Board and train for Brookline, MA dog owners
Brookline's Green Dog Program opens 14 park areas to off-leash dogs at set hours, most of them early in the morning, and only for dogs under sight and voice control. Voice control is trainable, and a stay is one way to build it. This page covers why Brookline families make the long drive, the route, two Green Dog parks and the follow-up.
- Getting to Eastern Ave
- Harvard Street or Beacon Street to Storrow Drive, Route 1 north over the Tobin Bridge, then Route 128 north to its end and Eastern Avenue: about 65 minutes outside rush hour, by our estimate
- The Pup Van
- Outside the Pup Van towns; ask us about pick-up
- Dog licensing
- Town Clerk, Town Hall, 333 Washington Street, Room 104: calendar-year license for dogs 4 months and older, $20, plus $20 if issued on or after March 31 (brooklinema.gov)
- The beach rule
- Larz Anderson Park, Newton Street (Green Dog): off leash only at the top of the hill, Avon Street side, dawn to 1 PM March to November and dawn to dusk December to February; Green Dog tag required (brooklinema.gov)

Why Gloucester
Why Brookline families book a stay an hour away: the method, the building and a fixed end date
Most Brookline families looking at board and train have options closer to home, so a stay in Gloucester has to earn the drive. We think it does in three cases. You want a program with no corrective equipment: ours is fear- and force-free, built on positive reinforcement, with no prong, choke or shock collar. You want your dog to sleep in a building staffed for dogs, in an overnight suite with 24/7 monitoring. And you want a fixed block of daily training, one week or two, rather than months of weekly sessions.
If none of those matters to you, a trainer nearer Brookline may be the more practical choice, and we would rather say so. If they do, the stay works on exactly what the Green Dog parks test. Foundation builds recall, stay, place and impulse control on top of leash skills; Advanced adds distraction proofing, real-world outings and neutrality, so your dog can ignore a ball game at the edge of the field. Daycare integration, in playgroups of 7 to 10 matched by size and temperament, gives that practice real dogs to work around.
- No prong, choke or shock collar in either program
- An overnight suite with 24/7 monitoring
- One week or two, with a daily update to you
- Coaching for the family at the end, at Dogtown
The drive
Brookline to Eastern Ave: Storrow Drive, the Tobin Bridge and Route 128, about 65 minutes
From Coolidge Corner, take Harvard Street or Beacon Street toward the river and pick up Storrow Drive east, then follow the signs for Route 1 north over the Tobin Bridge. Route 1 carries you through Chelsea, Revere and Saugus to Route 128; take 128 north, stay with it where I-95 turns off in Peabody, and ride it to its end in Gloucester. Turn onto Eastern Avenue, and number 210 is about a mile from the end of the highway. By our estimate the drive is about 65 minutes outside rush hour.
Allow far longer at rush hour, when Storrow Drive, the bridge and Route 128 can all slow at once. Drop-off and pick-up run 6:30 to 9:30 AM, 12 to 1 PM and 4 to 6:30 PM on weekdays, and 8 to 10 AM, 12 to 1 PM and 4 to 6 PM on Saturdays, so the midday window is the one that misses both commutes. Brookline is not one of the Pup Van towns, which are Rockport, Gloucester, Essex and Manchester-by-the-Sea; ask us about pick-up. Whatever the start day, come yourself for the coaching at the end.
Green Dog practice
Practice at Larz Anderson Park and Amory Playground during Green Dog hours
Larz Anderson Park on Newton Street is one of three Green Dog parks with seasonal hours. Off-leash use there runs from dawn to 1 PM from March through November and from dawn to dusk from December through February, and only at the top of the hill on the Avon Street side; dogs stay out of the children's play area, the pond, the gardens and the barbecue shelter. Amory Playground on Amory Street has a dawn-to-1 PM window, and eight other parks, Corey Hill Park among them, close to off-leash dogs at 9 AM.
The town's rules make a ready-made practice plan. Keep the leash on until you are inside the off-leash area and have checked that the hours are in effect; off-leash use stops when crews are working, when a permitted game or school activity is on, and when fields are wet or thawing, which generally means all of March. Brookline's version of voice control is the one to train toward: you should be able to call your dog back at any time and leash it immediately. A Green Dog tag, a license tag, a rabies tag and identification all go on the collar.

- 02
Walk in on leash and let your dog take in the area from the edge
- 03
Unclip, call once, reward at your feet, clip the leash on, then unclip and release
- 04
Repeat the call-and-clip five or six times in one visit
- 05
Leave before the off-leash window closes, leash on for the walk out
Brookline rules
Brookline licenses dogs for the calendar year at $20, with a $20 late fee from March 31
The Town Clerk licenses Brookline dogs from January 1 to December 31. At the time of writing every dog four months or older needs a license, the annual fee is $20, and a $20 late fee applies to licenses issued on or after March 31. The rabies vaccination must be valid on the day the license is issued. Renew online through the town's permit portal, or mail the application with a check to the Town Clerk at Town Hall, 333 Washington Street, Room 104.
Green Dog registration is an add-on to the license: tick the Green Dog option when you apply or renew, and the green tag expires at the end of December. The program is open to non-residents, and visiting dogs licensed in their hometowns can use a two-day guest permit for $5 or a one-week permit for $10 each. Dogs must be six months old to join, and the program excludes aggressive dogs both on and off leash. Bring your Brookline license and the Rabies, DHPP and Bordetella records to our free evaluation.

After the stay
After pick-up, the coaching is in Gloucester and the Green Dog mornings are yours
Foundation closes with one go-home lesson and Advanced with two scheduled coaching lessons, all held at Dogtown with you handling your own dog. The trainer demonstrates, then coaches, and the most useful thing to bring is a Brookline question: how to get a recall with a soccer practice next door, or how to clip on a leash without a game of chase. Book the lessons outside commuting hours, and bring everyone who takes the dog out in the morning.
Home visits are not on our published menu, so ask the front desk; the further help we publish is at Dogtown. Private sessions start from $94. Canine Campus, our hybrid day program with pick-up and drop-off, is built around dogs nearer Cape Ann; ask whether Campus pick-up could reach Brookline, and be ready for the answer to be no. For most Brookline families the realistic plan is the coaching, regular Green Dog practice and a private session if a skill stalls.
- One go-home lesson after Foundation; two coaching lessons with Advanced
- Every lesson at Dogtown, 210 Eastern Ave
- Private sessions from $94 when a skill stalls
- Canine Campus only if its pick-up reaches your address
