Board and train for Middleton, MA dog owners

Middleton's walks are leash walks. The town treats a dog off its own property without a leash or chain under eight feet as at large, and the rail trail asks for a short leash among the bikes. This page sets out how a stay in Gloucester prepares a dog for that, how to get here, and what the town expects on licensing.

Why a stay

A stay suits a Middleton dog because the town's walks are short-leash walks among bikes and strollers

The Middleton Rail Trail asks walkers to keep pets on a short leash, and its cyclists may ride at up to 15 mph. A dog that lunges at wheels or freezes at a passing stroller makes that trail hard work for everyone on it. Neutrality, the habit of noticing a bike or another dog and carrying on, is one of the skills the two-week Advanced program trains, along with distraction proofing and real-world outings. Foundation, one week, builds the leash skills and impulse control underneath.

A stay concentrates that work. Instead of an hour a week with a trainer and six days of guesswork, your dog trains with our team every day for one or two weeks, and you read how it went in the daily update. Gabriella Pope, our Director of Training & Canine Behaviorist, sets the plan at the consult. The methods are fear- and force-free, based on positive reinforcement, and our board and train page has the full skill lists for both programs.

  • Advanced: neutrality around bikes, dogs and people
  • Foundation: leash skills and impulse control
  • Daily training, reported in a daily update
  • No published stay price: a quote follows the consult

The route

Route 62 east or Route 114 east, then Route 128 north: about 35 minutes

From the center of Middleton, Route 62 runs east through Danvers to Route 128, and Route 114 east is the other way onto the highway. Either way, follow Route 128 north through Beverly and Manchester-by-the-Sea until it ends in Gloucester, then take Eastern Avenue to number 210. By our estimate the drive is about 35 minutes outside rush hour, and the midday window from 12 to 1 PM on weekdays falls between the commutes.

A Middleton address is not on the Pup Van's route, which runs at $10 each way in Rockport, Gloucester, Essex and Manchester-by-the-Sea, so ask us about pick-up. The free evaluation is held only on weekday mornings between 6:30 and 9:30 AM, by appointment, so a commuter may need to plan around it. Our drop-off windows also include Saturdays from 8 to 10 AM; ask at booking which day suits the start of the stay.

Middleton practice spots

The rail trail tests manners around bikes; Barett Reservation is the quieter woods walk

The Middleton Rail Trail Alliance is turning 4.5 miles of the old Essex Railroad through town into a multi-use trail that will eventually link Danvers and North Andover. Its posted rules: open dawn to dusk, pets on a short leash with droppings removed, cyclists yield to pedestrians, keep right and pass on the left with an audible signal, and a 15 mph limit. That bell or call from behind is useful material for a dog fresh from a stay, because it can become the cue to step to your side for a reward.

Barett Reservation on North Liberty Street is Essex County Greenbelt land: 83 acres crossed by about half a mile of trail, with a little lot or room to park at the roadside. Greenbelt lists dog walking there and asks owners on all its land to carry a leash, leash an aggressive dog, keep noise down, never leave a dog unattended, stop digging and carry out the waste, between sunrise and sunset. Middleton's own leash rule applies on these trails too.

Town rules

Middleton counts a dog as at large off its property without a leash under eight feet

The town's Board of Health rules describe a dog at large as one that is off its owner's property and either without a person able to control it, without a leash or chain shorter than eight feet, or a danger to people or property. Animal Control can require owners to keep dogs from running at large, and dog-control fines climb from $25 to $50 to $100. The Rail Trail Alliance puts it plainly: the town and the trail require dogs on a leash at all times off the owner's property.

Licenses run from January 1 to December 31 through the Town Clerk at the Town Hall and Community Center, 105 South Main Street, in person, by mail or online, with a current rabies certificate and proof of spay or neuter. Late fees start once May 31 passes: $10 per dog after June 1, $15 after July 1 and $25 after August 1. The license fee itself is unsettled: the clerk's page and Chapter 107 of the town code give different amounts, so confirm it with the clerk before you pay.

The weeks after

Lessons at Dogtown, then rail-trail practice: how the skills settle in Middleton

Collection day includes a go-home lesson at our Gloucester building, where you take the leash and our trainer coaches you through each cue. Advanced comes with two scheduled coaching lessons, which gives you a chance to bring back questions from the first walks on the rail trail. Write them down as they come up. A note about which bike, which corner and how close makes the second lesson far more useful than a general sense that things went wrong.

If you want help beyond the lessons, private sessions start from $94. Canine Campus runs two, four or six weeks of training and adventure days with your dog home each night, and includes pick-up and drop-off; ask whether a Middleton address is covered. For a dog whose reaction to bikes or dogs runs deeper than manners, Focus & Flow, 6 weeks and 12 sessions, or React Less, Relax More, 8 weeks and 16 sessions, may suit better than a second stay.

  • Go-home lesson at collection; two coaching lessons with Advanced
  • Private sessions from $94
  • Canine Campus: pick-up and drop-off, if your address is covered
  • Focus & Flow or React Less, Relax More for deeper reactions

Asked and answered

Questions people ask about this

Short, complete answers you can act on today. More in the full FAQ.

Will board and train stop my dog chasing bikes on the Middleton Rail Trail?
It can make a real start, though no program can promise a result. Advanced, the two-week stay, trains neutrality and impulse control and proofs cues against distraction, which is the skill set a bike-chaser needs. A deep-rooted reaction may need a longer behavior program afterward, such as Focus & Flow or React Less, Relax More, and we tell you honestly at the consult which path fits.
How long may a Middleton dog's leash be?
Under the Board of Health rules, a dog off its owner's property without a leash or chain shorter than eight feet can count as at large, and fines run $25, then $50, then $100. The rail trail asks for a short leash on top of that. A standard six-foot leash satisfies both and leaves room for loose-leash walking.
Does my Middleton dog need a license before the stay?
Yes, and we check it at the free evaluation with the Rabies, DHPP and Bordetella records. Middleton licenses run for the calendar year, with late fees after May 31. Ask the Town Clerk for the current fee before you renew.
Does Dogtown collect dogs from Middleton?
Not on the Pup Van's set route, which covers Rockport, Gloucester, Essex and Manchester-by-the-Sea at $10 each way. Ask us about pick-up for your Middleton address when you send the training form. Driving yourself, take Route 62 or Route 114 east to Route 128 and follow it to its end, about 35 minutes outside rush hour, by our estimate.
Can we keep training at Dogtown after the stay?
Yes. Private sessions start from $94, Canine Campus offers two, four or six weeks of day training with nights at home, and Dogtown Academy days, $89 full or $69 half, include a session with our trainer. All of it happens at 210 Eastern Ave in Gloucester. The go-home lessons are the best moment to ask which one your dog needs next.
