How much does it cost to groom a matted dog?
Matting is the most common reason a grooming bill comes in higher than the menu price, and the most common reason owners feel caught out. This page lays out how the charge is built, what the groomer is deciding at check-in, and how Cape Ann life makes mats worse.
The short version
Base price by size, then $15 for every 20 minutes of de-matting
Two numbers make up the bill. The first is the full-service price for the weight band: $75 up to 25 pounds, $85 for 26 to 50, $110 for 51 to 90 and $120 over 90. The second is time. De-matting is $15 per 20 minutes because it is slow, careful work with a comb, a dematting tool and a dryer, and we would rather charge for the minutes than pad every dog's base price.
The third figure that sometimes appears is the $20 behavior or handling surcharge. Mats hurt when they are worked, and a dog who has been pulled at before may need breaks, a second pair of hands or a slower pace. That is what the surcharge covers. All of it is set out at check-in, when the groomer has the coat in hand, and confirmed before any work begins.

How it works at Dogtown

You book online through MoeGo or in the Dogtown app; there is no evaluation for grooming. At check-in the groomer works through the coat with fingers and a comb, finding where the mats sit and how close to the skin they are. Ears, armpits, collar line, belly and tail base are the usual places on the doodles we see; the pants and ruff on Bernese and Aussies.
Then you get a choice explained plainly. A few loose mats can be worked out, and the price is the base plus one or two de-matting blocks. A pelted coat, where the mats have joined into a felt against the skin, is shaved beneath the matting and grown back: faster, far kinder and usually cheaper than hours of pulling. Nothing starts until you agree the plan.

The math
Worked examples for the dogs we see most on Cape Ann
The table shows how a bill builds. A medium goldendoodle at 40 pounds starts at $85 for full service; if the mats behind the ears and under the harness take two 20-minute blocks, that is two de-matting charges on top. A Bernese with a pelted rear end is a bath-only groom plus blocks for the pants, because a double coat is never shaved all over. Nails ($16) are separate.
Two things bring the total down. First, honesty in the booking notes: a groomer who knows the coat is matted schedules the time and does not have to squeeze. Second, the rebooking discount of $5 at pick-up and a shorter interval, because a doodle groomed every six weeks rarely needs a de-matting block at all. Membership and overnight bundles take 15 or 10 percent off grooming too.

What it means for your dog
A puppy coat mats overnight, a senior coat mats where it cannot reach
Doodle puppies change coat between about eight and twelve months, and the soft puppy hair tangles into the incoming adult coat almost overnight. Owners who brushed weekly find pelts they cannot explain. Book the groom before the change, not after, and ask the groomer to show you line brushing to the skin. That habit is worth more than any single de-matting charge.
Adult dogs mat where friction lives: under a harness, behind the ears, where a wet coat dries slowly after a swim. Seniors mat where they can no longer groom themselves, along the back and hips, and their skin is thinner, so the groomer works slower and shaves sooner rather than pulling. For any age, a mat close to the skin is a shave, because the alternative hurts.

Cape Ann makes mats
Salt water, sand, burrs and wet woods all tighten a coat
Gloucester's beaches take dogs from October 1 through April 30, Good Harbor on even days and Wingaersheek on odd, and a doodle that swims in salt water and is left to dry in the car mats within a day. Rinse and fully dry the coat after every beach visit. Rockport's beaches reopen to dogs after September 15, and the same rule holds there.
Inland is no better. Dogtown Common's 3,600 acres of boulders and woods, and Ravenswood Park in West Gloucester, hand out burrs, mud and, from April to November, ticks, which a matted coat hides. A short practical clip through summer and a longer coat kept combed through winter is how most of our doodle owners keep de-matting off the bill.
