Board and train for Peabody, MA dog owners
In Peabody the leash may be no longer than six feet, and the Independence Greenway is the one park area the city's ordinance opens to dogs. That makes calm walking on a short leash the skill that matters most, and it is the first thing a Dogtown stay works on.
- Getting to Eastern Ave
- Route 128 north, past the I-95 split, to its end in Gloucester, then Eastern Avenue: about 35 minutes outside rush hour, by our estimate
- The Pup Van
- No. Peabody is outside the Pup Van towns; ask us about pick-up
- Dog licensing
- City Clerk's Office, City Hall, 24 Lowell Street: $15 spayed or neutered, $25 otherwise; proof of rabies vaccination, not the tag alone (peabody-ma.gov)
- The beach rule
- No dogs in city parks, playgrounds or recreation areas except the Independence Greenway; a leash of six feet or less off your premises (Peabody Code 21-1, 6-11)
- A trail we know
- Peabody Independence Greenway: Lahey Clinic to Peabody Road, and Ross Park to the Middleton line; Peabody Dog Park, 0 Perkins Street, listed as open

Why a stay
Peabody's six-foot leash rule makes loose-leash walking the first skill to build, and a stay builds it every day
With most city parks closed to dogs, a Peabody dog does much of its exercise on a leash along streets and the Greenway, so pulling, lunging and zigzagging show up on every walk. Foundation, the one-week program, works on basic obedience and leash skills, place, stay and recall, impulse control, and crate and household manners. Advanced, two weeks, adds distraction proofing, real-world outings, neutrality and structured socialization, for adolescents who know the basics indoors but lose them outside.
During the stay your dog lives at Dogtown, trains daily with our team under Gabriella Pope, and joins a playgroup matched by size and temperament when it is ready, which gives it off-leash time the city's parks do not. Our methods are fear- and force-free and built on positive reinforcement, so leash skills come from rewards and clear communication, never from a prong, choke or shock collar. A daily update in the Dogtown app tells you which skills were worked on and how your dog responded.
- Leash skills and loose-leash walking from the first day
- Distraction proofing and neutrality in the two-week Advanced
- Playgroup time, matched by size and temperament, once ready
- No prong, choke or shock collars at any stage
The drive
Stay on Route 128 where I-95 splits off, and Peabody is about 35 minutes from our door
Get onto Route 128 north in Peabody and stay with it where I-95 splits off toward New Hampshire. The road carries on through Beverly and Manchester-by-the-Sea into Gloucester and ends a short way from our building; follow Eastern Avenue to number 210. Count on about 35 minutes outside rush hour, by our estimate. The afternoon drive home is the slow one, so a weekday morning drop-off, between 6:30 and 9:30, usually goes more smoothly.
Peabody is outside the Pup Van towns; ask us about pick-up. The van's $10 each-way price is set for Rockport, Gloucester, Essex and Manchester-by-the-Sea. Saturday windows, 8 to 10 AM, 12 to 1 PM and 4 to 6 PM, help a family that works weekdays, and on Sundays the building opens for overnight guests only, from 8 to 10 AM and 4 to 6 PM. Ask when you book which of those windows suit drop-off and pick-up for a training stay.
Practice in Peabody
The Independence Greenway is the one city park area open to dogs, and the Perkins Street dog park is listed as open
Peabody's park ordinance bars dogs from public parks, playgrounds and recreation areas, with one written exception: the Peabody Independence Greenway. The city's recreation department lists the Greenway in two parts, Lahey Clinic to Peabody Road and Ross Park to the Middleton line. Sections of the Greenway close for repairs from time to time, so look at the city's facility page before a long walk. The six-foot leash rule applies on the path.
The Peabody Dog Park at 0 Perkins Street is listed by Recreation, Parks and Forestry as open, but the department posts no rules for it online, so contact its office at 50 Farm Avenue before the first visit. Brooksby Farm states plainly that no pets are allowed on the farm. A long line longer than six feet does not meet the city's leash rule off your own premises, so keep long-line recall work to your yard, and use the Greenway for the short-leash skills in the plan below.
- 01
Practice the leash cues in your hallway and driveway first
- 02
Choose a Greenway segment the city's facility page shows as open
- 03
Walk at a quiet hour, on a leash of six feet or less
- 04
Reward a slack leash every few steps, then every few yards
- 05
Ask for a sit as walkers and cyclists pass
- 06
Stop while it is going well, and pick up after your dog
Peabody rules
A leash of six feet or less, licenses at $15 or $25, and the rabies certificate rather than the tag
Section 6-11 of the Peabody code forbids a dog to be at large off its owner's or keeper's premises unless it is held on a leash no longer than six feet. A first violation within a year costs $50, and later ones $100. Section 6-25 requires you to pick up after your dog on any sidewalk, street, park, public area or someone else's property. City parks keep posted hours of 8 AM to 9 PM from April 1 to October 1, and 8 AM to 7 PM from October 1 to March 31.
The City Clerk's Office at City Hall, 24 Lowell Street, licenses dogs six months and older, at $15 for a spayed or neutered dog and $25 otherwise. The clerk wants proof of a current rabies vaccination, noting that the tag alone is not sufficient, plus proof of spay or neuter. Apply in person, by mail or through the city's online payment center. The clerk's page says a 2025 license was good until March 31, 2026, and the code allows a late fee for a dog not licensed by June 1. Bring the license to the Dogtown evaluation.
- A leash of six feet or less off your own premises
- No dogs in city parks except the Independence Greenway
- License: $15 spayed or neutered, $25 otherwise
- Proof of rabies vaccination; the tag alone is not enough
After the stay
Bring your Greenway leash to the go-home lesson, because the coaching is built around it
Foundation ends with one go-home lesson and Advanced includes two scheduled coaching lessons, all held at Dogtown. Bring the leash you will actually use on the Greenway, since a six-foot leash handles differently from a longer one, and bring everyone who walks the dog. The trainer runs each skill first, then hands you the leash and coaches your timing and rewards until the cue works for you as well as it does for us.
Once home, follow the order of places from the lesson: inside first, then your street, then the Greenway. If the leash starts to tighten again after a few weeks, message the front desk in the Dogtown app; private sessions start from $94. Canine Campus, two, four or six weeks of day training with your dog home every night, suits a dog that needs more real-world repetitions. It includes pick-up and drop-off, so ask whether your Peabody address is covered.
