Board and train near Boston: up Route 128 to Gloucester
A Boston family choosing a program an hour away is really choosing three drives: the evaluation, the drop-off and the go-home lesson. This page plans those trips, explains the commuter rail option for a dog who rides well, and sets a facility stay on Cape Ann beside the in-home programs closer to the city.
The drive
Route 128 does most of the work: about an hour from downtown Boston, outside rush hour
From the city, head north on I-93 or Route 1 until you reach Route 128. Stay with 128 where I-95 splits off toward New Hampshire in Peabody, then follow it east through Danvers, Beverly, Wenham and Manchester-by-the-Sea into Gloucester. Route 128 ends near the water in Gloucester, just past its junction with Route 127 at Eastern Avenue, and our building at 210 Eastern Ave is a short run from that junction. By our estimate the trip from downtown takes about 60 minutes outside rush hour.
Time the drive to our windows, not the other way round. Drop-off and pick-up run on weekdays from 6:30 to 9:30 AM, 12 to 1 PM and 4 to 6:30 PM, and on Saturdays from 8 to 10 AM, 12 to 1 PM and 4 to 6 PM. The noon window falls between the two commutes, which is why we suggest it to families driving up from the city. Ask the front desk about parking and where to bring your dog in when you book the drop-off.
- I-93 or Route 1 north, then Route 128 to its end in Gloucester
- About 60 minutes from downtown outside rush hour, by our estimate
- Weekday windows 6:30 to 9:30 AM, 12 to 1 PM and 4 to 6:30 PM
- Boston is outside the Pup Van towns; ask us about pick-up
Three trips
Plan three trips up Route 128: the evaluation, the drop-off and the go-home lesson
Every stay starts with the training form, and the training team replies within one hour on business days. A short assessment with Gabby picks Foundation or Advanced. Because your dog sleeps here, the free evaluation applies as well: a temperament test and a few supervised hours in a group, held on weekdays between 6:30 and 9:30 AM by appointment. Bring Rabies, DHPP and Bordetella records and a current dog license from your own city or town.
The evaluation takes a morning rather than a quick stop, so ask the front desk when to collect your dog and plan the day around it. When you book it, tell us the start date you have in mind for the stay, and we will look at the calendar with you so the two trips sit sensibly together rather than a few days apart by accident.
The last trip matters most. Foundation ends with one go-home lesson and Advanced with two scheduled coaching lessons, held at Dogtown with you handling your own dog. Choose a slot you can stay for, because a rushed handover at the end of a workday loses half its value. For Advanced, settle both lesson dates before the stay begins, so the second drive north is planned rather than squeezed in.

By train
The Rockport line works for a calm, leashed dog outside peak hours
If you do not drive, the Rockport branch of the commuter rail runs from North Station to Gloucester. The MBTA's rider rules let larger dogs that do not fit in a carrier ride only off-peak and on a leash, and keep them off at weekday peak hours. Small dogs in a secure carrier may ride at any time. Staff can restrict a pet because of crowds or the animal's behavior, and the rules ask riders to avoid bringing pets on holidays and during large events.
From Gloucester station you still need a ride to Eastern Ave, so arrange that before you set off. Boston sits outside the Pup Van towns, which are Rockport, Gloucester, Essex and Manchester-by-the-Sea at $10 each way; ask us about pick-up from anywhere else. The train is also a fair exam after an Advanced stay. A dog who can wait on a platform and ride quietly is showing exactly the neutrality that the second week works on.
- Larger dogs: off-peak only, on a leash and off the seats
- No larger dogs at weekday peak hours, per the rider rules
- Small dogs in a secure carrier may ride at any time
- Staff may restrict a pet for crowds or behavior
Facility or home
A facility stay differs from in-home programs near Boston in where your dog sleeps and who it meets
Some programs near the city board dogs in a trainer's own house. That can suit a dog who copes badly with noise and other dogs, and it puts the training inside a real household. The AKC's advice for any board and train is to find out where your dog will live, in a trainer's home or in a kennel, and to get the methods and the equipment in writing. Ask the same questions of us before you book.
At Dogtown your dog sleeps in an overnight suite with 24/7 monitoring, in a 10,000 square foot facility with indoor play floors, an outdoor turf yard and a grooming studio. Daycare integration is part of both programs when a dog is ready, in playgroups of 7 to 10 matched by size and temperament, so a settle or a recall is learned around real dogs. A bath before pick-up can be booked on site.
Massachusetts is also writing new rules for kennels. Ollie's Law was signed on September 20, 2024 and took effect on December 19, 2024. MDAR's regulations for commercial boarding and training kennels were due in 2026, and as of the March 18, 2026 advisory committee minutes they had not been released. Whichever program you choose, ask how it is preparing for them.
- Where does my dog sleep, and who checks on it at night?
- Which methods and equipment, written down?
- How many lessons do I get, and where?
- How will I hear about the training each day?
Back in the city
Back in Boston, the skills hold through practice in the order you were shown
Training travels home with you, so city sidewalks, elevators and stairwells are where it has to hold, not our turf yard. Use the order from the go-home lesson: the quiet room first, then your hallway or your street, then a busier block. A dog who held a stay beside the playgroup needs the same patience on a crowded corner, and the first week is about easy wins rather than tests.
If you want more coaching, private sessions start from $94 and are booked through the same training form. Canine Campus, the hybrid day-training program, includes pick-up and drop-off but is built around dogs who come in by day, so ask whether your address works before counting on it. Families who are often on Cape Ann can add Dogtown Academy days, $89 for a full day or $69 for a half, to keep the cues sharp. Our board and train page sets out both programs in full.
