Board and train for Ipswich, MA dog owners

Ipswich offers a trained dog a rare reward: a marked zone on Crane Beach where it may run off leash in the cooler months, as long as it answers your voice. On town-owned trails, the leash stays on. This page covers the half-hour drive, two places to practice, the Town Clerk's rules and the follow-up after the stay.

Why Gloucester

Why an Ipswich family drives half an hour for board and train: a few trips instead of many

From Ipswich, a board and train trades many short trips for a few longer ones. You drive to Gloucester for the assessment with Gabby, the free evaluation, the drop-off and the coaching at the end, rather than for a long run of weekly sessions. That matters at half an hour each way: Focus & Flow, for comparison, packs 12 sessions into 6 weeks, and React Less, Relax More runs 16 sessions over 8 weeks.

The method is the same whatever the format: fear- and force-free, built on positive reinforcement, and led by Gabriella Pope, who holds a B.S. in Biochemistry and has spent more than ten years working hands-on with behaviorally complex dogs. Foundation, one week, is for puppies, young dogs and foundational manners. Advanced, two weeks, is for adolescents who need real-world reliability, and it adds distraction proofing, outings and neutrality, which is exactly what the Crane Beach rules ask of a dog.

  • A handful of trips to Gloucester instead of a weekly drive
  • Foundation, 1 week; Advanced, 2 weeks with two coaching lessons
  • Daily updates while your dog is with us
  • Quoted after a short assessment; sessions from $94

Getting here

From Ipswich, Route 133 through Essex and Route 128 north take about 30 minutes

Budget about 30 minutes outside rush hour, by our estimate. From downtown Ipswich, follow Route 1A and Route 133 south along County Road, then turn left onto Route 133, Essex Road. Through Essex it becomes John Wise Avenue, Main Street and then Eastern Avenue; across the Gloucester line it is Essex Avenue. Join Route 128 north, ride it to its end, and turn toward Rockport on Eastern Avenue in Gloucester; number 210 is about a mile along.

Ipswich is outside the Pup Van towns; ask us about pick-up, and the front desk will say what the route allows for your street. The $10 each-way fare is set for Rockport, Gloucester, Essex and Manchester-by-the-Sea only. Whatever happens on day one, plan to drive the last day yourself: the coaching that ends the stay happens at Dogtown, and the half hour home is a good time to talk through what you saw.

  • Route 1A and 133 south, then Route 133 east through Essex
  • Route 128 north to its end, then Eastern Avenue to 210
  • About 30 minutes outside rush hour, by our estimate
  • Outside the Pup Van towns; ask us about pick-up

Practice spots

Practice at Crane Beach from October 1 to March 31 and on the Turkey Hill loop, leashed

Crane Beach belongs to The Trustees, who allow dogs there from October 1 to March 31, free for member dogs and $5 for each nonmember dog. Their winter rules set the terms: dogs stay in sight and below the high tide line except to get on and off the beach, never go on the dunes, the trails or Castle Hill, and come two to a person at most, each on its own leash. Inside the marked No Leash Zone a dog must be close enough to obey a voice command and must not approach other visitors unless invited.

Read those rules as a test of the Advanced program. Not approaching people unless invited is neutrality; staying close enough to obey your voice is recall under distraction. Outside the zone, including the parking area and the boardwalks, the leash must be six feet or shorter, so long-line practice belongs inside the zone itself, before you ever unclip. The Trustees may require leashes everywhere if conditions warrant, so read the rules at the gate each visit.

Turkey Hill Conservation Area, town land at 31 Pineswamp Road, is a one-mile wooded loop up to one of the highest undeveloped hilltops in Ipswich, steep for the first quarter mile, with a four-car lot. The town welcomes dogs on its trails but requires a leash at all times and asks you to pick up the waste. The climb is ideal for loose-leash work: slack earns the next step up the hill, and a tight leash means you both stand still.

Town rules

Ipswich licenses dogs for the calendar year, due by March 31, at the Town Clerk, 25 Green Street

Ipswich registers dogs six months and older for the calendar year, January 1 to December 31, through the Town Clerk at Town Hall, 25 Green Street. Renewals belong between January 1 and March 31. At the time of writing the fee is $15 for a spayed or neutered dog and $20 for an intact one, owners aged 70 or older get a discount on the first dog, and the town bylaw adds $10 for each month or part of a month a license is issued after March 31.

The clerk wants a valid rabies certificate and proof of spay or neuter, and registers dogs online, by mail or in person; call 978-356-6677 with questions. In October 2026 the clerk's page posted special office hours around the state election, so check it before you go. On town-owned trails, Ipswich requires a leash at all times. Bring the Ipswich license with the Rabies, DHPP and Bordetella records to our free evaluation on a weekday morning.

After the stay

After the stay: coaching at Dogtown, then a steady build-up to the No Leash Zone

Coaching at Dogtown closes the stay: one go-home lesson after Foundation, two scheduled coaching lessons with Advanced. The trainer runs each skill first, then hands you the leash and adjusts your timing, position and rewards until your dog answers you. Bring the person who will walk the dog at Crane, and arrive with your questions written down, because Ipswich is half an hour away and it is easier to ask on the day.

If a skill stalls, private sessions start from $94. Canine Campus offers more weeks of day training while your dog sleeps at home, with pick-up and drop-off, daily reports and homework, in blocks of 2, 4 or 6 weeks; ask us whether Campus pick-up reaches Ipswich. For a dog that loves company, a Dogtown Academy day at $89, or $69 for a half, folds a training session with our trainer into a day of play.

Asked and answered

Questions people ask about this

Short, complete answers you can act on today. More in the full FAQ.

Is half an hour too far for board and train from Ipswich?
Not for this format. A board and train concentrates the work into one or two weeks, so the drive happens a handful of times: the assessment, the evaluation, drop-off and the coaching at the end. Weekly programs mean more trips. The route is Route 133 through Essex and Route 128 north, about 30 minutes outside rush hour, by our estimate.
Does Dogtown pick up dogs in Ipswich?
Not on the van's set route: Ipswich is outside the Pup Van towns, so ask us about pick-up before you plan the week around it. The $10 each-way fare applies only in Rockport, Gloucester, Essex and Manchester-by-the-Sea. Put your street on the training form and the front desk will tell you what is possible. Plan to come for the final day yourself, since the coaching that ends the stay happens at Dogtown.
Can my dog go off leash at Crane Beach after board and train?
Only inside the marked No Leash Zone, only from October 1 to March 31, and only if your dog stays in sight, below the high tide line and close enough to obey a voice command. Outside the zone the leash is six feet or less. Training builds the recall; your dog earns the zone on a long line first.
What do I need from the Ipswich Town Clerk before the stay?
A current Ipswich license. Registrations run January to December and are due by March 31, at $15 for a spayed or neutered dog and $20 for an intact one, with $10 added for each month late. The clerk needs a valid rabies certificate and proof of spay or neuter. Bring the license to our free evaluation with the vaccine records.
Are Ipswich town trails off leash?
No. The town welcomes dogs on its trails but requires them to be leashed at all times and asks owners to pick up the waste. Turkey Hill Conservation Area at 31 Pineswamp Road is a good loose-leash walk after the stay, with a steep first quarter mile and a four-car lot at the trailhead.
