Board and train for Lynnfield, MA dog owners
Lynnfield's dog bylaw is unusual: off your property, a dog that obeys spoken or hand commands counts as under control. That gives real weight to the cues a board and train builds. This page covers the stay, the single-highway drive, the bylaw and license, and two conservation areas where Lynnfield dogs can keep practicing.
- Getting to Eastern Ave
- Summer or Walnut Street to Route 128 north, staying on 128 past the I-95 split to its end in Gloucester, then Eastern Avenue; about 40 minutes outside rush hour, by our estimate
- The Pup Van
- No: Lynnfield is outside the Pup Van towns; ask us about pick-up
- Dog licensing
- Town Clerk, Town Hall, 55 Summer Street: due by March 1 for the January to December year; $10 spayed or neutered, $15 not; no charge for owners over 70 (lynnfieldma.gov; code ch. 115)
- The beach rule
- No dogs on artificial turf or any athletic playing surface; a leash on school grounds, in businesses and at public gatherings; off your property otherwise, a leash or obeyed voice and hand commands (code ch. 115)
- A trail we know
- Bow Ridge Reservation and Reedy Meadow's Partridge Island trail (town conservation land): open dawn to dusk without charge; the chapter 115 leash-or-control and pick-up rules apply (lynnfieldma.gov)

Why Lynnfield books a stay
In Lynnfield a cue your dog obeys counts as control, so a stay that builds cues is time well spent
Chapter 115 of the town code says a dog beyond its owner's property must be held firmly on a leash or be under control, and it defines control to include oral or visual commands the dog obeys. Few towns nearby put it so directly. For a Lynnfield owner the practical question is whether your dog really answers a cue when a squirrel crosses the trail, and that is the work our trainers do: place, stay and recall in Foundation, then the same skills under distraction in Advanced.
A caution belongs here too. One or two weeks of training gives a dog a strong start, not a lifetime of reliability, and a recall that holds in our yard still needs practice in Lynnfield, on a long line, before you lean on it under the bylaw. The go-home lessons show you how to keep building it. Every program is fear- and force-free and led by Gabriella Pope, our Director of Training & Canine Behaviorist, and our board and train page lays out both lengths in full.
One highway
From Lynnfield it is Route 128 north nearly the whole way: about 40 minutes to Eastern Ave
Summer Street or Walnut Street takes you to the interchange where Interstate 95 and Route 128 share the road. Head north, keep with Route 128 when I-95 leaves it in Peabody, and carry on through Danvers, Beverly and Manchester-by-the-Sea until the highway runs out in Gloucester. From the end of the highway, Eastern Avenue leads to our building at number 210. By our estimate that is about 40 minutes outside rush hour, which makes Lynnfield one of the simpler drives on this side of the North Shore.
Because the Pup Van's $10 each-way route serves only Rockport, Gloucester, Essex and Manchester-by-the-Sea, a Lynnfield family should ask us about pick-up rather than count on it. Plan the key drives together: the free evaluation on a weekday between 6:30 and 9:30 AM, the drop-off inside a window, and the go-home lesson at the end. Weekday windows run 6:30 to 9:30 AM, 12 to 1 PM and 4 to 6:30 PM, and Saturday windows 8 to 10 AM, 12 to 1 PM and 4 to 6 PM.
Where to practice
Bow Ridge for hills and ledges, Reedy Meadow for quiet: both open dawn to dusk
Bow Ridge Reservation is 74 acres of town conservation land with 1.5 miles of blazed trails, some of them steep, and a view of the whole Boston skyline from the top of the ledges. The town lists access from the upper end of Ledge Road, from Lynnbrook Road and from a parking lot behind a car dealership on Route 1. Rocky, uneven footing is a good place to practice a slow walk on a loose leash and a wait at the top of a climb, and a poor place for a first recall test.
Reedy Meadow, which the town calls the largest freshwater cattail marsh in Massachusetts, is a National Natural Landmark. The Partridge Island trail reaches it from Main Street, across from Heritage Lane, over a boardwalk built in 1976. The town says the boardwalk needs repairs and is raising money for them, so check its condition before you set out. A narrow boardwalk tests whether your dog will walk calmly at your side and wait while another walker passes.
Chapter 320 opens every town conservation area to the public free of charge from dawn to dusk and bans hunting, trapping and firearms on all of them. It sets no separate dog rule, so the leash-or-control standard from Chapter 115 is the one that counts on these trails, along with the duty to pick up after your dog.
- 01
Leash up at the car and wait for eye contact before you set off
- 02
Walk the first stretch on a loose leash, paying your dog for staying close
- 03
Ask for a wait before each steep or rocky pitch, then go down together
- 04
At the top of the ledges, practice a settle while you take in the view
- 05
Turn back before your dog tires, and finish on an easy cue
Bylaw and license
Some Lynnfield places require a leash whatever your dog knows, and licenses are due by March 1
Voice control has limits in the bylaw. A leash, held firmly, is required in any school building or on school grounds, in any place of business and at any place of public assembly. Since a 2017 Town Meeting vote, no dog may set a paw on an artificial turf field or any other athletic playing surface in town. Anyone with a dog in a park, playground, street or other public area must pick up after it and carry the means to do so. Penalties are $25 for a first violation in a calendar year and $50 after that.
Licensing runs through the Town Clerk at Town Hall, 55 Summer Street. The code requires a license on or before March 1 for the January-to-December period, for every dog six months or older. The fee is $10 for a spayed or neutered dog and $15 otherwise, and owners over 70 pay nothing with proof of age. Apply online, in person or by mail, using the form that arrives with the annual town census each January, and include proof of an unexpired rabies vaccination.
- Leash always: school grounds, businesses, public gatherings
- No dogs on turf fields or athletic playing surfaces
- Carry a bag; penalties $25, then $50
- License by March 1: $10 or $15, free for owners over 70
After Gloucester
The coaching stays at Dogtown; the homework comes back to Lynnfield
Foundation ends with one go-home lesson and Advanced with two scheduled coaching lessons, all at our building on Eastern Ave, where you handle your own dog while our trainer fine-tunes your timing. Bring whoever walks the dog on weekdays as well as weekends. A recall cue said three different ways by three family members teaches a dog that the word is optional, and the lesson is the easiest place to agree on one version.
After that, three options stay open, all in Gloucester. Private sessions start from $94, and one a few weeks after the stay is a sensible check-in once you know which skill wobbles. Canine Campus, two, four or six weeks of day training with nights at home, includes pick-up and drop-off, but ask whether Lynnfield is on a route before planning around it. And Canine Citizen Academy prepares adolescents and adults for the AKC Canine Good Citizen test, a fair next goal for a dog whose manners are coming together.
- One go-home lesson after Foundation, two after Advanced
- Private sessions from $94
- Canine Campus: 2, 4 or 6 weeks, nights at home
- Canine Citizen Academy: preparation for the AKC CGC test
