Board and train for Medford, MA dog owners
Medford's ordinance leaves little room for interpretation: off your own property, a dog is on a leash of six feet or less, and no dog may be off leash in a city park. That makes leash manners the everyday skill. This page is honest about the drive to Gloucester, then covers the route, the Fells and the Mystic River, the city's rules and the follow-up.
- Getting to Eastern Ave
- Interstate 93 north to Interstate 95, Route 128 toward Gloucester at the Peabody fork, to its end and Eastern Avenue: about 55 minutes outside rush hour, by our estimate
- The Pup Van
- Outside the Pup Van towns; ask us about pick-up
- Dog licensing
- City Clerk, City Hall, 85 George P. Hassett Drive: calendar year, register January 1 to March 15, $10 neutered or spayed, $15 intact (medfordma.org)
- The beach rule
- Medford city parks: no dogs off leash ($200 fine) and no dogs in tot lots; six-foot leash anywhere off your premises (Park Division, Code Sec. 6-38)
- A trail we know
- Middlesex Fells Reservation (DCR), South Border Road pull-offs such as Bellevue Pond: leashed except in the Sheepfold Meadow; no choke or prong collars (mass.gov)

Why a stay
Medford dogs live on a six-foot leash, so a stay that works on leash manners every day can earn the drive
Every walk a Medford dog takes off its own property is a leashed walk, and the leash may be no longer than six feet. A dog that pulls, zigzags or lunges at passing dogs makes every one of those walks harder. Foundation spends a week on basic obedience and leash skills alongside place, stay, recall, impulse control and household manners. Advanced spends two on distraction proofing, real-world outings and neutrality, which is what a city sidewalk asks of a dog.
The distance is the trade-off. Dogtown is close to an hour from Medford, so a stay suits families who want the work concentrated rather than spread across weekly drives. In return the training happens inside a full day at our building, with playgroups matched by size and temperament, enrichment and daily sessions with Gabriella Pope, and you hear from us every day. Nothing in the program relies on force, and that matters locally: the Middlesex Fells bans choke and prong collars outright.
Getting here
Interstate 93 north, Interstate 95 and Route 128 link Medford Square to Eastern Ave in about 55 minutes
Count on about 55 minutes outside rush hour, by our estimate. From Medford Square, pick up Interstate 93 north and follow it to Interstate 95, which is also signed Route 128. Head north on 95; in Peabody, Route 128 forks right toward Gloucester while 95 continues north. Ride 128 to its end, past two rotaries, then turn left onto Eastern Avenue; 210 is about a mile on, toward Rockport.
Medford is outside the Pup Van towns; ask us about pick-up for your street. If you do not drive, the Commuter Rail's Rockport branch runs to Gloucester, but the MBTA's rider rules let a larger dog that does not fit in a carrier ride only off-peak and on a leash, and staff may restrict pets in crowds. The station also sits a few miles from our building. With food and a comfort item to carry for the stay, the car is usually the simpler way to drop off.
- I-93 north to I-95, then Route 128 at the Peabody fork
- About 55 minutes outside rush hour, by our estimate
- Outside the Pup Van towns; ask us about pick-up
- MBTA: larger dogs off-peak only, on a leash
Practice spots
Practice in the Middlesex Fells from South Border Road, and along the Mystic at Torbert Macdonald Park
The Middlesex Fells Reservation is DCR land with more than 100 miles of trails, open sunrise to sunset. On the Medford side, DCR points walkers to the pull-offs along South Border Road, such as Bellevue Pond, as the best way up to Wright's Tower. Dogs stay on a leash except in the Sheepfold Meadow off-leash area, which is in Stoneham off Route 28. The Fells rules add a short list worth reading before a first visit: no choke or prong collars, current license and rabies tags, no more than four dogs per person, and no approaching other dogs or people unless invited.
Torbert Macdonald State Park, also DCR, sits on the Mystic Valley Parkway in Medford with paved and unpaved paths, views of the Mystic River, a free lot and sunrise-to-sunset hours. DCR's general rule allows a leash of up to ten feet, but Medford's six-foot limit is the one to carry everywhere in the city. Use the paved paths for loose-leash work and the river edge for a leave-it, with the water in view and your dog's attention on you.
- Fells: leashed except in the Sheepfold Meadow, in Stoneham
- Fells: no choke or prong collars; four dogs per person at most
- Torbert Macdonald: paved and unpaved paths, sunrise to sunset
- Medford city parks: always leashed, never in tot lots
City rules
Medford licenses run January to December at $10 or $15, and the leash limit is six feet anywhere off your property
The City Clerk's Office at City Hall, 85 George P. Hassett Drive, licenses every dog six months or older for the calendar year. Registration opens January 1 and runs to March 15, and later registrations may carry a fee. At the time of writing the fee is $10 for a neutered or spayed dog and $15 for an intact one, and proof of spay or neuter and the latest rabies vaccine must come with the application. One note for this fall: in October 2026 the clerk's page said online registration had closed, in-person registration remained open until November 1, 2026, and later applications would wait until December 21 for the 2027 period.
Section 6-38 of the city's ordinances treats any dog found off the premises of its owner or custodian as at large unless it is on a chain or leash no longer than six feet, and fines run from $75 for a first offense to $200 for a fourth. The Park Division adds that no dog may be off leash in a city park, with a $200 fine, and that no dog may enter a tot lot even on a leash. You must also carry a way to pick up after your dog in any public area. Bring the Medford license to Dogtown with the Rabies, DHPP and Bordetella records.
After the stay
After the stay, a week-by-week plan takes the leash skills from your own block to the Fells
The coaching at the end of the stay is at Dogtown: one go-home lesson after Foundation, two scheduled coaching lessons with Advanced. The trainer works each skill first, then coaches you through it. Ask for time on the six-foot leash itself, how to hold it, when to stop and what to reward, because that leash is the one your dog will wear on every Medford walk. Private sessions from $94 are there for anything that slips later.
For more structure without another stay, Canine Campus runs 2, 4 or 6 weeks of day training with your dog home at night, and Dogtown Academy adds a session with our trainer to a daycare day for $89, or $69 for a half day. Both mean regular trips to Gloucester, so weigh them against the drive honestly, and ask whether Campus pick-up reaches Medford before you decide.

Training, and the services behind a Medford stay
Board and train sits within Dogtown Professional Training. Daycare playgroups are part of each day of the stay, and overnight stays are there for later trips when you need care rather than training.
