag for several more weeks before you try a fenced area off leash. If a recall fails twice in one session, put the line back in your hand for a few days and make the calls easier.
Where can my dog run off leash near Gloucester in summer?
Fewer places than in winter. At the time of writing, Gloucester's public beaches are closed to dogs from May 1 to September 30 (Good Harbor from April 1), apart from Crab Beach, and Rockport's from June 1 to September 15. The fenced dog park at Stage Fort Park and Ravenswood Park, which The Trustees list for off-leash walking, are the main options. Check each page before you go.
Is the Gloucester Dog Park good for recall practice?
Yes, at a quiet hour. A fenced space lets you practice off leash with a safety net. When the park is busy, other dogs make recalls very hard, so go early or late and leave if the play gets intense. The rest of Stage Fort Park requires a leash, and dogs are not allowed on its beaches.
Should I call my dog to put the leash on?
Not with the recall cue. Call, pay and release the dog a few times during the outing, then walk over calmly to clip the leash at the end. If coming when called always means the fun is over, the dog learns to hover just out of reach for the last ten minutes of every walk.
My dog's recall was great at Dogtown. Why not at the beach?
The beach is a far harder place than a building or a turf yard: wind, smells, birds, other dogs and open space. A recall needs rebuilding in each new kind of place, starting on the line with easy calls. Treat the beach as a new stage of training, not a test of the old one.
